The only part we dissent from is when the plaster is applied di rectly to the clay, in which we think there is sonic danger. But if it be brick clay, whose solidity is next.to stone, it i will doubtless answer, provided there is no defect, that is gravelly or sandy spots. " One of the most important append ages to the barn or stable, is a well-built capacious cistern. Having a full sup ply of pure water into the barn-yard is not only a great convenience, saving much time in taking horses to the pond or brook to drink, but the water from a well-kept cistern is much more health ful to stock than water from many of the "stock-ponds," which, during the summer months, when water is most needed, are little better than mud holes. The water that fallsupon an ordinary sized barn, in the course of a year is sufficient for all the stock that will pro bably find shelter in and around the barn;' in the winter time, when the ponds are frozen, having water in the barn-yard is a great convenience, not only for watering stock, but for wetting the cut straw and hay that should be fed with meal to the farm horses and cattle. Many farmers who have experienced he advantage of a barn cistern, would avail themselves if they knew with how little cost and trouble they can be built. In ordinary clay soils, a cistern may be built without brick—except for the arch—by merely making the exca vation of the size and depth required, laying the mortar immediately on to the clay sides; if well done with good hy draulic cement, and clean coarse sand, it will be as permanent SA if plastered npon a brick wall. Brick will be required fur the arch.— To turn this about eighteen inches be low the surface of the ground, a shoul der should be made the width of the brick, on which the arch is to rest. One thousand brick will be sufficient for a cistern of the capacity of one hundred barrels, constructed on this plan, and the whole may be built at a cost of $5O. On many farms brick may be already on hand, and some farmers perhaps would prefer to wall the entire cistern from the bottom. To do this two-thirds or perhaps three-quarters more brick would be required. The roost proper form, and which gives the greatest strength to a cistern, is that of an ordinary jug—say ten or twelve feet deep, and six or eight feet in diameter at the bottom, increasing in the middle to nine or ten feet., and from the middle upward,: the size should be contracted to the base of the arch to six feet, or less. Such a cistern will hold from one hundred to one hundred and fifty barrels, and would allbril a supply of water for twenty head of animals con tinually. It is important to secure as freshly bond tqlnent as possible. The coarsest sand makes the strongest mor tar. This should be clean, that is free from any clayey or manly substance. TUE CODE IN VIRGINIA Old DOltlinion Chivalry' on the Decline --An Insult Revenged and a Challenge Declined. RIOHMOND, Oct. 11, 1870.—Quite an citemont was occasioned here to-day over a probable ajjaire d'honneur likely to grow out of a personal difficulty between Major James W. Walker, member of the house of Delegates, and James Barbour, editor of the Enquirer, of this city. It appears from the statements of the friends of both parties that Walker took offence at an article pub lished in the Enquirer in July, and meeting Barbour on the train Saturday last demand ed if it was meant to be personal. Barbour declined giving any explanation whereupon Walker, who is a powerful man, struck Mm. Barbour, a very weak man, respond ed by kicking at Walker's face, in which he spat, at the same time placing his hand on his pocket as if to draw a pistol. Walk er then seized Barbour, but at this junc ture they were separated by friends. Bar bour was On his way to see a child of his reported dying, and who has since died, and Walker, soon after arriving at his des tination, got off the train. Thus the matter ' remained until yesterday, when Barbour arrived hero in company with his friend, Col. John S. THE LANCASTER WEEKLY INTELLIGENCER, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 19, 1870 The Wing of Italy and the Pope—Victor Emmanuel's Letter to Plo Nono. The Italian journals publish the follow ing letter addressed by King Victor Em manuel to the Popo: Holy Father: With the affection of a son, with the faith of a Catholic, with the loyal ty of a king, with the sentiment of an Ital ian, I address myself again, as I have done formerly,to the heart of your Holiness. A storm full of perils threatens Europe. Favored by the war which is desolating the centre of the continent, the party of the cosmopolitan revolution increases in cour age and audacity, and is preparing to strike, especially in Italy and the provinces gov erned by your holiness, the, last blows at monarchy and the papacy. I know, Holy Father, that the greatness of your soul would not fall below the gravity of events; but for me, a Catholic Ring and an Italian King, and as such guardian and surety by the dispensation of Divine Providence anti by the will of the nation of the destinies of all Italians, I feel the duty of taking, in face of Europe and of the Catholic world, the responsibitity of maintaining order in the Peninsula and the • security of the Holy See. Now, Holy Father, the stair, of feeling of the population governed by your I 11AilleS8, aunt the presence among them of foreign troops coming from different places with different intentions, are a source of agita tion and of perils evident to all. Chance or the effervesence of passions may lead to violence and to alt effusion of blood, wide!, it is my duty and yoeirs, I Father, to avoid and prevent. I see the inevitable neem.sitv, for the, se curity of Italy and the Hole See, that my troops already ; guarding, the frontiers should advanee and occupy the positions which are indispensable to the security of your Holiness and to the maintenance of order. Your Holiness will not see a hostile aid in this measure of precaution. MEM MEE Capture ors Noted Horse Thief—fleetr ery of Horses, Carriages and Harness. Wm. Muthart, a notorious horse thief, has again come to grief, having been cap• tured on the Ist inst., by Harry Stauffer, special coal detective, of Mahanoy City.— Muthart, atlhe time of his arrest, was sit ting on the porch of a hotel in Barnesville, about one mile from the above place. Stauf fer approached him, and asked his name. Ho said it was Miller, and that ho was a horse dealer, having some stock with hint. The officer replied at once, "No sir ; your name is Muthart, and lam after you."' So pulling out a pair of hand-cuffs and a paci fier in the shape of a revolver, Stauffer had no trouble in loading his prisoner up and finally lodging him in jail at Pottsville. After his capture Muthart made a writ ten confession, covering several sheets of cap paper, in which he gives a detailed ac count of his operations. It was through this confession that officer Stauffer was en abled to aid in the recovering of valuable property stolen by Muthart front Mont gomery county, of which we are able at this writing to give the following brief par ticulars: July 6th he took front Jamb Iteary, nt Pottstown, a black horse, and on the same night a carriage fr on t Jacob Laver, of Puttsgrove. August 16th, he stole from George S. Patterson, of Bridgeport, a horse and liar • miss, and of IlenrY Beiger a carriage. lie alsO took what time we know not, a horse and carriage front W. \V. Strong, Si Athensville. When arrested he hail this property in his possession. Ile also took quite recently a horse and harness front Mr. Gallagher and a carriage front Mr. Downing, both of Iladdington. James Brass. tavern-keeper on the Alun ey road, two miles front that place, had pen session of the Pottstown wagon, Keiger's wagon and Patterson's torso and harness. Brass said he had traded for them, but he is well known, and the manner of his get ting possession oldie property is not doubt ed by the officers. Ile threatened violence to detective Stauffer, and refused to allow the property to be taken away, but that officer was used to dealing with such char acters and very soon produced the means by which he enforced his command. Brass gave tin the property to Mr. ra.U.Or:loll, who accompanied the officer, and fur whose father Brass said he once worked.
