Ha died suddenly of heart disease wlAenta moment's warning at about 4 o'clock en Saturday afternoon. He was In the Balti more A rotemsn railway station, within 100 feet of the silver star that msrks the stwt where OarfleldTell when struck by Qlteau'a bullet, when he expired. He seemed te walk with an effort and te breathe with labor, but these symp toms were the usual eoempanlmenta of exertion with him for some mouths past. After passing Inte the station they were joined by his private secretary. A few words were exchanged with regard te the care of baggage, when the senator placed his hand te his head, saying, " I am se dirty," anil foil Inte the arms of his com-' I anions. Mrs. Qoedloo was se overcome hat she, tee, fell upon the platform. The senator was 'srrled te the superintendent's room and dletl before a physician could reach him. Ten minutes later the sad news was conveyed te the Senate chamber. Ills colleagues were greatly shocked and an adjournment was at once taken. Sen iter Beck's friends were ueh greatly surprised at bia sudden death. Kver since he was attacked with heart disease mero than a year age they have realized that he would never be himself again. He has appeared in the Senate chamber occa sionally, but only te remain a few uio uie uio ments, and without taking any part In the debates. Many of Mr. Beck's friends In Kentucky, realizing that he never would regain his health and strength, endeavored te per suade him te resign, se that the matter of successor might be arranged. He felt that if be should resign his scat In the Senate the last link that bound him te the affairs of the world would be broken, and that, having nothing te llve for, he would mere easily give up the battle. He broke down while engaged in the fall of 1883 in fighting the tariff Dill of the finance committee that was before the Senate during all the cam paign until within n few days before the election. The preparation of the minority report en that bill was the lest great work performed by Senater Beck. In the few times that Mr. Beck has visited the Senate chamber during the pest year his cel- loagues have noted with sorrow hew greatly his once powerful frame had shrunk, and hew feeble his step bad be come. He maintained te the last, bow ever, his ruddy countenance. Since the death of bis wlfe.abeut feu r years Htre. Senater Beck has made his home with his daughter, whose husband Is stationed iu New Yerk. The senator's son is a wealthy and prosperous ranchman in Mentana, and has been iu Washington but seldom in re cent years. Democrats of all shades of opinion ex- ress the deepest sorrow end regret at Mr. ;eck's death. Personally he was beloved by every man who knew 111 in, and as a loyal fighting Democrat he had but few equals. Since his death en Saturday after noon there has been universal comment of the fact that the two men in public life In Washington mero nearly nlike in all the qualities of true Democracy honesty, statesmanship, shrowdness and ability were James II. Beck and Samuel J. ltan dall. Wliat llandall was te the Heuse Beck was te the Senate. Finance and the tariff were the two subjects upon which Senater Beck was most at home, but en every subject that ever came before the Senate be was always prepared te act and speaK. no uiu net nave an enemy en either slde of the Senate chamber, and soine of his most intimate friends were these senators en the Republican side with whom be most eften crossed swords. Senators Allisen, Sherman, Aldrich, His cock, Merrill and Jenes, bis Republican colleagues en the flnance committee had great aumiraiien ler ins i&ienis, siuruy enesty and warm -hearted geed nature. Ills fund of anecdote was inexhaustlble and talking came aa easy te him as swim ming te a duck.' Indued, It was often said by publle men that the two Kentucky senators could de mero talking In a given tlme than any flx women in the United Stales, senator jieck ievcu uerses ana dogs, and was a well known ilgure en the nuarter-stretch whenover the Kentucky horses were exhibiting their powers of speed. Beuaiar eiiummu was uiuuu iiiuvuu wiiuii a reporter informed him of the sad fact. He said he had sorved for a long time with Sonater Beck en the flnance committee, and hed formed a high opinion of bis abili ties. " He was," said Sherman, " a man of strong opinions, vigorous intellect and positive convictions. He was honest and conscientious, and very stubborn. He was i a geed senater, well equipped with a great variety ei arguments, -wuue weuinaKrecu ' in nearly all our opinions en political questions, I had a slucore respect for his uencsiy ami iiituy mm uem uxpruiunuus of opinion. He was a "very useful man, and his death will be greatly regretted by all." Senater James Bumle Beck, of Ken- tuck, was born in Dumfriesshire, Scotland, en February 13, 1821, lie came te the United Stales with his father, a hardwork ing Scotch farmer, seme twenty-two years later and settled In Lexington, Ky., in 1840. He had a fair academic education, an abundance of hard Scotch sense, and an iron constitution. He was penniless, but determined te get enough money together te pay his way through a geed law school. He applied te Drummond Hunt, a gen tleman farmer In Fuyotte county, for a Jeb. Mr. Hunt made him overseor of his farm. Yeung Beck breke tlax, sheared sheep, and mewed grass mero skillfully and rapidly than any ether mau en the farm. Kven lucs he read books from Mr. Hunt's library and from the office of a neighboring law yer. He saved his wages v itu the strictest parsimony, and at the end of the year re signed his job te begin his studies at the Transylvania University Law school. Alter UIS grauuauen ue epeneu an uiuuu In Lexington. His speaking In court was se painfully bad that he was a butt or riai cnle for alf the young lawyers of the city. Ills first partners were Ben Graves and Sam Shy, the son of a professional cock- nguier. .sir. uuck leu me una sneriiy i enter into a partnership with Jehn C. Breckenrldge, who had lust moved his office from Georgetown te Lexington. Mr. Breckenrldge was ramous ter his oratory, but had a small reputation as a lawyer. He did the talking for the new firm, and Mr. Beck devoted himself te the hard legal routine of the ofllce. While in partner ship with Mr. Breckenrldge Mr. Beck married iuisk -mormen, a siep-aaugmorer Gen. Clark, of Irginia, and a collateral descendant of Geerge Washington. With Miss Thornten Mr. Beck get a dowry of 30,00e. He lnvosted the money in Northwestern land, from which be made enormous profits. The firm of Beck Breckinridge existed In name and fact till the breaking out of the rebellion. Mr. Breckinridge, then vice president, de cided te cast tils let with the Confederacy. He was accompanied te Georgetown by Mr. Beck, wiicnce both were driven In a carriage witn mau speeu 10 menmenu. There Mr. Beck left Mr. Breckinridge te return te his Lexington office. He worked Industriously at his practice throughout the war, and conducted himself from the beginning te the end of hostilities circum spectly and like a law-abiding citizen of the United States. Jn ISM he was elected te Congress. He served four successive terms until 1875. In 1870 he was elocted te the United States Senate, and was ap pointed inemhernf the commission te de fine the Maryland-Virginia boundary. He took his seat in the Senate en March 4, 1877, and retained It until his death. Dur ing his congressional life Senater Beck served en many Important committees, and took a prominent part In many nota ble debates. If Tew Urn eealnesi Test OfltaexleteeWty U '!
