Official returns of the registration in three fourths of the districts in South Carolina show a negro majority of 33,834. The registration of voters in North Caro lina began yesterday. At Wilmington 23 whites and 2 negroes registeFed. Private advices from British Columbia say that a strong feeling in favor of annexa tion to tho United States exists in that colony, Gen. Schofield has notified Gov. Pleri pont, of Virginia, that the regular winter session of the Virginia Legislature will be dispensed with. The Alabama Convention met yesterday at Montgomery and effected an organiza tion. Eighty-nine members, fourteen of them colored, were present. There have been bread riots in Exeter, England, for the last two days. Every pro vision shop In the town has been sacked, and the rioters were setting the to the houses yesterday. A Des Moines paper says: '"rhreshing machine assassinations have been going on for some time, and the cane-mill murders have just commenced, but bid fair to do their part in the job. About half the people of lowa who hut ye gone into the grave in 1807, have been killed by threshing machines. kerosene, or cane-mills," It appears to be settled that the United States Government has purchased St. Thomas and some of the other Danish West India Islands. The New York papers that are in the confidence of the State De partment at Washington confirm it. In a commercial view St. Thomas is considered to be a valuable acquisition. It is situated at the entrance of the Caribbean sea, and has ono of the best harbors in the world. A young officer was at a large party given in Leavenworth, when perceiving toad, he took it up and attempted to frigh ten the ladies with it. After a time he threw the frog on the ground, and then happened ip touch his face with his hand. A trifling Pimple, which he had on his face, instantly commenced swelling, and the most violent agony speedily forced him to return to his quarters. Eary effort was made to stop the inflammation, but all operations failed, and the unfortunate (Meer expired after two days' intense pain. A now and valuable agent, whereby sur gical operations are painlessly performed, without the risk which has hitherto attend ed chloroform, has just been discovered by tin English physician, who publishes au account of it in the London Medical Times. He states that by the use of this agent, in one case, perfect insensibility was produced in four minutes; in the second case in about six minutes; and in both instances where it was used the patients glided, so to speak, into complete amethesiu without a struggle. This new agent is the bichloride of methylene, which differs front chloro form in the rapidity with which it produces perfect insensibility.
