[oct 30-3m-40 Pure Fresh Cod Liver Oil. THIS new and valuable Medicine, now used by the medical-profession with such astonishing efficacy in the cure of Pulmonary Consumption, Scrofula, Chronic Rheumatism, Gout, General De bility, Complaints of the Kidneys, &c., &c., is pre pared from the liver of the Cod Fish for medicinal use, expressly for our sales. Extract from the London Medical Journal. “C.J.B. Williams, M. D., F. R. S., Professor of Medicine in University College, London, Consult ing Physician to the Hospital for Consumption, &c., says: I have prescribed the Oil in above four hun dred cases of tuberculous disease of the Lungs, in different stages, which have been under tnv care the last two years and a half. In the large number of cases, 206 out of 234, its’ use was followed by marked and unequivocal*-improvement, varying in degree in different cases, from a temporary retarda tion of the progress of the disease and a mitigation of distressing symptoms, up to a more or less com plete restoration to apparent health. “ The effect of the Cod Liver Oil in most of these cases was very remarkable, ftven in a few days the cough was mitigated, the expectoration dimin ished in quantity -and opacity, the night sweats ceased, the pulse became slower, and of better volume, and the appetite, flesh and strength were gradually improved. “In conclusion, I repeat that the pure fresh oil from the Liver of the Cod is'more beneficial in the treatment of Pulmonary Consumption than any gent, medicinal, diatctic or regimenal, that has yet been employed.” As we have made arrangements to procure the Cod Liver Oil, fresh from head quarters, it can now be had chemically pure by the single bottle, of in boxes of one dozen each. Its wonderful efficacy has induced numerous spurious imitations. As its success depends en tirely upon its purity, too much care cannot be used in procuring it genuine. Every bottle having on it our written signature, may be depended upon as genuine. Pamphlets containing an analysis of the Oil, with notices of it from Medical Journals, will be sent to those who address us free of postage. JOHN C. NO other Medicine has ever been introduced to the public that has met with such unparalelled success, as Dr. Soule’s Oriental Balm Pills.— Having nepn but six years before the public, and the advertising small when compared with most other medicines, yet they have worked their way into every State in the Union and Canadas. They have absolutely become the standard Medicine of the day. They are purely vegetable and so admi rably compounded that when taken in large doses they speedily cure acute diseases, and when taken in small doses they operate like a charm, upon the most delicate, nervous female, and have raised numbers from their beds when all other remedies had failed. We here refer to but a few of the many miraculous cures effected by the use of said Pills. Spinal Affection. —Anna Wood, of Rutland, Jefferson county, N. Y., was cured, after she had been confined to bed 5 years, with Spinal disease and Abscess of the Lungs. The bill of her regular Physician (Dr. Johnson, of Clay,) had amounted to $6OO. See circular. Scrofula and Nervous Debility. — Mrs. Down, of Clay, N. Y., was cured of Dyspepsia, Nervous Debility, and Scrofulous affection of the head, after she had been confined six months and all other medicines had failed. Cough and Consumption Cured. —Wm. Bently, of Pickering, C. W., was cured of a severe cough after he had been confined to his bed for a long time, and was given up by the Physicians. He had used most of the oough medicines of the day, and was supposed by his friends and physicians to be in the last stage of Consumption. Dyspepsia. —A. B. F. Ormsby, of Syracuse, N. Y., was cured of Dyspepsia, so severe as not to he able to work for two years. Wm. Smith, of Greenwich, Conn., was cured of a severe case of Dyspepsia, Costiveness and Nervous Debility, of years standing, after expending, large sums of money to no purpose. See circular. We beg leave, however, to call public attention to the following letter, addressed to a citizen of this county by the superintendent of an extensive manu facturing establishment in Franklin county: Chahbebsbubg, April 28, 1849. ISAAC R. DILLER Mb. Henby E. Leman :—Your favor of the 25th inst., is at hand, and in reply say that the Grind stones we run with Wortz’s wheel are from 5 to 6 feet high, 9 to 12 inches thick, weighing irom 3 to 5000 lbs. We formerly used an undershot wheel 12 feet wide and 14 feet high. Our head in an ordinary stage of the water is about 3 feet, 3 or 4 inches. Sometimes much less than that. With the old wheel we run two grindstones. In the same place we have now four of Wortz’s wheels (3 36 and 1 40 inches,) running four grindstones and one trip hammer weighing about 80 lbs. with less water and doing more work in the same time. In regard to the quality of the wheel for the purpose of. grinding, it is far superior to any I have ever used or seen used, and for a low head I believe it is the best wheel in use—during the whole winter (which has been unusually cold) we have not been affected at all with the ice, and in high water at a stage which would stop the old wheel entirely, we now find no inconvenience from back water.’ Any fur ther information on the subject I will be happy to communicate, or il you could make it convenient to visit Chambersburg I will take great pleasure in showing you the wheels. TAKE PARTICULAR NOTICE. There is a habit which boys teach each other at the Academy or College—a habit indulged in when by himself, in solitude, growing up with the boy to manhood; few of those who indulge in this perni cious practice are aware of the consequences until they find the nervous system shattered, feel strange and unaccountable feelings, vague fears in the mind. The individual becomes feeble, he is unable to labor with accustomed vigor, or to apply his mind to study; his step is tardy and weak, he is dull, ir resolute. ' If the Solitary Vice Is continued, the procreative power is destroyed, and marriage rendered impossible, a long train of nervous affections follow, the countenance is down cast, the eyes without natural lustre, shamefaced ness is apparent. These are symptoms which should awaken the attention of those similarly afflicted. If the Victim, Be concious ol the cause ol his decay, and quit it he suffers under those terrible nocturnal and invol untary emissions, which weaken and shame him, producing mental and physical prostration. If he emancipates himsell before the practice has done its worst, and enters matrimony, his marriage is unfruitful, and his sense tells him that this is caused by his early follies. Persons of all ages can now judge what is the cause of their declining health, losing-their vigor, becoming weak, pale and emaciated. Young Men ! BACHMAN, ATTORNEY AT LAfV: Office in M arket Square, in the room lately occupied by G. W. M’Elroy, Esq. apri!24>49 ' t£l3 THE ORIGINAL DISCOVERER OF THE Genuine Sarsaparilla* OLD DR. TOW;NSEND is now about7o years of age, and has long been known as the author and .discoverer of the Genuine Original Townsend Sarsaparilla, Being poor, he was compelled to limit its manufacture, by which means it his been kept out of market, and the sales circumscribed to those only who had proved its worth, and known its value. It had reached the ears oPraany, never theless, as those persons who had been hofcled of sore diseases, and saved from death, proclaimed its excellence and wonderful HEALING POWER. Knowing, many years hgo, that he had, by his skill, science and experience, devised an article which would be of incalculable advantage to man kind when the means would be furnished to bring it into universal notice, when its inestimable virtues would be known and appreciated. This time has come, the means are supplied; this Grand and Unequalled Preparation is manufactured on the lar gest scale, and is called for throughout the length and breadth of the land, especially as it is found incapable of degeneratibn or deterioration. Unlike young S. P. Townsend’s, it improves with age, and never changes, but for the better; because it is prepared on scientific principles by a scientific man. The highest knowledge of Chemistry; and the latest discoveries of the art, have all been brought into - requisition in the manufacture of the old Dr’s Sarsaparilla. The Sarsaparilla Root, is well known to medical men contains many medical properties and some properties which are inert or useless, and others which if retained in preparing it for use, produce fermentation and acid, which is injurious to the system. Some of the Sarsaparilla are so volatile, that they erftirely evap orate and are lost in the preparation, if they are not preserved by a scientific progress,, known only to those experienced in its manufacture. Moreover, these volatile principles, which fly off in vapor, or as an exhalation, under heat, are the very essential medical properties ol the root, which give to it all its value. Any person can*boil or stew the root till they get a dark colored liquid, which is more from the col oring matter in the root than from anything else ; they can then strain this insipid or vapid liquid, sweeten with sour molasses, and then call it “ Sar saparilla Extract or Syrup.” But such is not the article known as the GENUINE OLD DR. JACOB^TOWNSEND’S SAKSAPAIULLA, This is so prepared, that all the inert properties of the Sarsaparilla root are first renfoved, every thing capable of becoming acid or of fermentation, is extracted £ rejected; then every particle or medical virtue is secured in a pure and concentra ted fprm; and thus it is rendered incapable of los ing any of its valuable and healing properties. Pre pared in this way, it is made the most powerful agent in the CURE OP INNUMERABLE DISEASES. Hence the reason why we hear commendations on every side in its favor by men, women, and children. W e find it doing wonders iri the cure of Consumption, Dyspepsia, and Liver Complaint, and in