Murder—Much excitement was .Produced in our
Borough on Tuesday morning a week by the an
nouncement that a murder had lieen committed
about tt o'clock, the previous evening. It ap
pears that Barney Anders, a day-laborer, has been
living on bad terms with his wife for a long time,
and had frequent quarrels with her', said to be ow
ing to her immoral conduct. There is no doubt
that she was an unfaithful and loc:ie woman, and it
is said that she frequently taunted her husband with
her own infidelity. She had her ihusbacd put to
jail last winter for ill-treating her, and he had been
out but ten or twelve days. It is said that on
Monday night, he went into his house and had
some words with his wife, and While they were
quarreling two men came and tapped on the win
dow outside. Barney Went out to see who was
there, and while he was out she locked the door
and refused to let. him in again. Ille their broke
open the door, knocked his wife down and drawing
a razor from his pocket, cut her throat from ear
to ear. He was soon afterwards arrested arid com
mitted to, prison. Coroner Freerfien held an in
quest Oil 'Tuesday and the jury returned a verdict
in accordance with the above facts.--Eusiciii Argue.

Boston, March 3lst.—Accoutit4: from Buenos
Ape; to Feb. 2d, via England, confirm the account
of Rosas' defeat in every particular. His cavalry
were literally rode down .by the holstein cavalry
in the service of the Brazilians. :Bosas, disguised
as a sailor, succeeding in reaching the English
steamer Locust with his daughter. 1. Gen. Marcillo,
commandant at Buenos Ayres, offered to capitulate
and the foreign diplomats were trying to arrange
matters amicably. Gen. Urguiza'a army number
ed 28,000 men, and SOO horses and forty pieces
of artillery. The naval commanders of the differ
ent nations were about to land forces at Buenos
Ayres to protect the persons and 'property of for
eigners. The cavalry of Rosas were routed early
in the battle, but his infantry made a desperate
stand. Business at Buenos Ayresj was at a stand
still.
The Canada also brings intelli g ence that the
Austrian war steamer Ancona had been stranded
on the coast of Dalmatia and the crew, of 120 souls,
had all perished.

Philadelphia, March 31st.—Corbner Goldsmith
held an inquest in Oxford, this morning , over an
infant child 4 months old, which grad been killed
by its id ane mother, Mrs. HiILI She had been
crazy since Christmas. Her son, a boy 6 years old,

Harrisburg, March 31st.—The Senate to-day
passed the bill prohibiting the sale,of liquor except
under great restrictions, by a vote of 17 to 15.
Utica, March 31st.—It has been snowing all day,
with a very cold wind. Ice is now forming.
Mammoth Steamers.—We see it stated in the Lon
don Times that a proposition is on toot to build
iron steamers of 720 feet in length, with 90 feet
beam, and 36 in depth, with four engines of 1001)
horse power, and a screw, while there will be eight
masts, with huge latteen sails. The vessels are to
be built of iron, and will not only, he shot but fire
proof; and, a novel method, though simple, and for
strength known to every schoolboy, their immense
length renders them more safe than those of smal•
ler construction. It is calculated to carry 2000
passengers, with a theatre for amusements, &c., and
could, in case of war, open a battery of three hun
dred guns. This projected scheme is for the pur
pose of bringing the English Colonies within a
month's reach of London.
The Weather at the South and Ifest.—The Wood,
ville (Miss.) Whig of the Gth of l March says :
"The Spring has opened with a sudden burst of
beauty. The wilderness has commenced to bud
and blossom. The thermometer, for days past, has
been up to summer heat. The farther is planting
his seed in waiting for the early rain." The Nash
ville Advocate of the 13th says:---," We have had
a most delightful season thus tar during the mouth
of March. Vegetation is putting forth rapidly,
and is perhaps a month in advance of the spring
of 1851." Very different has it been with us at
the North.
Heavy Claims.—The heirs of !Gen. Lafayette
have brought suit to recover several hundred acres
of land, having a front of GOO yards beyond the
old fortfications at New Orleans. This is a portion
of the 11,620 acres of land grunted to Lafayette by
Congress.
EXTENSIVE %Nit ROBBERY.—,The agency of
the Central Railroat Batik, of Georgia, at Atlanta,
was entered by some adroit burglar, on the WM,
and robbed of $20,000 in notes and specie. Two
men, named Klyde and Reid, are suspected orthe
robbery, and a reward of $1,001) has been offered
for their arrest.
INTERESTING TO GRAIN GROWERS AND FLOUR
DEA txas.—The Washington had/igen, fr announces,
from information received of C: Gro , be, U. S. Con
sul for Hesse Cassel, Hesse Darmstadt, and Hanover,
that in consequence of the gener4deticiency of the
last crop of grain, and the high price occasioned
thereby, the States composing' tbe Zoll•Verein of
Germany have passed a Decree, that from the first
of tile present month to the first oil September next,
grains, legumes and flour can be imported into the
1011-Verein free of duty. The impOrt duty on grain,
previous to said decree, was about seven — ls'ent a
bushel, and that on flour amounted to a prohibition,
being two dollars and fifty cents per barrel.
Terrible Steamboat Explosion.
MADISON, lA, April 3.—The steamer Redstone

