tOrdlattAMO. The Albany Prhioner's , Staten t. The .New York Herald gives the follow . ing.statement of George W. Cole, who de liberately killed Mr. L. .Harris Hisooek, member', of the New York State Conven . . tlon, at Albany, on Tuesday: The following is a statement of the prisoner. The cause of the tragedy is this: I had a friend, H. L. Hiscock; I thought him the best friend I had in the world; I have a wife and two children ; she is as' pure as snow, or was before he became acquainted with her ;in 1813.1 I in the army, first as a private, and lastas a major general; I was in the army five years dur ing the war; in 1884. my wife was taken sick and expected to die, and sent for this ; lawyer to make her will, knowing him to 1 he a friend of mine; while she was in bed he came and lifted her up and kissed her ; all this time he expressed a world of friend ship for me and sympthy for her; after her recovery he came again; one evening he came under the guise of business, when the family with whom she boarded (relatives of her'e) were absent; when he started to leave she started to the door to bid him good night; he threw his arms around her, and endeavored by all means in his power to have criminal intercourse with her; she remonstrated, praying him to desist, which be filially did, but not until after shamefully insulting and expos ing her; she was still weak from the result of her sickness ; he then went away and she sank to the floor with shame and exhaustion, fearful to make any alarm, as he had been there so frequently before, and false opinion might be formed. She was fearful also of the consequences if I should know it. He afterwards called again, and expressed so much Barrow for his conduct that she did not make any exposure. After that he continued to call and endeavored by all means in his power to seduce her, and even' made a similar forcible effort again. She, oppressed with a feeling of shame and guilt for having p-rmitted him to kiss her, and for not having exposed the former interview did not dare to make an exposure. This was repeated a number of times, she resisting and preventing the full accomplishment of his purposes, and he making efforts at all times to overcome her by exciting her passions. At last, upon threats of exposure to me he desisted for a time; after my return from the army I had occasion to visit Washington about four months since, and while I was absent he went to my house and solicited my wife again, beseeching her that she would sub mit fully ; to this she (made an indignant refusal, but was still not relieved of his importunities, he taking every opportunity to annoy her, but he never fully accom plished his purpose. All this time I, as a husband, felt that there was something wrong in regard to my wife, because she seldom smiled, and seemed broken-hearted during all these three years. Only a week ago last Monday he met me in the street and asked me when I was going away again, which he had done at previous times, and therefore I noticed it. His guilty manner awoke the first sus picion in my mind as to my wife's virtue. Upon that, after my return to New York I wrote to a friend, asking him if he had ever seen:any improprieties between Mr.Hiscock and my wife. He replied that he had seen s uspicious circumstances. I immediately came home on Sunday morning last, and learned the above facts from the lips of my wife herself, when I found that he had be trayed the love of my wife and defiled her person, and when I found her utterly broken hearted and my home desolated, I felt distracted and as if I should be obliged to kill her destroyer. At her solicitation, that I might avoid so great a calamity to her and her poor little children, instead of hunting him up at once and shooting him as I felt inclined, I waited until to-day that I might become more calm. I came to Albany to day from Syracuse, with my wife, intend ing to take her to her sister's in Brooklyn, where she might have less opportunity to brood over her troubles, and then to return myself to Albany, where I learned Mr. iliscock was, force him at the mouth of the pistol on his knees to beg forgiveness for the great injury he had done me, and then to compel him to leave the country in ten days. I thought I had better have it off my mind, and I went over to his hotel, and when I saw him the fall of my DOOL heart broken wife and the disgrace of nay chil dren rose up before me and I could not restraint myself. I bad notspoken to him. I thought I was calm. I could not speak, something was in my throat and I could not say a word. At the stationhouse the prisoner being required to hand over every thing in his possession, he delivered his pistol, Via, and declared positively that he had retained nothing, but on being searched there was found concealed upon him along, sharp bladed, spring back knife, from which it is argued be contemplated suicide. About midnight he was removed to the jail. George W. Cole wont into the army as captain of cavalry at the commencement of the war, served with distinction, and left the service as brigadier general. He is brother of Cornelius Cole, United States Senator from California. He also has a brother now acting as American Consul at Acapulco. •Mr. Cole has been engaged for some time past as detective in the United States reve nue service in New York. His wife is con nected with some of the most respectable families of this State. gk•ttornep-at-rgaiu. B. C. lIREADY, No. 38 North Duke st., Lancaster A. J. REPARATOR CAP ILLI. For restoring hair upon bald heads from whatever cause it may have fallen out and forcing a growth of hair upon the face, t has no equal. It will force the beard to grow upon the smoothest face in from five to eight weeks, or hair upon bald heads in from two to three months. A few ignorant practitioners