Highly Important from the Gold Reglon---Letters to the Government. WAslir.vr:Tox, Jan. 21. The Union of this morning publishes letters tram Lieut. Larkin, received at the State Depart went, and dated Monterey, Nov. ltith. He states that the gold is increasing in size and quelity daily Lieut,:Larkin further states that he has examined several pieces of the precious metal weighing from one to two pounds each, and has heard of several lumps being found weighing sixteen pounds each, and of one lump that weighed twenty five pounds. Many men who were, comparatively speaking, beg gars last June, are now worth twenty thousand dollars, accumuloted by digging and trading with the Indians. One hundred dollars is considered an ordinary day's work. From July to October, nearly one half,of the diggers were sick with fevers, though' there had not been many deaths. The Indians trade an ounce of gold dust for a common calico shirt. Others sell it at ten, dollars per ounce for specie. The Gold region is known to extend three hundred miles, and the probability is that it extends to the distance of one thousand miles. A letter from Commodore Rules states that things are in a deplorable condition. .Anarchy prevails. Even his officers are disposed to desert for the gold 'regions. Several petty officers and seamen have already deserted his ship. He says that the Indians are selling gold dust at fifty cents per ounce. Additional California News---U. S Vessels Deserted ---Scarcity of Provisions BALTI E, Sunday night, Jan. 21 A number of vessels that have arrived lately have been deserted by captains, cooks and all hands. The captain of the ship Isaac Walton offered dis charged soldiers •fifty. dollars per month to go to Callao, but they refused to accept. The captain was finally supplied-by Government sailors. All the United States vessels at San Francisco and Monterey are short of hands. The U. S. ship of the line Ohio is one hundred and fifty hands short. and sailors continue to desert at every opportunisy. The populations of Oregon and the Sandwich Islands are rapidly pouring into California. Nearly all the soldiers, and some of the officers. of the Third Artillery, have deserted and set out for the gold regions. Provisions are very scarce, and almost any price is poid for theM in the currency of the country— gold dust. Board cannot. be obtained for less than four dol lord per day. Washing is six dollars per dozen. Merchant's clerks get from two to three thou sand dollars per annum. Singular Escape from Slavery. William and Ellen Craft, man and wife, lived with different masters in the State of Georgia.— • Ellen is so near white, that she can pass without suspicion for a white woman. Her husband is much darker., He is a mechanic, and by working nights and Sundays, he laid, up money enough to bring himself and his wife ut of slavery. Their plan was without precedent ; and though novel, was the means of getting them their freedom. Ellen dressed in man's clothing, and passed as the master, while her husband passed as the servant. In this way they travelledifrom Georgia to Phila. 41phia: - On their journey, they put up at the best hotels where they stopped. Neither of them can read or write. And Ellen, knowing that she would be called upon to write her name at the hotels, &c., tied her right hand up, as though it was lame, which proved at some service to her, as she was called upon several times at hotels to "register - her name. Dedication. We neglected last week to notice .the consecra tion of the new Church recently erected in this place by the Evangelical Lutheran Congregation under the pastoral charge of Rev. B. KELLER, which occurred on the :3 let ult., Rev. Messrs. UL RICH, of Petersburg, and SENTMAN,of`Taneytown, assisting in the exercises of that and the succeed ing day. It is a large, convenient, and beautiful edifice, and reflects credit upon the members of the Congregation through whose agency it has been erected.—Compiler. CALM/RNLI:AND Cetcvrr►.—The London Times in speaking of the lack of public spirit in Calcutta and Bombay, draws the following parallel : California was scarcely known a year back; Inn unless public opinion shall soon make itself heard, it will scarcely appear too much to predict that its chief port on the Pacific will be opened up by a line of railway from New York, and with a steam fleet to Canton, before the first locomotive will have started from either of the gigantic andlry_com paratively ancient cities of Calcutta or IV,: GOLD vs. Hoson.—lt is not exactly coriect, as has been stated, that Mr. Ten Eyck, U. S. Com missioner at the Sandwich Islands, has not been removed. It seems he has resigned and hurried off to the California "gold diggings, - preferring his chance there to an annual salary of $3,000. 