Rheumatism, Scrofula, Piles, Costiyeness, all Cutaneous Eruptions, Pimples, Blotches, and all affections arising from 6 IMPURITY OF THE BLOOD. It possesses a marvelous efficacy in all complaints arising'from Indigestion, from Acidity of the Stom ach, from unequal circulation, determination of blood to the head, palpitation of the heart, cold feet and hand's, cold chills and hot flashes over the body. It has not its equal in Colds and Coughs; and promotes eapy expectoration and gentle perspi ration, relaxing strictures of the lungs, throat, and every other part. But in nothing is its excellence more manifestly seen ancL acknowledged than in all kinds and stages FEMALE CppaAINTS. It works -wonders incenses of Flour Albus or Whites, Failing of the Womb, Obstructed, Suppres sed, or Painful Menses, Irregularity of the mens trual periods, and the like, and it is effectual in curing all the forms of Kidney Disease. By removing obstructions, and regulating tho general system, it gives tone and strength to the whole body, and thus cures all forma of Nervous Diseases and Debility , and thus prevents or relieves a. great variety of other maladies, as Spinal Irrita tion, Neuralgia, St. Vitus’ Dance, Swooning, Ep ileptic Fits, Convulsions, &c. it cleanses the blood, excites the liver to healthy action, tones the stomach, and gives good diges tion, relieves the bowels of torpor and constipation, allays inflammation, purifies the skin, equalizes the circulation of the blood, producing gentle warmth equally over all parts of the body, and the insensi blc perspiration; relaxes-all. strictures and tight ness, removes all obstructions, and invigorates the entire nervous system. Is not this then the medi cine you pre-eminently need ? But can any of these things be said of S. P. Town send’s inferior article ? This young man’s liquid is notto be COMPARED WITH THE OLD DR’S, because of one Grand Fact, that the one is incapa ble of Deterioration, arid NEVER SPOILS, while the other does; souring, fermenting, and blowing the bottles containing it into, fragments ; the sour, acid liquid exploding, and damaging other goods ! Must not this horrible compound be pois onous to the system 7 What! put acid into a sys tem already diseased with* acid ? What causes Dyspepsia but acid ? Do we not all know tha when food sours in our stomachs, what mischief is produces? flatulence, heart-burn, palpitation of the heart, liver complaint, diarrhea, .dysentary, colic, and corruption of the blood ? What is Scrofula but an acid humor in the body 7 What produces all the humors which bring on Eruptions of the Skin, Scald Head, Salt Rheum, Erysipelas, White Swellings, Fever Sores, and all ulcerations internal and external 7 It is nothing under heaven but an acid substance, which sours, and thus spoils all the fluids of the body, more or less. What causes Rheumatism but a sour or acid fluid, which insinu ates itself between the joints and elsewhere, irrita ting and inflaming the delicate tissues upon which it acts 7 So of nervous diseases, of impurity of the blood, of deranged circulations, and nearly all the ailments which aft'ect human nature. • Now is it not horrible to make and sell, and infi nitely worse to use this Souring-, Fermenting, Acid Compound of S. P. Townsend , and yet he would fain have it understood that Old Dr. Jacob Townsend’s Genuine Original Sarsapa rilla, is an imitation of his inferior preparation. Heaven forbid that we should deal in an article which would bear the least resemblance to S. P. Townsend’s article; and which should bringdown upon the old Dr. such a mountain load of complain and criminations from Agents who have sold, and purchasers who have used S. P. Townsend’s Fer menting Compound. We wisfi it understood because it is the absolute truth, that S. P. Townsend’s article and old Dr. Jacob Townsend’s Sarsaparilla are heaven-wide apart, and infinitely dissimilar; that they are unlike in every particular having not one single thing in common. As S. P. Townsend is no doctor, and never was, is“no chemist, no pharmaceutist—knows no more of medicine or disease than any other common, unscientific, unprofessional man, what guarantee can the public have that they are receiving a genu ine scientific medicine, containing all the virtues of the articles used in preparing it, and which are incapable of changes which might render them the AGENTS df Disease instead of health. But what else should expected from one who knows nothing comparatively of medicine or dis ease ! It requires a person of some experience to cook and serve up even a common decent mesl. How much more important is it that the persons who manufacture medicines designed for Weak Stomachs and Enfeebled Systems should know well the medical properties of plants, the best manner of securing and concentrating their healing virtues, also an;extensive systepj ? and how to adapt remedies to these diseases ! It is horrible to think and to know how cruelly the afflicted are imposed upon by presumptuous men for the sake of money!
