Miss Sophy Dallas Irwin, who returned from
Europe a short time ago, Is at present visiting
at Bar Harbor. Miss Irwin will return to her
home, at 2027 De Lancey Place, tho early part
of the week.
It has been learned today that JtWO was raised
at the ball which was tlvcn at tho close of the
Bar Harbor season for the benefit of the Red
Cross Society.
A number of prominent society matrons from
various cities were Interested in tho affair.
Those of this city who helped greatly to make
the ball a success were Mrs. Edgar T. Scott,
Mrs. Henry Cadwalader Chapman, Mrs. John

Mrs. Fielding Otis Lewis and her little
daughter, of 261 South Seventeenth street, will
leave early next week to spend a short time
in Louisville, Ky.
Mrs. Edward Buckley has gone to Baltimore
for a short visit, where she Is the guest of her
sister, Mrs. Howard.
Mr. and Mrs. C. Howard Clarke, Jr., who spent
the summer at Manchester, have returned and
are at their country place at Devon for the
early autumn.
Miss Eleanor Nalle, of Baltimore, a cousin of

NEWPORT. R. I.. Oct. 5.-Ten out of 11 mem
bers of the Outer Fountain Fishing Club sailed
away today In the catboat Carrie, formerly the
tlagshlp of the Newport Kat Bote Klub, under
the pilotage of Captain Tom Shea, to begin the
yearly series In competition fishing for the pos
session of the cup presented by the late A. Lan
fear Norrle. The cup had been held for two
years by William R. Hunter and Bradford Nor
man and one year by Lewis Q. Jones.
Mr. and Mrs. William DeForest Mnnlce re
turned to New York, after spending the season
with Mr. and Mra. E. Hayward Ferry.
Mr. and Mrs. M. M. VanBureu gav. a dinner
at Sunny Fields Farm tonight.

take place this afternoon, at Ileatherfleld, Bryn
Mawr, when Miss Ada Lambert Wetherill.

Mr. Morton for Miss Billle BurkW "A Rich
Man's Son," In which W. H. Crane, the come
uian, starred successfully, and "Colonel New
come," a dramatization from Thackeray's novel,
"The Newcomes," which was written originally
for Sul Smith Russell, but In which that come
dian was not seen, owing to the fact that his
health broke down nt that time. The manu
script was found In the possession of Sol Smith
Russell at the time of his death and was after
ward used by Willard, the English aotor, for a
season. It has never been eeen In New York,
and It is possible that Sir Herbert Beerbohm
Tree will revise the play shortly for production
In America, appearing himself In the role of
Colonel Newcome. Michael Morton is a brother
of Mrs. Martha Morton Cronhelm, who Is well
known as nn American playwright.
Stanley Dark, who will play Lord Darling
ton, has been the leading man with Margaret
Anglln in several productions, notably In "Tho
Awakening of Helena Ritchie," "Green Stock
ings" and in one or two special New York
revivals In which Miss Anglln was the stellar
player.
Charles Conway, an English entertainer, has
arrived In New York and will moke his first
appearance before an American audience. Mr.
Conway, who has been beforo tho British
public for the last 17 years, proposes to make
his American debut in a scries of Dickenslan
Impersonations.
Letters received from England confirm the
fact that Robert Lorraine, the actor, has al
ready distinguished himself as a member of the
English military flying corps. Mr. Lorraine
was one of the first Englishmen to go In for
aviation, and four or five years ago he made
several sensational tllghts. AVhen ho became
engaged to Miss Marie Lohr, however, that
young actress Insisted that he should soar no
more; hut oa their engagement wns subse
quently broken off, and Miss Lohr became the
wife of some one else, Mr. Lorraine evidently
considered hlmeelf Justified in returning to his
earlier love, the aeroplane.
Frederick William Wile tells the following
story of Richard Strauss. It waH at a general
rehearsal at Dresden of "Elektrn," and Doctor
Strauss rushed down the aisle, and arrlvinsr at
the footlights suddenly commanded a halt In
the performance. "Madame Schumarm-Helnk,
the Clytemnestra. was In the throes of a tu
multuous vocal episode. "Leader, leader," ex
claimed Strauss, "I can still hear the singer!"
After spending the summer in San Francisco,
David Warfield returned to New York recently
to begin rehearsals for his second scaaon In
"The Auctioneer." It had been David Belasco's
Intention to present Mr. Warfield In a new
play this year, but because of tho naatlonal
nature of the receipts that marked his appear-
