The extract may seem a little long at first, but never mind that : you will think it too short when you get through with it. The day was remarkably line ; our road lay through the pleasant part of the lions atonic—our cattle were sleek and and tine looking—the driver was civil and well dressed—while the coach itself was a mir acle of comfort. In the midst of this prospective and pres ent enjoyment an elderly lady, with a mon strous bandbox, a paper-covered trunk, and a little girl, are stowed away in the coach. Aud here began the trouble.— Before getting in, however— " Driver," said the lady, "do you know Deacon Hitchcock !" " No ma'am," replied the driver. "I've only druv on this road a fortnight. «I wonder if neither of them gentle men don't know him !" said she putting her head into the coach. "I don't" said one, whom we will call a wag; "but I know Deacon Hotchkiss, if that will answer your purpose." "Don't either of them other gentlemen know him?" No reply. " Well, then, I don't know whether to go in or not," said the lady; "because I .must see am Hitchcock before I go home. I am from the State of New Hamp shire, and the deacon was a particular friend of my husband—this little girl's father, who has been dead these two long years, and I should like.to see him mazing ly." " Does he live about here ?" inquired the-driver. " Well, I don't know for sartin, but he lives somewhere in Connecticut. This is the first time I was ever so far from home. I live in the State of New Hampshire, and it is dreadful unpleasant. I feel a little dubersome about riding all alone in a stage with gentlemen that I never saw before in all my life." " There is no danger, ma'am," said the driver, "the gentlemen won't hurt you." " Well, perhaps they won't, but it's ve ry unpleasant for a lady to be so far from home. I live in the State of New Hamp shire, and this little girl's--" "You had better get in ma'am," said the driver, With praiseworthy moderation. " Well, I don't know but 1 may as well," she replied ; and after informing us once more that she was from the State of New Hampshire, and that her husband had been dead two years, she got in and took her seat. " How much is it sir," asked the lady. "lour and sixpence," said the driver, "for yourself and little girl." "Well, now, that's a monstrous sight of money for a little girl's passage like that ; her father, my husband, has been dead these two long years, and I never was so far from home in all my life. I live in the State of New Hampshire. Its very un pleasant for a lady; but I dare say neither of these gentlemen would see me, a lone widow, imposed on." " I'll take your fare if you please," re peated the driver. 'How much did you say it, was--three and sixpence r asked the lady. 'Four and sixpence, if you please ma'am,' politely answered the driver. 'Oh ! four and sixpence." and after a good deal of fumbling and shaking of her pockets, she at last produced a half dollar and a York shilling and put them into the driver's hand. 'That's not enough ma'am,' said the dri ver ; I want ninepence more.' 'What ain',t, w•e in York State?' she asked eagerly. 'No ma'am,' replied the driver, 'it's six shillings, York money.' 'Well,' said the lady, 1 used to be quite good at reckoning when 1 was at home in New Hampshire ; but since I've got so far from home, I b'live I'm begining to lose my mental faculties.' 'l'll take that other niuepence, if you please," said the driver in. a voice a little nearer impatience. At last, after making allusion three or four times to her native State, and her husband, (happy man) she handed the driver a uinepence, and we were once more in motion. 'Do you think it's dangerous on this road P began the lady, as soon as the door was closed. a very lengthy way from home, in the State of New Hampshire, and if anything should happen I don't know what should do. BULLION EVER BE RICH It has become very much the fashion, now-a-days, to say, "Oh, young Bullion will be rich when his father dies :" and to understand thereby that young . Bullion is sure to be rich one of those days. But the proverb concerning a "slip be tween the cup and the lip" holds good in this ease as in all others, and young Bul lion may die before ()Id Bullion does, in which case lie would no'cr become rich— in this world's goods, at any rate. Nor is his chance of living so much greater than the Governor's (as he terms him,) as may be at the first glance imagined.f Suppose old Bullion to be fifty-five years of age, young Bullion twenty-five. Old Bullion is a bank director—young Bullion is "one of die b'hoys ;" old Bullion turns in every night at [el:l . —young, Bullion is "on a time" till 4 A. at. Balance of health is in favOr of old Bullion. Old Bullion takes a glass of brandy and water, and don't cat anything going to bed —young BUllion devours oysters, wood cock, broiled chicken, at horribly, indiges tible hours, and drinks champagne, chain= pagne brandy, and Scotch ale, till he blesses the man that invented soda water, when he wakes up next morning. Balance of health in favor of old Bullion again. Old Bullion goes down to the Bank in an omnibus about 1. 