A Country liVedding. " Did I ever tell you of a certain wedding I once attended? Its history runs in this wire:—On one stormy Thursday, last winter, as I was going to the poet office, I was accosted, by a young man, or old boy, (I don't know which, but shall leave you to judge.) with the inquiry— " I say, mister, can't ye tell me, sir, %%here Dom• inie Soule lives?" "I suppose I am the man you are seeking. - The young man's countenance changed. The expression of intense anxiety passed away, and was succeeded by one of ludicrous bashfulness. "Well, then, you're Dominic Souk be ~ e? Well, I want to see you a few minutes, if youv'e no ob jections." "None at all, sir. Be so kind as to walk into my study with me, where we can attend to your business by the side of a comfortable fire." Once in the study, be asked again. " You're Dnminie Soule, the minister, be ye?" am:' "Be ye all aloner said .he, looking sheepishly et the half open bed-room. "We are," said I, as 1 closed it. I knew well enough what he wanted, but was wicked enough to enjoy his embarrasment. Ater hitching and shuf fling. and hemming awhile, he spoke out— “ Well, I come for to get you to go and marry somebody +o 1 , i210.” 'lntitteil; and tor is it?' • . . ‘O, Ws 'only just sever, miles up here, you know • .1 « anted he should get some one else; it storm ed furiously, end 1 did not feel like buffeting a cold north-easter that nigh'. Slut he said, 'No; the old folks iv ant you, and the gal wants you, and SO do 1 want you, and the old folks wouldn't like it if we didn't have you, on know.' 'Well, if you must have me, I wish you would postpone it till better weather;. I will then come and marry you.' 'Oh, dear, that won't do, no how, for we've post poned it once, and we wouldn't postpone it again /or nothing.' 'Suppose you bring her down here.' 'No, that wouldn't do neither; cause the old folks wants to see us git married, and you must come any way; you sha'nt lose nOth'in: The poor fellow begged so hard, I concluded to go, and accordingly hired a horse and cuter, and about five o'clock started on my very novel wedding mission. I found the travelling exceed ingly bad all the way, and' particularly so after I left the main road. At length I reached the log house in which the fair bride lived. Hitching my horse, I went to the door and knocked, when a stern voice bade me come in. Entering the house, I was invited to nit down with all my over-clothes on. I asked the old man it they were going to have a wedding there that evening. He said they were. 1 then looked round td see, if I could, where the parties were coming from. There was but one door to the house, and that let cut into the world. Very soon, however, I heard a clattering up stairs, and to my astoni4iment, the bridegroom and bride came down the ladder. He backed down leading her by both hands. They were seated. . 'lf you are ready for the ceremony, you will please rise.' They stared at each other, at the old folks, at me, but sat still. Twice I repeated it, and twiee was met by the same vacant stare. 'lf you want to get married, stand up,' said I.— That they understood, and I proceeded to make the twain one. When I came to this part of the cer emony, the matter ran thus: 'Do you take this woman?" &c. sartinly, sir.' • ','Do you promise to love her above all otheriq'Szc. 'Why, said he, 'l've done so this long time.' 1 almost (argot the solemnity of the occasion in my efforts to suppress laughter. When I came to the bride with this, 'Do you take this man?' &c. 'He's took me, hain't he, for to be his wife; he's my husband, then, without my takin' him.' 'Do you promise to love him above all others?' 'l'll love him just as , long as he loves me, and that's long enough.' 1 ,smiled, but succeeded in governing myself so a's to conclude the ceremony, which, throughout, was of the same unique character. When it seas over, the bridegroom passed around a bowl of good old 'strap, and then gave me a cigar. Just as 1 was leaving, he gave me some change, which I put in a separate pocket, to know just hose much I had. When I got home, I paid ten shillings for my horse and cutter, and on counting my change, found that he had given inn the sum of six and six pence. But, as he .had.said, 1 didn't lose nothin'— the other three and six-pence I had in fun. ANIORISitS imam Put:stn.—The men who flitter women do not know them sufficiently, and the man who only abuses them does not know them at all. Romances generally end with a marrage. And many young girls, when they leave school, would wish to go through the romance of life=as they do most romances—by beginning at the end. Women should rule, but not govern If you wish to learn the worst fault of . a woman praise her highly to her lriends. VVoman,is a beautiful book, that too frequently is condemned for its errata. You can generally tell how popular you are with a lady, by thelength 'of time she keeps you wait ing whilst dressing, to receive. A. fan is a Most handy instrument for those who have lost the art of blushing. Vows are bad money—the I 0 U's and postobits with which a man pays a women the debts of his heart. If a young lady has a purse with two ends— silver in one end and gold in the other—she is sure to open the gold end first. • The only time when woman talk much amongst one another, is when they are waiting for the gen tlemen after dinner. The eyes of a pretty woman are the interpreters of the language of her heart. They translate what her tongue has a great difficulty in expressing. If you wish to close lady's lips, just ask her age. Few women keep a diary after their first love. Tell me how many lady's maids a lady has had, and I will tell you her temper. A man who has loved Madly, will laugh at his madness as soon as he gets cured of it; but a wo. man never laughs upon such a subject. With her love is a madness of which she never sees the lolly. I don't know which is worst, a man 'who mar • ries for money, or a woman who plays at cards. The signal for conversation amongst women is when a pretty girls begins to sing. Women will forgive everything in a man except his being a bore—everything 'in a woman except ; her being pretty. Female forgiveness, illimitable as it appears to be, has however, its limits. A woman will forgive an angry word, or a sneer, or a shrug of the shoul ders, or a slight elevation of the nose, or a pinch, or a scratch—she may even be brought to forgive her being prettier; but, to her dying day, she will never forgive her wearing diamonds when she has none herself. To paint angels, painters have borrowed the likeness of woman; to paint devils, the likeness of man. AN EXPP.NSIVB Rine.—A Yankee ship master, in St. Petersburg, Russia, recently got upon the statue of the Collossal Horse in the Square, and seated himself behind Peter the Great. The fun cost him $6OO, the amount of the fine. When the Captain remonstrated with the Judge at the large ness of the fine, saying it was rather an expensive ride, the Judge good nstureilly replied, that the cap tain never before rode so expensive a horse: The Sabbath Bell Peal on, peal on—l love to hear 'The old church ding-dong soft and clear ! The welcome sounds are doubly blest With future hope and earthly rest; Yet were no calling cha4ms found To spread their cheering echoes round, There's not a place where man may duel! But he can heat, the SaltLind' boll. Go to the woods when winter's song flow is like a famished wolf along, Or when the south wind. 4 scarcely turn, The light leaves of the trembling term— Although no cloister-chiines ring there, The heart is called to faith and prayer; For all Creation's voicrsj The tidings of the Sahli ,th bell. Let the vast ocean be thy.horne, Thou , lt find a God up .n 1 the foam; In rippling swell or stormy roll, The crystal waves wake thy soul, And thrt shalt feel the hallowed spell, The lark upon his skyward way, The robin on the hedge-way spray, The bee with the wild thime's bloom, The owl amid the cypress gloom; .
