ST. LOUIS 0011,ELESPONDENG F. I Charkiton Omvention—No Noiiination Yet—A Game of Bluff—Southern and North- Western Delegathons—Seeet , elan et: —John a Sreektnridie and the Keystone State— One Hundred Gans for theNaminee—The Prise Fight— Temible "Steamboat Disaster—Ten Lives Last—Railroad ,dccident—&hreeLives Lost—Real Estate—Market Report, • d!e. An entire week has been consumed at Charleston, and vet-we are still In 'the dark as to candidate or platform. We should fudge, from the transactions of the past week, that the game of " bluff" hai been systematically played at Charleston—the one side insisting on the candidate, whilst the other is rampant for a platform that said can didate cannot consistently stand mon—both striving to bluff off the other. The threatened secession is a bold game of bluff—proclaimed to intimidate the delegates who are there for peace and harmony—for union and victory at all hazard!, whilst the threatened retirement of the North-West delegations is but a game of the same sort, in retaliation for the proposed secession of the Cotton States. This shrewd game will be kept up just so long as the Cor t vention tolerates it. The time for speculations in regard to candidates, has gone by. We have not changed our opinion as to Mr. Breckinridge being the choice of the Convention, and if Pennsylvania persists( in his nomination he will be the standard bearer of the DeMocratic party; if shedtops him for any other man, Douglas will be the nominee. The Keystone State has the man in its grasp, and if she - adheres, which we are inclined to think she will, the young Star of Kentucky will be the nest President of the United States—if she falters in her choice Stephen A. ..:_ ,- .Douglas will succeed James Buchanan. Wo do not anticipate a secession of the Cotton States, and if they do secede, the masses of those States will repudiate their delegations and rally around the nominee of the Convention, be it whom it may. Did our delegates leave the Convention, and come home and appeal to-the people, they could int influence a hundred votes against the regular nominee. But we anticipate no such revolt, and believe, as we have above said, that the whole difficulty Is a bold game of "bluff," sad will cease to soon as the nominee js proclaimed. As soon as the nominee of the Charleston Convention is known, the Young Men's Democratic Association of - this city will fire one hundred guns. Everything is in readi.. nesa and we expect to hear the roar this evening or to- morrow. The general impression prevailing here, is that Judge Douglas will be the man. Stale politics have been lost sight of, and the telegraph office is besieged every day, awaiting the announcement of the standard bearer. By the time this letter finds its way to the public eye, the Intelligence will have the National ticket flying from Its masthead. Next to the Charleston Convention is the international Prize Fight. On Saturday the intelligence was received here of the fight, and wherever you saw two man in coil versation, they were talking of Herman and Sayers. Little knots of people could be seen upon every corner of the streots, and the all absorbing topic was the great Prize Fight. We have very little local news to communicate. The steamer A. T. Lacy, bound from this port to New Orleans, took fire and burned to the water's edge at Island 16. The fire originated tram a spark catching In a bale of hay. She was immediately run hard on thq shore, when the demon spread with great rapidity, and thd boat in a tow moments was enveloped in one sheet of fire, and seven children—passengers—besides fo or lave of the crew perished is the flames or were drowned. A child cf Capt. Taylor, the commander, is among the lost. The Lacy was a first-class boat, and cost $69,000 ; she was Insured in this city for $lO.OOO. The boat and ' cargo area total lost—the latter valued at $150,000. On Monday last, a collision took place on the St. Louts and Iron Mountain Railroad, about twelve miles below this city, between an excursion and construction train, by which three or fourpeesons were killed, and several others more or less maimed. These killed, were Mr. John Simonds, formerly of the Banking firm of Lucas & Simonds and at the time of his death, Treasurer of the I. M. Tho Ashtabula (Ohio) Sentin.si, the organ of Joshua R, Giddings and of the .Abolitionists of the Western Reserve, Bays that if Judge McLean is nominated for President at Chicago an 'iceberg will be laid upon the heart of the Republican party." It expresses the opinion that the Judge could not carry Ohio if lie was nominated. On the contrary, the Indianapolis Journal, the leading Republican paper in Indiana, declares that there are thirty thousand Opposi tion voters In Indiana who would not vote for Mr. Seward, but that Judge McLean could easily carry the State. These Republicans seem to differ widely ea to who is the strongest man. The testimony shows conclusively that Mr. Barret was fairly and legally elected, but the numerical strength of his opponents in Congress will deprive'him,of it. In such an event, there will be no doubt of Mr. Barret's return to Congress at the next August election. He will ihen beat Blair 2009 votes. INCENDIARISEI IN CARLISLE.