1 -) A. 31. About the same time young Bullion is going it with a fast horse to "the great race," incur ring the danger of being run over, of be ing run away with, and of running over somebody else and getting split. Balance of safety in favor of old Bullion. You don't find old Bullion promenading very often—the gout won't allow it; young Bullion is all the time on a tramp, over sidewalks under which are steam engines, crossing streets where runnings over are frequent. Old Bullion don't go traveling —young Bullion is out on the move all summer; and steamboat blowings up and railroad collisions are frequent now-a-days. Balance of safety still in favor of old Bul lion. Old Bullion is never out after dark young Bullion, like cats, travels principal ly at night, and stand§ a very fair chance, in the present state of society, of his head and a slungslict acquainted some dark Old Bullion has against him thirty years and the gout; young Bullion has the risk of late hours and champagne suppers, fast horses, "pistols and coffee for two," street crossings, boiler-burstings, railroad smash ups, and fractured craniums. So the chances, you see, are not so very much in young Bullion's favor, after all. ONE OF THE GOLDEN VOL - TH.—A Ger man poet compared life to a vast forest, full of young and vigroous trees, in the midst of which a wood-cutter is strolling. At first the forest is still, dense and flour ishing; but the wood-cutter's axe contin ues to strike its incessant blows scattering death all around it. The trees fall one by one, this one first, and then another; where their trunks stood close together the light begins to break through ; here and there broad vacant spaces grow larger and larger ; soon the regretful eye counts the victims by hundreds. The axe pursues its work of destruction : it assaults the oaks which still remain erect, hurls them down and widens the vacant space. Its blows re double in speed, and you might almost fancy that, like a good workman, it was anxious to finish its task before the close of day. In the morning the forest was as dense and tufted as a meadow where the grass grows luxuriantly; by evening it is a bare expanse. With but another hour and the last tree will have fallen. That forest is youth with its many friends ; that wood-cutter is death. It never wearies of its blows, and by the time that age has come, when the first wrinkles furrow the pensive brow, what gaps are al ready visible, and how many of those we loved best are gone ! First one died in the very flower of youth, her forehead decked in its flaxen curls, and she still smiling upon life, her heart still brimming with joy ous anticipations. Then another followed ; and, then, another ; a fourth fell suddenly, and in the very pride of his' strength.— Death strikes on, and soon we no longer count those we have lost; we think of them sometimes, and those who remain last ; have their memories full of phantoms which beacon them to hasten. An Irishman being asked on a late trial for a certificate of his marriage, bared his head, and exhibited a huge scar, which looked as though it might have been made with a fire shovel. Suigglefrits will you have some of the butter I" " Thank you, ma'am : I belong to the temperance society, and can't take any thing strong." A lazy fellow once declared, in a public company, that he could not find bread for the family. " Nor I," replied an industrious mechanic, " I am obliged to work for it. [ Woman's Empire State' is matri mony. Here she is always in the majority —always reigns, and sometimes storms. LANCASTER CITY, PA., TL,TE-DAY MORNING, JUNE 10, 1856. WHY SATAN NEVER DISTURBS A WO MAN.—Mahommedans relate the following story as an authentic and veritable piece of tradition, illustrative of the fact that the Devil himself has duties to perform in the world, and all things would go wrong if he were idle and neglected them : " In the days of Malionlined, there was au drab who had a very pretty wife. The devil formed himself into so exact and ac curate a likeness of her husbrud, that she could not for the life of her tell which of the two was her husband. Both claimed her, that is the real husband and the devil in his likeness. The case incited much interest in the neighborhood, but no solu tion of the difficulty could be•obtained. At length the case was brought before his Majesty the Prophet. Mahommed, af ter a little reflection, held up a certain earthen pot in his hand, with a spout like a teapot, and said to them both : " Now, whichever is the real husband will enter this vessel by the spout, and thus establish his claim to the woman." " The devil, as having more capacity in that way than the sturdy Arab of real flesh and bones entered at ones in the put as suggested. The moment he entered, Ma hommed closed the top of the spout and kept him shut in. By the time Mahommed had kept him shut up for a few days, it was ascertained that the world was getting wrong in all its machinery. Mahommed was therefore constrained to let the Devil out from his confinement, to take his ne cessary mangement of the affairs of the world. But before restoring him to liberty again, Mahommed extorted a solemn prom ise from him that lie would never trouble the 'fair sex' any more, but confine himself to what he could do among the 'male sex.' " 1-;; -- Au afflicted husband was returning from the funeral of his wife, when a friend asked him how he was. , 4 Well," said lie, pathetically, " I think 1 feel the better for that little walk." cousc tut.t„,tl.!::,l:ff,lll.l.l.l s i n 5 t:,7. 1 „ 1 , 1 ,1 Cluwp Pose: .t and th.• annt . 1 ii , nl.l nor 111, tram-acting thn• increa.
