LANCASTER, PA., January 28, 1890. -.... Astatic Items. An intestinal disease of cxccsslve fatality has made its appearances In iMtemFenin nnd dlspntcbw from St. , Petersburg express fear that it may be th cholera, though In the absence of doctor nothing can be learned. If the epidemic Is really cholera It will be very difficult te prevent it from passing ever the mountains Inte the narrow strip of land between Persia and thodcscrt.whcre the famous trans-Caspian railway lias been built by the Russians. It would Ikj easy te check it there by rigid quarantine at the Caspian cud of the line and te the east of Bekhara, for It could net spread rapidly ever the desert te the northeast. The croakers who always make a great deal of nolse ever calamity that may be coming, have had se much te soy about cholera following the grip that very little slcknesfameng Asiatics Is likely te be magnified by the nervous dread of a terrible epidemic from that di rection. The manner of life there is se well suited te the development of epi demics that they are te be expected at any time, and it has been feared that Busslan railway building would make their spread toether countries perilously easy. Russia has broken through the harrier of desert that surrounded these lands and it remains te be seen whether she will be able te guard the passage. It will be time te feel some llttle alarm for Eastern Europe when reliable news comes te the effect that the cholera is really en the railroad line ready for shipment, but even then there will be strong hopes of stepping it. Fer the present we have quite enough te de lu attending te the grip and Its deadly fol lowers, and there Is neither sense nor profit in worrying about the rumored Intestinal troubles of the pcople of Per sian Kherassan. A mere pleasant item from Asia, by way of St. Petersburg, Is the announce ment that the government has decided te build a railway at ence from Lake Baikal te Stretiusk, en the frontier of China. This needs explanation in de tail, as that link of the proposed great transcontinental railway would be of little value without western conucctleu, but the story indicates that the time Is Jat approaching when It may be possi ble for a Nellie Bly te travel by rail across Europe and Asia from the At lantic te the Paciilc. Jlyo and bye there will surely lw rails te Alaska und a fast line of steamers en Bchrlug'ssca,se that people who want te avoid storms and sea sickness cau travel te Europe with only a few hours en the water. What Cambria Shows. Cambria county, which contains Jehns. town and wUcrclu It may be assumed that Adjutant General Hastings litut many mere friends than Senater Dela mater, has nevertheless in its Repub llcau convention nearly unanimously declared for Delamntcr for governor. This is net a natural result and It Is evident that it is the expression net of the Republican people but of the politi cians. It Is nevertheless significant of the final result of the struggle for the Republican nomination for governor, which is made net by the peo ple but by the politicians ; und It Is mere interesting te knew what they huve te say thau what the Republican voters thluk. It may be different when the electleu day comes around. Then the voters will be of soine consequence. It may be safely assumed that Sena "ter Dclamater will be the Republican nominee, since it is made clear that he is set up by the Republican machine. All the working politicians, animated by the knewledge that Senater Quay is the source of reward for party services, are tumbling in for Delamater, who in Quay's man. It is doubtful whether General Hastings will have grit enough te keep up the fight in face of the in evitable result ; and we expect te mk him retire from the field rather than wait te be carried from it with his mar tial cloak around him. It would be wise for him perhaps w stay in tne llgnt and te take his wounds, In the knowledge that he will gain popular sympathy in the gallant and unequal struggle. It is, moreover, net probable that such politics as forces a candidate upon the party by the ob vious wires of the party machinery will have enduriug vitality, ami that there are likely te be early fatalities among the men who move them. The Democratic party would net stand such nonsense a day, and though the Republican voters have shown that they have net easily overturned stomachs, it is likely that they can be given a dose which will be tee mueh for them ; nnd one would think this dose of Delainutcr weuiu be strong enough te threaten such an effect. The nomination will suit the Democratic party. It will lw about equivalent te the nomination of Quay himself a few years age, and it is probably the recollection of the hiiccess of that nomination which luvifes this one. But there is such n thing as taking ft bucket te the well ence tee often. And It may be that It will net always be n successful policy In the Republican party ,even In Houusylvanle.to nominate for state office the most muladoreus men In It. Pigeon Sheeting. Judge Yerkes, In Bucks county, has made a notable construction of the law forbidding cruelty te animals, under which he lias caused te be convicted a member of a pigeon shoetlngclub. The Judge finds that the iutllctlen of un