11J COL. GORDON F. Meson, of Bradford county, is named in some of the Democratic papers as the next Democratic candidate for Canal Commissioner. He is at present a State Senator from the Bradford ditrict, and enjoys a good reputation for ability and practical experience. The next candidate is conceded to the North. • lns NvMßan.—The New York Herald has taken the trouble to gather theistatistics of the California emigration. It says that the whole number of em igrants who have left our ports thus far is 2.212, of which number 530 go by the way of Chagres. and 1682 via Cape Horn. EU - Louis Napoleon is unmarried. His cousi whose aristocratical title is the "Princess - Mat ilde Demidoff, is to do the honors of the Preside tial palace 1:17" The Washington Union contradicts the report that the government had received important official despatches from California, which it is withhold ing from the public eye. SENATOR vnost It.t.ixots.—Gen. Shields has been elected to the United States Senate by the Legisla ture of Illinois, in place of Mr. Breese, whose term expires on the 4th of March next. DEATHS. In this way it is so adjusted as to suit the motion of the body, and is always clean. and durable, which in the ordinary stuffed pads is not the case. Turnpike Dividend Wanted. Principal Office, 162 Nassau at., N. Y. OLD DR. JACOB TOWNSEND, THE ORIGINAL DISCOVERER OF THE Genuine Townsend Sarsaparilla. OLD DR. TOWNSEND is now about 70 years of age, and has long been known as the author and discoverer of the Genuine Original Townsend Sarsaparilla. Being poor, he was compelled to limit its manufacture, by, which means it has been kept out of market, and the sales circumscribed to those only who had proved its worth, and known its value. It had reached the ears of manyi never theless, as those persons who had been healed of sore diseases, and saved from death, proclaimed its excellence and wonderful HEALING POWER. Knowing, many years ago, that he had, by his skill, science and experience, devised an' article Miich would be of incalculable advantage to man kind when the means would be furnished to bring it into universal notice, when its inestimable virtues would he knoWn and appreciated. This time has come, the means are supplied ; this Grand and Unequalled Preparation is manufactured on, the lar gest scale, and is called for throughout the length and breadth of the land, especially as it is found incapable of degeneration or deterioration. Unlike young S. P.Townsendts, it improves with age, and never changes, but for the better; because it is prepared on scientific principles by a scientific man. The highest knowledge of Chemistry, and the latest discoveries of the art, have, all been -brought into requisition in the manufacture of the old Dr's Sarsaparilla. The Sarsaparilla, Root, is Well known to medical men contains many medical properties and some properties which are inert or useless, and others which it retained in preparing it for use, produce fermentation and acid, which is injurious to the system. Some of the properties of Sarsaparilla are so volatile, that they entirely evap orate and are lost in the preparation, if they are not preserved by a scientific progress, known only to. those experienced in its manufacture. Moreover, these volatile principles, which fly off in vapor, or as an exhalation, under heat, are the very essential medical properties of the root, which give to it all its value. Any person can boil or stew the toot till they get a dark colored liquid, which is more from the col oring 'natter in the rout than from anything else ; they can then strain this insipid or vapid liquid, sweeten with sour molasses, and then call it " Sar saparilla Extract or Syrup." But such is not the article known as the s GENUINE OLD DR. JACOB TOWNSEND'S SARSAPARILLA. This is so prepared, that all the inert properties of the Sarsaparilla root are first removed, every thing capable of becoming acid or of fermentation, is extracted or rejected; then every particle of medical virtue is secured in a pure and conce.itra ted form; and thus it is rendered incapable of los ing any of its valuable and healing properties. Pre pared in this way, it is made the most powerful agent in the CURE OF INNUMERABLE DISEASES. Hence the reason why we hear commendations on every side in its favor by men, women, and children. We find it doing wonders in the cure of Consumption, Dyspepsia, and Liver Complaint, and in Rheumatism, Scrofula, Piles, Costiveness, all Cutaneous Eruptions, Pimples, Blotches, and all affections arising from IMPURITY OF THE BLOOD. , . It possesses a marvelous efficacy in all complaints arising from Indigestion, from Acidity of the Stom ach, from unequal circulation, determination of blood to the'head, palpitation of the heart, cold feet and bands, cold chills and hot flashes over