Three quarters of a century have -passed by since the United States declared themselves free and independent of Great Britain, yet tbo streets of our “ancieut aud honor able city” still bear tho uatnos of Kiug, Queen, and other names of Royalty. I would suggest, through your columns, that tho Coun cils pass a law, changing the name <-f *'Kiug street” to President street” (being the street iu which the present President lived for so many years, and which leads to his home at Wheatland.) and tuat “Queen street” be called “ Washington street The most western street on the plan of the city might 'with propriety bo called *• Jiuchanan street,” tn perpetuate the name of a name who came here young aud poor, and who has risun to the most exalted position on earth, as an incentive to the youth of our city in all time to come. In tho cities of Europe streets are named after their most distinguished inhabitants, and after important events. PULTON. For the Intelligencer. The Nomination for the Supreme Court- Gen. Win. A. Stokes. Tbo Decimation nf Chief Justice Lewis, and tho appoint ment of Judge Ula< k to a highly honorable position near tho President, have rendered it incumbent upon the Dem ocratic Convention now shortly to assemble, to place in nomination others, to fill those vacancies. In mahiUL; se lect ions, for the high and honorable position of Judge of tbo highest judicial tribunal iu tho iState, several considera tions should Weigh with our party, while certain qualified tions should bo inseparable from the candidate. With the party, faithfulness to its principles, advocacy of its tenets, and expediency ami policy in the choice—having reference to a conciliation cf all quarters and all interests, providing this last can be accomplished without sacrifice of honor.— should have great weight. To the candidate should belong a rich store of legal learning and experience, coupled with patience and acumen ; age sufficient to mature the judg ment, without impairing tho physical vigor so necessary to a worker; and a probity beyond tho shadow of suspicion, and without reproach. With an elective judiciary, when party Hues are closely drawn, as they are with us, it is the bounden duty of those to whom is delegated tho power, tu place in nomination ODly those whom the people, trusting to tho superior juL vantages for information alTorded their delegates, and col?- tiding iu their intelligence aud following their teadership may support without compromising their own interests, or those of society at large. And though it may be difficult to select one who combines in himself all of the qunliti'-a tions which cun?.titute that very ruro character—a great and upright judge—stiil our good old Comm mwealth may point with pride to some, who, in that behalf, could not fail to d ) bur honor. Without derogating in the slightest, from the character ofauyuneof the number of very respectable gentlemen whose uames have been mentioned iu connection with the office on the part of the Democracy, it is but doing simplo justice to that distinguished citizen of Westmoreland county —Ue oral William A.« Stokes—to remark that should he secure (as there is every prospect to believo he will) tho nomination for one of the vacancies on the Bench, the.success in the canvass will be a convincing proof ut the wisdom of the selection. To the citizeus of the western .part of the State, where Mr. Stokes is very extensively kuown as a lawyer, and therefore appreciated, and where he is unanimously sup ported, it is unnecessary to speak. Indeed it may be do ing violence to bis fame, as such, to say one word iu his fttvqj here. Certainly his reputation is sufficiently established amongst, the legal fraternity east of the mountains. Bnt as it is (mayhap) the misfortune of lawyers in the forensic displays which do them the greatest credit, to be heard but by few, and that, only in the immediate sphere of their practice, a slight allusion to this gentleman's ability at the bar, may be entirely appropriate. Wo have had the pleas ure of having heard Mr. Stokes before a court and jnry, and it is a gratifi.-atiou to testily to his merits. A more logical, concise, ami finished speaker, it has never been uurlotto admire. With a style cha«te and elegant, free from all verbiage, aud rid of the froth of rhetoric that too frequent ly hides tho clear stream of thought that we expect to see, he attracts, enchains, cuuvincea. lie puts flesh, and round ed outline, and beauty upon what, when it came tq his hands, was the dry aud rattling skulotou of a law poiut; he breathes into it the hreutli of life, and fixes it in the mind, a living fact. There are some judges aud lawyers who, after having spoken or written to a law question, leave it in a darkness more Cimmerian and chaotic, than they found it, and who, like that Roman Emperor, who caused his decrees to be written in very Btnaii characters aud placed at the top of high pillars, so that the people might not bo able to read tbeui and therefore be more readily en trapped into a violation of their provisions, seem only de sirous to conceal their meaning. Mr. Stokes.never errs on that side. As au ablo political writer and speaker, Gen. Stokes, is known all over our State. During the late trying campaign, there was no truer, more ardent, more devoted soldier, and in the West he did much to deprive the sophistries of Bur lingame and his foreign coadjutors of their vetiom. lie was ever at the outposts and in the trenches, and when he stood in the way, no foe passed him unharmed. Those who heard him in Lancaster, (for he was, here) will admit his power. Quiet, argumentative, with more of the oratory of the=bar than of the hustings, ho appeals to the reason, not to the passions, and is remembered, for reason is awake when the passions sleep. Not .only does Mr. Stokes (who is in the prime of life) Eossess the personal attributes necessary to attract support, ut expediency most imperatively demands that his name should be placed before the voters. Our enemies are work ing with a zeal worthy of a better cause. 'With a tact that does them credit, they have endeavored to impress into their service homo pride and local iuterest. With candi dates from every quarter of the State, they have avoided exciting jealousy in any section. The West demands Mr. Stokes’ nomination. H» is its ‘’favorite.” The West has no candidate in the Democratic ranks. The opposition there is strong. It is only by united action that it can bo de feated. Whatever can be done honorably and consistently to avoid distractioushould bo adopted ; and whatever right course will conduce to another glorious victory in Penn sylvania, it is the duty and obligation of every Democrat to propose. ' One brilliant light of the Supreme Bench has recently gone out, and another is Bickering in the socket, lot Dem ocrats consider well how their absence stay be supplied. * * *= * Hover's Ink, made in Philadelphia, is a great comfort to editors, and tve suspect even greater to compositors, seeing that its fluidity leaves no excuse for bad or charred writing— the great foes of type-setters. Company is now prepared to sell about 1,500.000 Acres of CHOICE FARMING LANDS in Tracts of 4-0 Acres and upwards, on Long Credits, and at Low Rates of Interest. These lands were granted by the Government to aid in the construction of this Road, and are among the richest and most fertile in tbe world. They extend from North Hast and North West, through the middle of the State, to tbe extreme South, and include every variety of climate and productions found between those parallels of latitude. Tbe Northern portion is chiefly prairie, interspersed with fine groves, and in tbe middle and Southern sections tim ber predominates, alternating with beautiful prairies and openiugs. The climate is more healthy, mild and equable, than any other part of the country —the air is-pure and bracing, while living streams and springs of excellent water abound. Bituminous Coal Is extensively mined, and supplies a cheap and desirable fuel, being furnished at many points at $2 to $4-per tou —and wood can be had at tbe same rate per cord. Building Stone of excellent quality also abounds, which can be procured for little more than the expense of trans portation.
