pea'intelligence THE NEW NOSTI.TA_L . pliblish • herewith .a detailed -statement of the expenditures for erecting the new Hos pital by the Board of Poor Directors. The cost it will be seen is less than one-half the estimate made by the County Commission ers, which we understand was something; like seventy thousand dollars, for which amount a tax was levied and is being now collected. This speaks well for the honesty and economy of the Board, and is an evi dence of faithfulness in the discharge of their duties which is highly creditable to them. Here are the figures: LABOR. JUPITER's Alooss.—Our readers should remember that on thelst inst., a celestial phenomenon will he witnessed which has only twice before been recorded in history. The planet Jupiter will at that date be seen unaccompanied by her satellites for nearly two hours, or her four moons, three will bum invisible on itecbunt of their passing simultaneously over Jupiter's disc, and the fourth will be immersed in the shadow of the planet. SHAD IivIND says: . The Wrightsville & We learn that very many dead shad have lately been seen floating on the water above the data, and others with scarcely life suf ficient to propel their bodies, making their way down the river. Wo presume this will be considered sufficient evidence of the elli eiency and silences of the fish " wier" placed in the dam during the past sum mer, and that our up river friends are much delighted with the prospects of having a plentiiul supply of shad the next season. It' they have, we rejoice with them, but to our mind it does not prove conclusively the success or this contrivance, as the means by which a more plentiful supply of the Tinny tribe may be obtained in the upper waters of our river. The many breaks iu the dant afforded much better passages for fish, and which, when repaired, will some what curtail the supplies so gladly antici pated. QUACKENHOS . ARITHAIETICS,—(LtIaCkPII boa' new arithineties claim to be the best in the field, and we think not without reason. Why 'l' Because their rules and analyses are at lin i.ably condensed. Because iu num ber anti variety of examples they aro un equalled. Because in interest and all other business operations (on which theyare par ticularly full) they teach the methods actu ally used by business men. Because, being written since the war, they are up to the times (which none of the old text-books are--)give present prices, teach that there is a difference between gold and currenoy, de scribe Government securities, and show how to find the comparative results of invest ments in them. New York, Brooklyn, Jersey City, &c., have adopted them for their Common Schools, and we think their merits have only to be known to introduce them generally. OUGHT TO STOP. —The good old Rain God Jupiter Pluvius has favored us tbr the last few days with rain enough, and it is time now that he should desist for a while. The danger now is, if he keeps on, that the potato crop will be a failure owing to the rot, and that whatever of the oat crop still remains 'uncut will be destroyed. Hold off now old God for a while and let us have some fine weather. USEFUL INFORMATION FOR FARMERS.— The Uniontown Standard gives the follow ing important information for wool grow ers: "If sheep are kept in the same lot with cows or fat cattle, no dogs will disturb them. As soon as the dogs approach them they run to the cattle, who drive off the dogs. A farmer of thirty years, in Selby, by adopting this plan, never lost a .sheep by dogs, although in the neighborhood the dogs killed sheep to the north and south of him." 119 00 192 00 ACCIDENT ON THE RAILROAD. — The pas senger train, usually known as the " Day Express," which left the depot on Tuesday at 3.20 P.
