The work of cleaning the east roservelr of mud Is net as smalt a contract ns many supposed and It is net yet finished by any means. The work of removing the mud was concluded te-day, but the whole inslde will have te be swept and scrubbed yet. The place was well worth a visit whlle the mud was being taken out. On the north side of the reservoir a stairway was constructed, the steps or which led from the top or Iho bank lothe bottom of the basin. The mud was all scraped or hauled te the bottom or this stairway, and then placed in buckets. On each step of the stairway steed n man and they get the mud te the top by pass ing the buckets from one te another. The mud was then placed In n long schute through which it was inn down the bank intoaplace inade te receive It. The funniest part of the work was that dene by about fifteen boys, whose nges range from 12 te 1G years. Each ene of these steed behind the bucket men In a tow, and as the buckets wero emptied they pascd them back te the bottom et the res res res orvelr. The place where the boys Meed was rather slippery, and at times it was difficult rer them te retain their foethoUI. The work they did was anything but pleasant, but It Is likely that a dirtier let or boys were nevcr borero scen together. They seemed te enjoy making themselves leek badly, and when they thought mud was net coming sufficiently fust they would threw It upon each ether by the handful, or slide tle-n the dirt walled embankment. Their clothing, hats and even thlrhalr was full of mud, yet nil scorned te enjoy themselves hugely. Hew they will ever become clean again no ene knows. Ever slnce the work was begun It has icqulred the combined etfbrts of Superintendent Fralley, his em em peoyes and n pollce officer te prevent thorn from crawling Inte the fountain te wash and thus step it up. When the backsoftlicse nien were turned, lien over.seuio of the boys managed te get into the fountain, whern they looked like mud catfish. They cev ored the two pretty stairways at cither end of the reservoir with mud by crawling up and down them and they will have te be washed. Iho boys iccelve 80 cents per day for the work and when It is finished they will be flush.