—AbOIIt 4 o'clock on Saturday morning a week, the large school building, in Carlisle. known as " the Old College," was discovered to be on fire, and before the flames could bo arrested the upper story was entirely destroyed. The building was occupied by four female schools, and the books, &c., of the' schools were also much damaged, and many utterly destroyed. The fire was evidently the work of an incen diary, as it started at the foot of the stairway, in the centre of the building. '1 he loss is partly, perhaps fully, covered by insurance in the North America Insurance company, of Philadelphia. A daring attempt was made on Saturday night to burn the Episcopal church, in the same borough. An entrance was effected throughone of the windows, and a quantity of combustible material placed in a closet under the stairway and ignited, hut ,the incendiaries closed the closet door, and thud, unthinkingly, smothered the flames before any material damage was done. GEORGIA POLITICS At a large meeting of the National Democ• racy, held here last night, addresses, were made by Mr. King, of Missouri, and Mr. Flournoy, of Arkansas. Their remarks were well received. At the close, a notice was given of a meeting to he held in this county next Wednesday, for the purpose of sending delegates to a State Convention to select delegates to represent Georgia in the Demo cratic Convention to be held in Baltimore. [may 8 ff 17 TO7, T HE O ,PUBLICS 2 The subscriber would respectfully inform the citizens of Lancaster county, that he has undertaken the publication of a Work designed to Instruct the different Officers of the Townships in their legal duties. The want of such a work has long been felt. The Laws of the State present to the casual reader, only a confused mass of Legislative matter, from which it ix almost impossible to separate the repealed Acta from these that are in force at present. The design of the proposed work, is to present to the Officers of the Township, a volume compiled from the Law as it now exists, separated from all Acts not now in being— a plain, concise, explicit statement of the duties of such officers, their powors and liabilities. It will embrace all the Officers of the Township—Justice of the Peace, Con stable, Supervisers of the Highways, School Directors, As sessors, Clerk, Auditor and Treasurer, together with the School, Naturalization, Election and Road Laws. White the design of the work, is to provide a ready guide in the transaction of Township business, in order to render it invaluable to all, we shall add a number of legal forms which are used In the every day transactions of business, together with such other matter, as shall make it is every. respect a reliable band book of reference, in all questions of townshie or local law. The compilaticn has been entrusted to a member of the bar who is in every way competent for the task, but in order to insure correctness, previous to going to press it will be submitted to the revision of other legal gentlemen /if acknowledged experience. The Work will be prepared in a neat and substantial form, bound in cloth, and will contain probably 350 pages. It will be published by subscription; price, $l,OO per cupy, payable on delivery of the work. It will be published about the first of September, 1860. But a few copies over the number subscribed for will be printed, and after publication, the retail price will invari ably be $1.25. The County will be thoroughly canvassed, and the sup port of the citizens is respectfully solicited. The human heart should be a Court, In which a neighbor's cause Could be presented, tried and judged By just, Impartial laws. Judge Rightly on the bench should sit, Who ne'er giv,pa judgment blindly, And by his side - the honored Judge. Well known as good Judge Kindly. The Scales of Justice, 'twixt the two, Well balanced should be hung, And not a word of evidence Be heard from Slander's tongue. Though in one scale the demon Wrong Ills gilded lies might lay, The angel Right, with golden truths, Should all his gilt outweigh. The Court should have a trusty bar, To bar out base Suspicion, And subtle Sophistry, who might Attempt to gain admission. The law should be that Rule of Right The Bible keeps in view : “Do unto others as ye would That they should do to you." In ev'ry case, the party tried, With justice should have mercy— This rule should ne'er be changed, except To make it vice versa. With such a Court in ev'ry heart, No others would be needed: A criminal, or civil case Would never more be pleaded; For, then, a