Jehn Ready was ledged In the Lancaster oeonty prison en Saturday night en charge of bone teallng and larceny. He wan an wpleye of Tlie. Slack, a farmer, living la tjoney tewnanip. Domeuygueujr M given horse by Mr. Stack te bring a baggy te the farm. lie was also given the charge of two mate te take te a man who -wanted te purchase them from Mr. Stacks. Ready betrayed the trust repesed In him and appropriated the horse and mules te his own use. He hurriedly went te liar rMmrg and there he traded the mules en a horse. This horse he sold for tlCO, and re ceived In payment a note which lie had discounted. The home he stele from Mr. Stacks he took, te the neighborhood of Pal myra, Lebanon county, where he disposed of It for cash. Ready had a geed time for a few days, bat his money was boeh geno and he then returned te the Stacks farm. His wife was also employed there, and It wen te see her and Induce her te go away with him Hint he risked returning te the sccne eflils crime. He was seen loitering nbeut the farm and Constable Burkunlder was notified. He . waited until he had lnformntlen of the exact whereabouts of neady. When he learned that the thief was accreted undr the hay In the barn he went after him and arrested him. Heady was greatly surprised that his biding place had been discovered. He said he bad made arrangements te go away from the neighborhood en Saturday night. When lie was searched only ui cents were In his pockets. The supposition Is that he has socrcied some of the money received for the herse and mules and In tended using It te travel te the West. Ready was brought te Lancaster en Satur day evening's train, and talcen befere Al derman Halbacli and committed for n hear ing. It Is probnble that he had accom plices In disposing of the stolen property. P. II. Seltrcr and C. II. Eby nre the men In Harrlsburg te whom he traded the mules for e horse. These parties then sold the mules te a street car company and Mr. Stacks will Issue a writ of replevin for them. Complaints have been made at Harrlsburg against Soltzer and Eby for larceny and receiving stolen goods. The case have been returned te court nnd will be tried en Wednesday. Ready is a man nbeut 30 years old, and went te Mr. Stacks te work several months age. Ills home la at Palmyra, Lebanon county, and he has well-to-de relatives there. Mr. Stacks will tnke steps te recover his herse sold by lleady In Lebanon county. Ready was given a hearing at neon to day. He admitted his guilt at the alder 'man's offleo and In default of $1,000 ball was committed for trial at the quarter ses sions court, beginning next Monday. Tbe charges against Heady are herse stealing and larceny, and the pecu liarities of tbe Ian are shown In these case. Fer stealing the tnare of Mr. Stacks, the offense Is horse stenling ; but for steal ing mules the ofTen-jo Is ordinary larceny. Inthlscose tbe mules stolen were valued ut three times as much as the mare, yet the punishment for herse stealing Is much mere severe than for lnrceny. A FLINT MILL VICTIM. William D. DUubtreu rrrcet of tbe Open Wluturcm tbe Anthracite Coel Traile. It Is a strnnge fact that 20,000 hard coal miners lu the anthracite basin, neaily half of whom are new Idle, should be study ing climatic changes and wondering whether cold weather has forevor disap peared for this latitude, Instead of being ut workmlnlngceal.Wnrinwoathorcontlnuoi, the miners keep Idle, nnd the reports come up from tldowater that there Is enough cenl tbere te last a year If thore Is no mero cold weather. A feeling of gloom porvnde the entlre roglen. It is known that the cenl companies have been rushing coal te mnr mnr ket nt a surprising rate, and that stocks en hand amount te several hundred thousand tens, enough and te ttpare should n sudden and lengthy Btege of cold woather set In. But Instead of cold weather, dandelions nre blooming in the meadows, nngle worms are as bear the surface ns ever, grain Is growing, grass Is greenlng, and there Is only en ordinary spring consumption of coal. A long period of idleness, therefore, appears te be ahead for the anthracite coal miners. A well authenticated repert prevnlls nt the coal mines that Mr. Cerbfn has been rushing coal te mnrket for n speclnl pur pose, und that he Intends cutting prices right nnd left. Uy underbidding the Le high A'alley Railroad company he sun sun sun coedod In getting the contract te furnish the Mnnhnttnn HTevnted supply ofSeO.OOO tens for the coming year, nnd It Is said that ether large contracts will be secured Inn slinllnr manner, thus forcing a market, and kceplng the few collieries running by soil ing coal nt a bare mnrgln, In order te keep tiie rolling stock of the Reading Railroad company moving. The iron trade continues very active, and thore is consldcrnble sale, therefore, for the larger sizes of anthracite cenl, but this has no effect en the smaller or domestic hIzes. All the coal companies hnve shut oil' con siderable In their coal shipments, und for tbe first llve days this year the falling off was about 110,000 tone, lis compared with the shipments of 1889 for the same period of days. In the meantime wholcsale prices are being cut nt tldowater, and It Is proba ble that the next nllettment of miners' wages will be far below the regular basis. Vlsltud by Mnsked Itohber.