in all on board, blew up as she Was backing out
from Scort's landing, about three miles above Car
rolton, at half-past two o'clock this afternoon.
The force of the explosion was terrific, and com
pletely shattered the boat, which iminediatelyAank
in twenty feerof water.
Of the passengers, a large proportion are lost
and, of the crew, only the captain and clerk are sa
ved. The former is severely, if not fatally injured.
Up to 7 o'clock this evening, fifteen dead bodies

she was selected as a victim. We sincerely con

behind her. She has passed away in the freshness

calm, tranquil and happy. Our faith and belief

Dear sir: 1 delayed answering the receipt of
four preparation, until I had an opportunity of wit
nessing its effects in my five family, or in the
families of my friends.
This I have now done with a high degree of sat
isfaction, in cases both of adults and children.
I have found it, as its ingredients show, a pow:
erful remedy fikt colds, and coughs, and pulmonary
diseases. a PARKER CLEAVELAND, M. D.

From an OverWer in the Hamilton Mills, in this city.
Dr. J. C. Ayer : 1 have been cured of the worst
cough I ever had in thy life, by your "Cherry Pec
toral," and never Ittil, when I have opportunity, of
recommending it to others.
Your., respectfully,
S. D. E➢taasox.
Read the following, and see if this medicine is'
worth a trial. The patient had become very fee
ble, and the effect of the medicine was unmistaka
bly distinct:—
United States Hotel, Saratoga Springsa
July 5, 1849. ss
Dr. J. C. Ayer,—Sir I have been afflicted with
a painful affection of the lungs, and all the symp
toms of settled consumption, for more than ayear.
I could find no medicine that would reach my case,
until I commenced the use of your "Cherry Pec
toral," which gave me gradual relief, and I have
been ' , caddy gaining my strength till my health , is
well nigh restored.
While using your medicine, I bad the gratifica
tion of curing with it my 'everted friend, Mr.
Truman. of Sumpter District, who had been sus
pended from his parochial duties by a severe attack
of bronchitis.
I have pleasure in certifying these facts to you,
And am, sir, yours respectfully,
• J. F. CALHOUN, of South Carolina.
o:7"The following was one of the worst of cases
which the physicians and friends thought to be in
curable consumption :
CHESTER, Pa., Aug. 22, 184 G.
J. C. Ayer,—Sir: I was taken with a terrible
cough, brought on by a cold, in the beginning of
last February, and was confined to my bed more
than two months. Coughing incessantly night and
day, I became ghastly and pale, my eyes were sun
ken and glassy, and my breath very short. Indeed,
I was rapidly failing, and iu such distress fbi breath
that but little hope for my recovery could be en
tertained. Whiie in this situation, a friend of
mine, (the goy. John Keller, of the slethodist
church) brought me a bottle of your Cherry Pecto
ral, which I tried more to gratify h'm, than from
any expectation or obtaining relief. Its good effect
nduced rue to continue its use, and I soon found
my health much improved. Now in three menthe,
I am well and strong, and can attribute my cure
only to your great meiciae.
With the deepest gratitude, yours, &c.,
JAMES GODFREY.