man, a man indeed, As self would love his neighbor; And briefless lawyers have to earn Their bread by honest labor. When Blackstone they for latsstones left, And gave up law for leather, The lion fierce and gentle lamb Would rest in peace together. LEINAI7, No.l2l:AnthprontAtrest, Ill4ls4lolPhis4 a. apr 10 - et LS Ayer's Sarsaparilla A compound remedy, in which we have la bored to produce the most effectual alterative that can be made. It is a concentrated extract of Para Sarsaparilla, so combined with other substances of still'. greater alterative power as to afford an effective antidote for the diseases Sarsaparilla is reputed to cure. It is believed that such a remedy is wanted by those who suffer from Strumous complitizas, and that one which will accomplish their cure must _prove of immense service to this large claw ad our afflicted fellow-citizena. How completely this compound will do it has been proven by exper iment on many of the worst cases to be found of the following complaints :- Sonoma AND SCROPDLOLIS Commarre, ERITPIIONS AND Entrrrivn braxasxs, Vicars, Brorcass, Tratons, Ss= RHEUM. SCALD HEAD SYPHILIS AND SYPHILITIC AP PECZIONS, M ERCURIAL DISEASE, DROPSY, Nay- RALGIL on Tro DOOLOTGLEUE, Datarsrr, Drs- PEPSTA AND INDIGESTION, ERYSIPELAS Rosa on ST. Aarrlcorry's Pram, and indeed the whole class of complaints arising from laroarrr or THE BLOOD. This compound will be found a great pro- moter of health, when taken in the spring, to expel •the foul humors which fester is the blood at that season of the year. By the time ly expulsion of them many rankling disorders are nipped ;in the bud. Multitudes can, by the aid of this remedy, spare themselves from the endurance of foul eruptions and ulcerous sores, through which the system will strive to rid itself of corruptions, if not assisted to do this through the natural channels of the body by an alterative medicine. Cleanse out the vitiated blood whenever you find its impurities bursting through the skin in pimples, eruptions, or sores ; cleanse it when you find it is ob structed and sluggish in the veins ;• cleanse it whenever it is foul, and your feelings will tell you when. Even where no particular disorder is felt, people enjoy better health, and live longer, for cleansing the blood. Keep the blood healthy, and all is well; but with this pabulum of life disordered, there can be no lasting health. Sooner or later something must go wrong, and the great machinery of life is disordered or overthrown. At little Expense; No inconvenience ; Sarsaparilla has, and deserves much, the reputation, of accomplishing these ends. But the world has been egregiously deceived by preparations of it, partly because the • drug alone has not all the virtue that is claimed for it, but more because many preparations, pretending to be concentrated extracts of it, contain but little of the virtue of Sarsaparilla, or any thing else. During late years the public have been mis led by large bottles, pretending to give a quart Of Extract of Sarsaparilla for one dollar. Most of these have been frauds upon the sick, for they not only contain little, if any, Sarsapa rilla, but often no curative properties whatev er. Hence, bitter and painful disappointment has followed the use of the various extracts of Sarsaparilla which flood the market, until the name itself is justly despised, and has become synonymous with imposition and cheat. Still we call this compound Sarsaparilla, and intend to supply such a remedy as shall rescue the name from the load of obloquy which rests upon it. And we think we have ground for irresistible by it - has virtues which are by the ordinary run of the diseases it is intend ed to cure. In order to secure their complete eradication from the system, the remedy should be judiciously taken according to directions on the bottle. PREPARED BY DR. J. C. AYES & CO. LOWELL, MASS. Price, $1 per Bottle; Six Bottles for $5. Ayer's Cherry Pectoral, has won for itself such a renown for the cure of every variety of Throat and Lung Complaint, that it is entirely unnecessary for us to recount the evidence of its virtues, wherever it has been em ployed. Sirs, Having realized in my family important benefits from the use of your valuable preparation, Wieteer's Balsam of Wild Cherry,— it affords me pleasure to recommend it to the public. Some eight years ago one of my daughteri seemed to be in a decline, and little hopes of her recovery were entertained. I then procured a bottle of your ex cellent Balsam, and before she had taken the whole of the contents of the bottle there was a great improvement in liar health. I have, in my individual case, made frequent use of your valuable medicine,,and have always been benefited by it. I would, however, castles the public ayainst imposition, because there is a good deal of spurious Wistar's Balsam of Wild Pierre afloat throughout the country. 3ACOB .
