Hew a Monitor Snake Was nagged la Seuth America. A writer in the New Yerk Ltdgtr anya: While travelling In Seuth America I experienced many adventures, one of which wus particularly hazardous. The sun had Just passed the meridian in a cloudless sky; there waa scarcely a bird te be Boen, for the winged inhabitants of the forest, ovcrcemo by heat, had retired te the thtckcKt nliAdca: all would bave been like midnight ailence were it net that the shrill veice of the plpl-ye every new and then resounded from a distant tree. I was sitting with a "Herace" In my hand, when a negre with hla little deg came down the hill in liaste, and informed me that a snake had been discovered, and that It was a young one called the bush master, a rare and poisonous breed. I In stantly rose up, and laying held of an eight-feet lance which was close by me, started te have a leek at the monster. I was barefoot, with en old hat and check shirt and trousers en, and a pair of braces te keep theni up. The negre had his cut lass, and we ascended the hill ; another negre, armed with a cutlass, joined us, judging from our pace that there was some thing te de. The little deg came along with us, and when we get about half a mile in the forest, the negre stepped, and pointed te a fallen tree: all was still and silent. I told the negre net te stir from the place whure they were, and te keep the little deg in, and that I would go en and reconnoiter. I advnnced up te the place slowly and cautiously. At last I mnde the snake out ; it was net poisonous, but large enough te have crushed any of us te death. On ascertaining the size of the serpent, I retired slowly the way I came, and prom prem ised four dollars te the negre, who had shown it te me, and one te the ether who had Joined us. Aware that the day was en the decline, and that the approach of night would be detrimental te the dis section, I thought that I would take it alive. I imagined, if I could strike it with the lance behind the head, and pin him te the ground, I might succeed in capturing him. When I told tills te the ncgroes, they begged and entreated me te let them go for a gun and bring mere force, a they were sure the snake would kill some of us; but I had been in search of a large sorpent for years, and new having come up with one. it did net beceme me te turn soil. Se, taking a cutlaRS from ene of the negrees, and tlien ranging both the sable slaves be hind me, I told them te fellow me and that I would cut them down if they of fered te lly. When we get up te the place, the serpent had net stirred. I could see nothing of Its bead, And I judged by the folds of its body that It must be at the furtheat side of his den. A species of woedbino had formed a cemplete mantel ever the branches of the fallen tree, almost Impervious te the rain or the rays of the sun. Prebibly the snake had reserted te tills sonuesterod pluue for a leugth of tlme, as it bore the marks of un ancient settlement. I new took my knife, determining te cut away the woedbino, and break the twigs in the gentlest manner pessible, till I could get a view of ills head. One negre steed guard close behind me with the lance and near hi in the ether witli a cutlass. The cutlass which I had taken from the first ungre was en the ground close by me in ense of need. After working in dead silence fera quar ter of an hour, with ene knee all the tlme en the ground, I had cleared away enough te sea his head. It appeared coming out between the llrst and second coil of his body, and was flat en the ground. This was the very position I wished it te be in. I rese in sllence. and retreated very slowly, making a sign te the negrees te de the same. We were at this time about twenty yards from the snake's den. I new ranged tbe ncgroes behind me, nml told him who steed next te me te lay held of the lance tbe moment I struck the snake, and that the ether limit attend my movements. It new only remained te take their cutlasses from them, for I was sure If I did net dis arm them, they would be tempted te strike the snake in time of danger, and thus for ever spoil his skin. On taking their cut cut lasses from them, if 1 might Judge from their physiognomy, they seemed te con sider it as a most Intolerable act of tyranny en my part. 1'rebably nothing kept them from belting but the consolation that I was te be between them and tbe snake. We went slowly en In silence, without moving our arms or beads, In order te pre vent alarm as much as pessible, lest the snake should glidoelf or attack us in mlf mlf defense. I carried the" lance perpendicu larly before me, witli the point about a feet from the ground. The snake had net moved; and, en getting up te him, I struck him with the lance en the near side, just behind the neck, and pinned him te the ground. That moment the negre next te me seized the lance and held it II rm in its place, whlle I dashed head foremost into the den te grapple with the snake, and te get held of its tail before it could de any mischief. On belng pinned te the ground with the liitien, it gave n tremendous loud hiss, and the llttle deg ran a.vay, howling. We had a sharp fray In the den, the rotten sticks llylug en all sides, and each party struggling for superiority. The second negre threw himself upon me, as I found I was net heavy enough, and the additional weight was or great service. I had new get a firm held of the tail, and, after a violent struggle or two, the snake gave in. Whlle the first negre continued te held the lance firm te the ground, and the ether was helping me, I contrived te unloose my braces, and with them tied up the snake's mouth. We contrived te make his snakeshlp twist round the shall of the lance, nml then prepared te convey it out of the forest. I steed at its head, and held it firmly under my arm, ene negre support ing tne ueuy, ana tue niuer me inn. in this erder we began te meve slowly toward home, and reached it after restiuir every ten minutes, for the snake was tee heavy ' for us te support it without stepping te re cruit our strength. As we nroceoded on ward with It, It