havens serted that there is nothing that will force or hasten the growth of the hair or beard. Their assertions are false, as thousands of living wit nesses (from their own experience) can bear witness. But many will say, how are we to distinguish the genuine from the spurious? It certainly is difficult, as nine-tenths of the dif ferent Preparations advertised for the hair and beard are entirely worthless', and you may have already thrown away large amounts in their purchase. To such we would say, try the Reparator Cappilll ; it will cost you nothing unless it fully comes up to our representations. If your Druggist does Lot keep it, send us one dollar and we will forward it, postpaid, together with a receipt for the money, which will be re turned you on application, providing entit satisfaction is not given. THE "VALLEY CITIFY" HAS BEEN GREAT LY IMPROVED AND STRENGTHENED SINCE LAST YEAR. One of them may be seen in the South-east corner of Centre Square, Lancaster City. As a Reaper and Self-Rake it has no equal in the field, and its claims to public attention are being appreciated by experience and trial. At the great trial of Reapers and Mowers and Self-Rakes at Auburn, New York, in July, 1888, the "VALLEY Uti.LEF " MOWER AND REAPER, and MARSH'S SELF-RAKE proved worthy of' the highest commendation and re ceived the favorable report of the Judges. As a Self-Rake, the Marsh Rake was the only one out of 20 Machines that was marked perfect (No. 40,) in cutting lodged wheat on the Sheldon Lot," and but one other Machine in the list that was marked even to No. 88 In the test, all the rest being below that number.— This was regarded as the great test of the trial in Reaping and Raking. See pages 41, 42 and 43 of the Report. The entire Report may be seen at our office. Manufactured by MARSH, GRIER .St CO., Mount Joy, Lancaster co., Pa. SHERMAN'S NEW PATENT AS YOU LIKE IT SKIRT 36 North Bth St., corner of Filbert. 86 This is not only a new fashion, but a new article of SKIRT, made on an entirely new principle, so novel and yet so perfect the ladles contend it should be called Perfection. We would here call particular attention to the AS YOU LIKE IT, or flexible joint ex tending down the front of the skirt; it is so constructed that the springs fold inwardly, but not outwardly, and readily yield to the slightest pressure, thus allowing them to col lapse, so that the skirt occupies the smallest possible space whilst sitting, riding, or in pass ing through a crowd, and yet the moment the pressure is removed, the skirt resumes its original and beautiful shape. The novelty and utility of this contrivance need but be seen to be appreciated. But for want of space we might here puulish thousands of extracts from letters, we are daily receiving, speaking in the highest praise of these Skirts. OUR CORSETS Are now so well known for their superior SHAPE, MATERIAL and WORKMANSHIP, that It is perhaps unnecessary for us to speak of them, further tb an to say teat we have greatly enlarged our assortment of Styles, both of our own make and importation, and can now safely defy competition. Y. recommend to investors the FIRST MORTGAGE BONDS CENTRAL PACIFIC R. R. CO Thle Company i 8 conetructing under the pa tronage of the ,ITNITED STATES GOVERNMENT, the Western end of the UREAT NATIONAL RAILWAY ACROSS THE CONTINENT, Their line will extend from Sacramento, California, across the Sierra Nevadan to the California State line, traversing the richest and most populous section of California. and thence through the great mining regions of the Territories, to the vicinity of Salt Lake City. It forms the sole Western link of the only route to the Pacific which is adopted by Con gress and aided by the issue of the United states Bonds. Their road is already completed, equipped and running for 14 miles from Sacramento to within 12 miles of the summit of the Sierras, and a large amount of tno work of Grading, Tunneling, dm, beyond that point has been accomplished. The First Mortgage Bonds of this Company afford unusual Inducements of Safety and Profits to Investors, for the following among ottleAreasons, viz : First. The rate of Interests le SIX Pita CENT. IN GOLD payable eeml-annually in the City of New York. Second. The Psuramsai Ls payable IN GOLD at maturity. Third. The cost of the Bonds. NxerarY-FIVE PER CENT. and accrued interest, is TEN PER CENT. less than that of the cheapest Six per Cent. Gold Bearing Bonds of the Government. Fourth. The United States Government pro vldev nearly half the amount necessary to build the entire road, and looks main ly to a small per tentage on the future traffic for re-payment. Fifth. Owing to this liberal provision, accom panied with Extensive Grants of Public Lands, by which the Government fosters this great national entegprise, Its success Is rendered certain, and its financial sta bility is altogether Independent of the contingencies which attend ordinary Railroad enterprises. Sixth. The Security of its First Mortgage Bonds is therefore ample, and their character for safety and reliability is equalled only by that of the obligations of the Govern ment itself. Seventh. The net earnings of the competed portion are already largely in excess of the Interest obligations which the Com pany will Incur on twice the distance, and are steadily Increasing, rendering the uninterrupted payment of the Inter est absolutely eertain. Eighth. At the present rate of Gold they pay nearly E 45 PER CENT. per annum, on the amount Invested. The Bonds are issued Be denominations 01 81,000 with semi-annual Gold Coupons attached payable In New York, and are offered for the present at 95 per cent. and accrued Interest tin currency) from January Ist, Orders may be forwarded to 115 direct, or through the principal Banks and' Bankers in all parts of the country.