necessary pain upon animals is such cruelty as the law ferblihs ; und he thinks that the sheeting of pigeons for the pur pose of developing skill in the umj of the shut gun is unnecessary, aud that the wounding of pigeons in the per formance is cruelty. We undci-stuud that the Judge is net clear that the kill Ing of them is cruel, since of the pain tteu suffered the pigeon Is perhaps uu uu uu conscieus j but as all the pigeons ure net killed outright, mid the weuudwl survive uutll they cuu get the caup de grace front Jho sportsmen or their attendants, there is syffering caused te the birds aud consequently lawless cnicliy is prac tlsed. Tills decision is te be taken te the supreme court, where it Is likely te be , reformed by the considera tion that Judge Ycrkcs' views would put a summary end tothe sports of the chase ; which arc undertaken for the sake of the sport and net for the sake of feed. It may be true that this sport Is a cruelty te the objects of it, as it certainly causes them suffering, but It is clear enough that the Legislature did net Intend te prohibit It, in enacting the law against cruelly te ani mals, since it has carefully defined the seasons of the year during which the sheeting of game may be practiced. The judge's views upon pigeon sheeting apply equally as well te deer and quail and rabbit sheeting, and the weakness of his law scenip te lw (shown by the clear fact that such sport is lawful. iia s Practical Interpretation. A corrcsendcnt asks us point out the " article, section nnd clause of the con stitution " warranting the imposition of protective duties ; te which we say that no such reference Is necessary lu view of the fact that the loglslaturcef the cenn, try has nlwayslmM)scd such duties ;nud as their unconstitutionality has net yet Itcen declared by the courts, we deem It safe te nssume that It never will be. AVe arc net of these who think It wlse te fight windmills, nnd we ate content with the practical solution which has liecn made of the constitu tionality of protcctlve duties by the country's steady use of them. He found thai the lotter te the secretary had net told half of the terrible state or atl'.ilrs which h.w ubtnined lu the ill tie Viilley. About a year age there appeared auieni; the jioeplo of that neigliborheiid a man named Kilas Wilcox, who went about the country preachlug the doctrlne or deinir Keed for the sick. It was net long until he bad a sufficient number of adherents te hisdoctrlnes te warrant him In attempt ing te found a sect, which lis named the Samaritans. Among the teachings he ad vocated was the drinking of bleed for alt dlseases. , He said that the lilble taught thai bleed was life. Almest dally pilgrim ages were maile by theso who were ailing te the packing houses, and thcre they drank the bleed of tne freshly killed beeves. Wilcox was net satisfied, however, with the bleed of nnlinals, and he advnncsd the doctrine that It was well te show belief In the doctrine by giving up human bleed for the sick nnu suffering mombers of the band. This doctrlne wns gradually es tablished, Wilcox himself being the first te profit by the horrible practice. He ap parently became very sick and was unable te make the pilgrimage te the packing house. He called upon the faithful mem mem mom eors of the baud tos.ive his life. A woman named Nancy Dixen was pernunded te allow the preacher te suck bleed from her arm. The effect was marvelleus, for Wil cox recovered from his allcged Illness the ssme day. This vlslble manifestation of the truth of his doclrines made a great Im pression en his followers, and the result lias been that from that day the habit has steadily increascd nnd Is new a regular practice among the Samaritans. At the home of Jehn Wrinkle, men tioned lu the letter, woie found two omsel emsel nted children. On the bed lay Wrinkle, apparently In the last stages of consump tion. When questioned about drinking the bleed of the chlldreu he denied having done se. The children also deuWxl It. The bloodless appoarance, howevor, ex cited the suspicion of the elllcer and he compelled them te show thelr arms. They w. re covered with scars around the elbows. When confrentol with this evidence Wiiukle acknowledged IhaLhe had availed himself of the opportunity aud the chii dieu had willingly given their bleed te re re ro stero him te health. The man was In such n condition that he could net be removed, but the children were taken lu charge by the officer, nnd Slaced in the Children's Heme. Chlof eers Is anxious te take steps, te put a step te the practice, but thcre appears te be no law which applies te the oase except wliere chlldreu are made use of te supply the bleed. The band of Samaritans Is composed of about twenty members, who held regular weekly nicetlngs at t he heuses of the differ ent members. At theso meetings the sick or ailing ask for assistance from the well, and tliey are detnlled te give thelr bleed according te their health aud strength. When n uioniber becomes very sick the well ones take turns in supplying him with the life giving lluld. They claim that they have a right te de this when tlin bleed is a voluntary contribution, the same as physicians have the right te trousfuse bhed from ene person te another.