feucht hard for freedom, but It was all in vain. The day was new tee far spent te think of dissecting It. Had I killed it, n partial putrefaction would have taken place befere morning. I had brought with me into the forest a strong bag, large enough te contain any animal I should want todissect. I considered this the host mode of keeplng alive wild animals when was pressed for daylight, for the bag, yielding in every direction te their efferts, they would have nothing solid or fixed te work en, and thus would be prevented frnm making a hole through it. I say fixed, for after the mouth of the bag was closed, the bag itself was net fastened or tied te anything, but moved about Wherever the animal inside caused it te roll. After securing afresh the mouth of the monster, It was forced into this bag, and lett te its fate till morning. I cannot bay it allowed me te have a quiet night. My hammock was In the loll lust above him, and the fleer between us half geno te decay, se that In parts of it un beards Intervened between bis lodging and mine. He was very restless and fretful ; and had Medusa been my wife, there could net have been mero continued and disa greeable hissing in the bed-chamber that night. At daybreak I sent te borrow ten of the negrees who were cutting weed at a distance, as I judged it most nrudent te have a geed force, In casejie. should trv te escape from the heuse when we opened the bag. However, nothing serious occurred. We untied the bag, kept him down by main force, and then I cut Ills threat. He bled like an ex. Ily six o'clock the same evening he was completely dissected. On measuring him afterward, he was round te be something mere than fourteen feet jtPf. A verv funny riant In the trevernment botanical garden is the se-called Batter plant, the leaves of which are used In some pans 01 me can dt mooing en tea face te keep the beard from growing. It Is net supposed te have any effect en a beard that Is already rooted, tint merely te act as a preventive, bevs employing It te keep the hair from Retting a start en their face. It la also employed by some Oriental people who desire te keep parts of their beads free from hair, as a matter of fashion. Alse found In the botanical garden Is the "cruel plant,' which Is se designated be cause It catches butterflies and kills them ter sheer sport. Its flowers attract the peer little flutterer by the honey It offers, and when the victim lights upon It It grabs the butterfly by the head and holds It last until the captive dies. Then the flower drops It en the ground and lies In wait for a fresh unfortunate. A curious looking tree from the Isthmus of Panama bears a round red fruit as big as an apple, which has this remarksble faculty, that IU julee, rubbed en tough beef or chicken, makes the meat tender by the chemical power it possesses te separata the flesh fibre. One is Interested te observe In the botanical greenhouse three kinds of plants that ave real consumption of the lungs the leaves, of course, being the lungs of a plant. The disease Is manifested by the turning of the leaves from green te white, the affec tion gradually spreading from ene spot until, when a leaf Is all white, It Is just about te die. Cruelly enough, as It would seem, the gardeners only try te perpetuate the disease for the sake of beauty and curiosity, all plants of thesa varieties that are tee healthy being thrown away. A DInmend-aet Teeth. Frem the St. Paul Ploneer-Press. Seme tlme age a New Yerk paper told a story that a dentist bad Inserted a diamond in the teeth of a sprightly actress, with which she dazzled the dudes who nightly preempted the first rows of orchestra chairs. It remained for a St. Paul dentist. Dr. Ellis, te actually accomplish this feat. A short tlme age a lady with a badly decayed upper lateral incisor entered his office, and, after examination, the doctor informed her that the only means of saving the teeth would be te substitute a geld crown. In a joking way he referred te the diamond story, and laughingly suggested that thore was an excellent opportunity te try the ex periment In her case. Te his surprise his patient, who proved te be an actress, as sented. Dr. Kills procured a small-sized brilliant, and embedded It In the geld crown which he built en the remains of tbe natural predecessor. The actress is delighted with the result, and declares that the next gem inserted shall be a carat in weight. The stone is net conspicuous, and might escape netice altogether, although a ray of artificial light makes it sparkle in a way likely te arouse curiosity. The actress is the nearest actual approach te tbe little girl in the fairy story from whose mouth gems dropped when ever she spoke. It is hardly probable that any such fashion will become general, although an inspection of the jewelled In cisor shows that tbe effect Is far less startling than would be expected. A Silver Fleer. Frem the New Yerk Star, Silver floors are properly supposed te exist only in the Imagination of the authors of "The Arabian Nights," or of poets whose descriptions are somewhat exaggerated. Hut, going the ether day into the otllee of Handy it Harman, dealers in bullion, in Nassau street, I found tbe fleer of the room neatly paved with seme hundreds of slabs of the shining white metal, each of them about the size and shape of an ordinary brick. Mr. Parker Handy of the firm In formed me that thev were assay bars that is te say, silver that had passed through the United States Assay Ofllce and received the Government stamp testifying te their belng of the standard fineness and contain ing each u certain weigbt of the precieus metal. He tells me that It Is no unusual thing for the leading bullion heuses here te handle in ene day hundreds of thousands of euuees of silver. Just for the sake of the experience, I toel: a short walk up and down this silver pavement, but I cannot any that, outside of Its appearance and the narne of the thing, the high-priced material possesses uuy advantages evor the style of JKivement patronized by tte department of public works.
