Ml==a= IlattOurs. The Key of Death. Abotit the year 1060 one of those dan gerous • men, tin whom extraordinary talent is only the fearful source of crime andwickedness, beyond thutof ordinary Men, came to establish himself as a mer chant or trader at Venice. The stranger, Whose name was Tebaldo, became en amored of-the daughter •of an ancient house, already affianced to another. He demanded her hand in marriage and Was refused. Enraged at he studied how to be avenged. probably skilled in mechanical arts, he allowed himself no rest until he had' invented the most formidable weapon which could be im agined. This was a key of large size, the handle of which was so constructed that it could be turned round with little difficulty. When turned it discovered a:spring, which, on pressure, launched from the other end a needle or lancet, of such subtle fineness that it entered into the flesh and buried itself there without leaving any external trace. Tebaldo waited in disguise at the door of the church in which the maiden whom he loved was about to receive the nuptial benediction. The assassin sent the slender steel, unperceived, into the breast of the bridegroom. The wounded man had no suspicion of injury, but, I seized with a sudden and sharp pain in the midst of the ceremony, he fainted and was carried to his house amid the lamentations of the bridal party. Vain was all the skill of the physicians, who could not divine the cause of this strange illness, and died in a few days. Tebaldo again demanded the hand of the maiden from her parents and received a second refusal. They, too, perished miserably in a fewas. The alarm which these deaths, which appeared almost miracu lous, occasioned, excited the utmost vigilance of the magistrates . ; and when, on close examination of the bodies, the small instrument was found in the gan grened flesh, terror was universal; every one feared for his own life. The maiden thus cruelly orphaned had passed the first month of her mourning in a convent, when Tobaldo, hoping to bend her to his will, entreated to speak with her at the gate. Her reply was most decisive in the negative. Tebaldo, beyond himself with rage, attempted to wound her through the gate, and succeeded ; the obscurity of tne place prevented his movements from being observed. On her return to her room the maiden felt a pain in her breast, and uncovering it she found it spotted with blood. The pain increased; the surgeons who hastened to her assistance, taught by the past, waisted no time in conjecture, but cutting deep into the wounded part, extracted the needle be fore any mortal mischief had com menced, and saved the life of the lady. The State Inquisition used every means to discover the hand which had dealt these insidious and irresistible blows', The visit of Tebaldo to the convent caused suspicion to fall heavily upon him; his house was carefully searched, the infamous invention discovered, and he perished on the gibbet. To talnly prove that purchase such trash to stop Pain and mation is ridiculous. Fire will not stop heat; FIRST MORTGAGE BONDS a dumb brute shuns the heat, and knows enough to wade in a pond of water, when wounded, to reduce, cool, and cure liaffamma tion and Fever. Pimps and gamblers try to look honest, but folks can read the face too plainly. Some try to persuade the ignorant that pills, physic, Ac., cleanse the blood, purge the system, and do a hundred other things equally absurd.— Every body knows that it is false, and that no medicine can purify or increase a drop of blood. Food makes blood, bone and muscle, and is the Staff of Life. Every dose of medi cine swallowed is rejected, and hurried out of the system as quick aspossible. It is an ene my; yea, a deadly foe. Constipation, 11l health, and weakness, are the result of dosing, dosing, dosing the stomach. The living sys tem has enough to do without working herself to death in expelling and kicking out the per nicious nostrums poured down the throat.— Food she welcomes when she needs it; yea, asks for it. Let pill-makers and physic yen. ders stop eating food, and see how long they can subsist on their blood-purifying, invigora ting, health-giving medicines and cordials.— What humbug is more transparent? A dog would feel so insulted, If offered a dose, he would curl his tall downward In scorn, and run away In utter disgust. All physical pain arises from inflammation. Put out the fire and you stop pain absolutely. You can stop pain as easy as you can quench fire with water. WOLCOTT'S PAIN PAINT subdues inflaxn mation, heat, and fever one hundred times faster than Ice. Thousands have had a prac tical test of its merits at the very moment of most extreme pain, and they can testify that It has not failed In doing its work. It is sim ple; it is harmless; it has no stain; It gives no smart; It is for sale by Druggists everywhere•, and it is tested free of cost at 170 CHATHAM SQUARE, N. Y., and tel. But all attempts at cure proved utterly abortive until I tried Dr. Wolcott's Pain Paint, which the doctors told me was a humbug. But humbug or not, it has done the work completely in less than one month, removing the pain at the first applica tion. I kept her leg wet with Pain Paint con stantly until healed. Penna my 18 tfda:w union g,aritit itaiiroad 750 n I•L ES UNION PACIFIC RAILROAD Are now finished and in operation. Although this road is built with gt eat rapidity, the work is thoroughly done, and is pronounced by the United States Commissioners to be first-class In every respect, before it is accepted, and be• fore any bonds can be issued upon it. Rapidity and excellence of construction hav been secured by a complete division of labor and by dlstilbuting the twenty thousand men employed along the line for long distances at once. It is now probable that the WHOLE LINE TO THE PACIFPI WILL BE COMPLETED IN 1669 The Company have ample means of which the Government grants the right of way, and all necessary timber and other materials found along theline of its operations; also 12,800 acres of land to the mile, taken in alternate sections on each side of its road; also United States Thirty-year Bonds, amounting to from $16,000 to SIB,COO per mile, according to the difficulties to be surmounted on the various sections to be brg., for which It takes a second mortgage as security, and it is expected that not only the Interest, but the principal amount may be paid In services rendered by the Company in trans porting troops, mails, Sc. THE EARNINGS OF THE UNION PACIFIC RAILROAD, from its Way or Local Business only, during the year ending June 30th, 1068 amounted to over FOUR MILLION DOLLARS upon such a property, costing nearly three times their amount, ARE ENTIRELY SECURE The Union Pacific Bonds run thirty years are for 81,000 each, and have coupons attached. They bear annual interest, payable on the first days of January and July at the Company's Office in the City of New York, at the rate of six per cent. in gold. The principal is payable in gold at maturity. The price is 102, and at the present rate of gold, they pay a liberal in come on their cost. A very important consideration In determin ing the value of these bonds Is the length of time hey have to run. It Is well known that a long bond always commands a much higher price than a short one. It Is safe to assume that durine the next thirty years, the rate of interest in the United States will decline as it has done in Europe, and we have a right to expect that six per cent. securities as these will be held at as high a premium as those of this Government, which, in 1107, were bought in at from 20 to 22 per cent above par.• The export demand alone may produce this result, and as the issue of a pri vate corporation, they are beyond the reach of political action. The Company believe that their Bonds, at the present rate, are the cheapest security in the market, and the right to advance the price at any time is reserved. Subscriptions will be received in Lancaster by LANCASTER NATIONAL BANK. REED, MCGRANN & CO., BANKERS FIRST NATIONAL BANK and In New York at the Company's Pities, No. 20 Nassau Street, JOHN J. CISCO & SON, BANKERS, And by the Cbutparky'e Advertised <l.,ente throughout the United States. Remittances should be made in drafts or other funds par In New York, and the Bonds will be sent free of charge by return expre, s. Parties subscribing through local agents, wtl look to them for their safe delivery. A PAMPHLET AND MAP FOR 1889 has Just been published by the Company, giving fuller information than is possible in an advertise ment, respecting the Progress of the Work, the Resources of the Country traversed by the Road, the Means for Construction, and the Value of the Bonds, which will be sent free on application at the Company's office or to any of the advertised agents.
