WASHINGTON, .rll 15.
SENATE.—Mr. Bright presented the creel fiats
of Mr. Alerriwether appointed a Senator.' from K. n
tacky in place of Mr. Clay, deceased, until the Ist
of September next. Mr.MerriWether. appeared and
was sworn.
Mr. Bright said the limitation in the appointment
involved a question which might come up hereafter
for decision.
Douglass doubted the c onstitutionality 01
such an appointment, and suggested a reference of
Mr. Merriwether's credentials to the Judiciary Com
mittee.
Mr. Butler opposed the reference of the cieden
tials, as raising the question prematurely.
Mr. Gain favored the reference.
After some further remarks the subject was
droppet
Mr. Hunter moved that the Semite proceed to the
consideration of the resolution, fixing a tierie f l y the
adjournment of Congress, proposing to aalerel the
resolution, so as to make it the 'dual of August.
The mottou was agreed to and the resolution ta
ken up.
Mr. Hunter having submitted his amendment,

Mr. Groin moved to lay the resolution on the ta
ble which was agreed no•th —yeas 12, nays
Mr. Hunter', amendment was then rejected by a
tie vote.
The resolution then alter being further debated.',

taken up, and all the amendments of the Hose to
the Senate amendments, were concurred in. except
ing three, and the bill directed to be returned to the
House.

and Western extra at $4,315 per bbl. Fresh ground
Penn's is still held at $1,25. Sales in lots for the
l'ordy of the retailers and bakers at 54,25 for
c oinmon and good brands, ansi $4,311a. 4,87/ fur
esira, as in quality. In Rye Flour and Corn Meal

GRAIN. — The market is poorly supplied with
WAletr. and it is wanted. Sales of 3000 barrels,
prime Peun'a white at $1,03. A lot of ropersor

remain, quiet. Buyers offer 54,12; tree!y, but

saie of City Mills Flour. Holders of new Flour

GRAlN.—Wheat comes in a little more freely.—
Sales of new to-day at 85 a 95 cts. fur fair to prime
reds; 95 a 95 cts. for white, and 105 tts. for family

96 cen ts, and of old white et 100 cents. Corn is
scarce. Small sales of white at 58 a 59 cents, and

gross. The balance (125 head) driven to Philadel

a large number of Locust Trees growing all over

feet long, and 42 feet deep. A Wagon Shed and

have issued their Precept to me directed, requiring
me, among other things to make Public Proclama
tion throughout my Bailiwick, that the court of Oyer
and Terminer and General Jail delivery: Also, a
court of General Quarter siessions of the Peace and
Jail Delivery, will commence in the city of Lancas
ter in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania, on the
thintllforiclay of August next, 1552; in pursuance of
which precept,
PUBLIC NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN to the
Mayor, Recorder, and Aldermen of the city of Lap
caster, in the said county, and all the Justices of
the Peace, the coroner, constables, of the city and
county of Lancaster, that they he then and there,
is their own proper persons, with their rolls, re
cords and examinations, and inquisitions, and their
other remembrances, to do those things, which to
their offices appertain in the behalf to be done; and
also, all those who will prosecute against the pris•
oners who are, or then shall be in the Jail of the
said county of Lancaster, are to be then and there
to prosecute against them as shall be just.

Renault, and published by Benjamin Tanner, En
graver, Philadelphia. The size of the print is 25
by 34 inches, and was originally published to sub-:
scribers at $l2 in the sheet. .
EXPLANATION. •
•
THE liISTOBE.—in the first and grand plan are.
exhibited three large groups of the principal offi
cers' who were present at the transaction, with a
faithful likeness of each.
. .
In the first group ,is seen General Washington,
General Itucliambeau, General , Lincoln, Colonel
tiamilton, an old farmer eager to contemplate the
scene, Billy the servant, and the Horse of General'
Washington.
In the second group are American and French
Officers, General Roos, Secretary Wilson„the Duke
de Luazua and the Marquis de La-Fayette.
The third group is descriptive of the British sur
rendering their arms ' Lord„ Cornwallis, General
O'Hara, Commodore Simmons ,, Colonel Tarlton,
with two fingers cut off, Lieutenant. Colonel Ralph
Abercrombie, Lieutenant ColonerDundas, Lord
Chewton, due. Lord Cornwallis appears present
ing his sword to the first General Officer he meets,
but General Washington in pointed out to him as the
only person to whom he is to surrender his sword.
On the heights and in the distance are the dilfer=
ent armies and crowds of spectators. The 'House
of Secretary Wilson, occupied by Lord Cornwallis
and his staff, which was bombarded and pierced
with balls; the Marquis de La Fayette haring re
marked that they were carrying dishes for the din
ner of Lord Cornwall's, asked leave of General
Washington, to serve him a dish of his own conk =
ing, and immediately after several bomb-shel a fell
through the roof on the table, and wounded some,
ant dispersed the party.
THE ALLEGORY.—On the left is erected a monu
ment in honor ofthose illustrious heroes who sac
rificed. their lives and. fortunes to insure to their
fellow-citizens, the Liberty and Independence they
now enjoy.