the body. It has not its equal in Colds and Coughs; and promotes easy expectoration and gentle perspi ration, relaxing strictures of the lungs, throat, and every other part. But in nothing is its excellence more manifestly seen and acknowledged than in all kinds and stages of FEMALE COMPLAINTS. It works wonders in cases of Flour Allies or Whites, Falling of the Womb, Obstructed;Siippres sed, or Painful Menses, Irregularity of the mens trual periods, and the like, and it is effectual dii curing all the forms of Kidney Disease. By removing obstructions, and regulating the general system, it gives tone and - strength to the whole body, and thus cures all forms of Nervous Diseases and Debility, and thus prevents or relieves a great variety of other maladies, as Spinal Irrita tion, Neuralgia, St. Vitus' Dance, Swooning, Ep ileptic Fits, Convulsions, &c. It cleanses the blood, excites the liver to healthy action, tones the stomach, and gives good diges lion, relieies the bowels of torpor and'constipation, I allays inflammation, purifies the skin, equalizes the circulation of the blood, producing gentle warmth equally over all parts of the body . , and the itisensi ble perspiration ; relaxes all strictures and tight ness, renictims all obstructions, and invigorates the entire nervous system. Is not this then the ineih tine you pre-eminently need ? But can any of these things be said of S'. P. Town seed's inferior article This young man's liquid is not to be COMPARED WITH THE OLD DR'S, becauee of one Grand Fact, that the one ie incapa ble of Deterioration, and NEVER SPOILS, . . while the tither does; souring, fermenting, and blowing the bottles containing it into fragments; the sour, acid liquid exploding, and damaging othei goods ! Must not this horrible compound be pois onous to the system.?, What! put acid into a sys tem already diseased with acid? What causes Dyspepsia but acid'? Do we not all know that when food sours in our stomachs, what mischief' it produces? flatulence, heart-burn, palpitation of the heart, liver co diarrhea., dysentery, colic, and corrupti blood ? What is SCrofula but an acid.; the body 9 What produces all the humo 1611 bring on Eruptions of the Skin, Scald tread, Salt Rheum, Erysipelas, White Swellings, Fever Sores, and all ulcerations internal and external ? It is nothing under heaven but- an acid substance, which sours, and thus spoils all the fluids of the body, more or less. What causes Rheumatism but a sour or arid fluid, which Ifls4lU ates itself between the joints and elsewhere, irrita ting and inflaming the delicate tissues upon which it acts ? So of nervous diseases, of impurity of the blood, of deranged circulations, and nearly all the ailments which affect human nature. Now is it not horrible to make and sell, and infi nitely worse to use this Souring, Fermenting, Acid Compound of S. P. Townsend, and yet lie would fain have it understood that Old Dr. Jacob Townsend's Genuine Original Sarsapa rilla, is an imitation of his inferior preparation. Heaven forbid that we should deal in an article which would bear the least resemblance to S. P. Townsend's article; and which should bring down upon the old Dr. such a mountain load of complaint and criminations from Agents who have sold, and purchasers who have used S. P. Townsend's Fer menting Compound. We wish it understood because it is the absolute truth ' that S. P. Townsend's article and old . Dr. Jacob Townsend's Sarsaparilla are heaven-wide ;apart, and infinicely dissimilar; that they are 'unlike in every particular having not one single thing in common. As S: P. Townsend is no doctor, and never was, is no chemist, no pharmaceutist—knows no more of medicine or disease than any other common,. unscientific, unprofessional man, what guarantee can the public have that they are receiving a genu ine scientific medicine,. containing all the virtues of the articles used in preparing it, and which are incapable of changes which might render them the • AGENTS of Disease instead of health. But what else- should be expected from one who knows nothing comparatively of medicine or dis ease ! It requires a person of some experience to cook and serve up even a common decent meal. How much more important is it that the persons who manufacture medicines designed for Weak Stomachs and Enfeebled Systems should know well the medical properties of plants, the best manner of securing and concentrating their healing virtues, also an'extensive system, and how to adapt remedies to these diseases! - It is horrible to think and to know -how quelly the afflicted are imposed upon by presumptuous men for the sake of money ! Fortunes made out of the agonies of the sick! and no equivalent rendered the despairing sufferers ! For sale by • J. GISH & BRO., Agents. ly-50 Jan 9 49 Why will you Suffer?
