Ob the llth of November, 1887, at 0 a. m., the Germanic, after a terribly rough peerage of nine day, entered the magnificent harbor of New Yerk. The tun had riten resplend ent in a cloudlet blue ky. We had Just pasted BartheldTs statue of "Liberty En lightening the World," and, it seemed as if France were net far off. It was a sweet sen aatlen, and instinctively I had raised my hat. All at once the Germanle stepped." A little steam tug drew up alongside, and there stepped en beard a few custom beuse officers, followed by several ether persons. 1 , """""""" 4"pBweneasfa se " a "leek out!" cried one of my fellow passen gars, seeing that I oppeared.to.be unconscious of danger. -, "What Is the matterf" I asked. "The interrlewersl" "Neasense, net here surely," I 'exclaimed. Ne sooner were the words out of my mouth than two young men banded me their cards, with the anneuncementithat they were jour nalist. "We have come te present 'our respects te you," they mid, "and te wish you a pleasant time in our country." While they uttered these r words they scanned me from bead te feet, jetting a few strokes en their note books. They were tak ing my portrait, which appeared next morn ing at the bead of the articles that the press of New Yerk thought fit te devote te me. Oh I that first afternoon in New Yerk, spent in the company of .thelintenrie wen 1 I shall sever forget itl The office of my lecture manager, MaJ. Fend, was situated en the ground fleer of the Everett house, where I had put up. Thither I repaired after lunch te undergo the opera tion of tapping by eight interviewers at once. "Abl" said one of them, after the usual salutations, "we are going te bore you, se let us begin at the beginning." This made me smile. "I knew your first question," I said; "you are going te ask ma whether this is.my first visit te America." "Yeu are right; that is generally our first question ; but I have another te ask you be fore. Yeu have just eaten your first meal in America; what did you ha vel" "Qentlemen," I replied as seriously as I possibly could, "I have just been in for a piece of turbot, a beefsteak and potato chips, a celery salad, and a vanlla ice." "And new," remarked another reporter, "I have an important question te put te you. I hope it will net astonish you." "Oh!" I replied, "I am in America, and quite ready net te be astonished at any thing." "Well, then," said he, "I want te ask you what are your impressions of America," "Excuse me," I exclaimed, "I have only been in it three hours, and these three hours have been spent in this hotel. Yeu must t- really -allow me te abstain for the moment from telling you what I think of America; for you will admit, I hope, that one mutt have passed a whole day at least in America, in order te judge it with any accuracy." Hera I rolled a cigarette and rang for a lemon squash. The reporters immediately made an entry In their note books. "What Is that you have put down!" I A young fellow, with a face beaming with ttirity and Intelligence, replied: "I wrote that at this point of our conversation you rolled a cigarette and rang for lemon squash." The questions they asked really appeared te me se commonplace, se trivial, that I was almost ashamed te think I was the here of thb little farce. With the idea of giving them something better worth writing, I launched into anec dotes, and told a few te these interviewers, i Thb brought about a little scene which wa quite comic If I looked at one reporter a little of tenor than the rest, while I told an anecdote, be would turn te hb brethren and say: "Thb story b for my peker, you have no right te take it down; it was told especially tome." "Net at all," would cry the ethere, "it was told te all of us." Nxt day I procured all the New Yerk morning papers, mere from curiosity, I must say In justice te myself, than from vanity, for I was net at all proud of my utterances of the day before. Judge of my surprise en opening the first paper te find nearly two columns full of .muring details, picturesque descriptions, well told anecdotes, witty remarks, the whole cbverly mingled and arranged by men who, I bad always supposed, were mere stenogra phers. Everything was faithfully reported and artistically set down. The smallest incidents were rendered interesting by the manripr of telling. The major, for instance, who, ac customed te thb kind of Interview for many years, had peacefully dropped asleep, com fortably installed, with hb bead en the sofa pillows and hb feet en the back of a chair; my own gestures; the description of tha pretty and elegantly furnished office all was very crisp and vivid. They had turned everything te account; even the arrival of tha lemon squash was made te f urnLh a little paragraph that was droll and attractive. Yeu might have imagined that the whole thing was the first chapter of a novel, com mencing with tha majestic entry of a steamer dntoNewyerk harbor. Well, I said te myself, the American jour nalist knows, at any rate, hew te meke a savory hash out of very little. It seems curious that the vast and grandiose regions they inhabit should net hare Inspired the Americans with taste and talent for de scriptions of nature Fenlmere Cooper b the only great scene painter produced by tha immensities of the great western continent. Children it there be any children In America are net forgotten by literature. It basis te afllrra that there b no country where children are se well written for, by authors who have the secret of instructing uem wmie tney cnarm ana amuse mem, CHAPTER XXII. Ths Amerk. stage beasts some excellent actors, but it ewes its prestige rather te the talent of a few brilliant indivldueb than te distinction of ensemble. The plays are written for certain actors, and the secondary parts ere made te serve the purpose of throwing up the "star." Thb b why the French plays, that are trans planted te the stage of America generally fall. American theaters are net subventlenedby the state, and prirate enterprise can scarcely afford te give the publle the luxury of a whole company of talent The "star" b usually hb or her own manager, draws the publle and realizes the profits. The reper toire consists of two or three plays, which are performed before a New Yerk audience for a month or two and then taken round te the chief cities of tbe States. Thb b why ene sees fresh companies nearly every week in half the theaters. Today a drama, next week comedy, opera beuffe the week after. Sometimes the chauge b still morebrusque. Mr. Henry Irving and Mis Helen Terry gave a series of performances at the Star theatre, New Yerk, during the month of March lest. On their departure they were succeeded by a treupe of perform ing monkeys. The theatre was just as likely te have been hired by traveling revivalists. The Americans have an uubearable trick of arriving late at the theatre. Fer twenty minutes after the curtain rises there b a con stant bustling and rustling of newcomers, which debars you from the pleasure of fol lowing the actors' speeches. It the pby be gins at 8, they come at a quarter past; if (t begins at a quarter pest, they ceme at half past, 'and seen. At the time appointed for the curtain te rise, the stalls are empty. Thb bad habit annoys the actors and disturbs the spectators; but the evil b incurable, and managers try vainly te step It. I knew one who followed the advertisements of hb pby by thb paragraph : "The public are solemnly warned that, un less then bole of the first scene be witnessed, the subsequent action of the pby cannot be understood." Hb efforts were crowned with failure. Net te understand the play b a'plty, but net te create a sensation when one comes in, dressed In one's most killing attire, b out of question. It b the some at concerts and loctures. Theso who have booked their seats in ad vance come in a quarter of an hour or twenty minutes after the time fixed for commencing. When every ene b placed, the concert or lecture begins. The early comers, who have te wait until the lata ones have arrived, utter set a murmur. The patience of the Ameri can public b angelic. CHAPTER XXIIL The Americans ere Christians that b te say, they attend church en Sundays. Like ether Christians, they attend te business en weekdays. In America, religion b served up with sauce te suit all palates. Independently of the Catholie religion, there ere 189 different religious sects. England has only 1S5. Every geed preacher draws a full congre gation, no matter te which sect h belongs. The church in itself b net the attraction, and the minister has no ether Influence ever the people than that which he exercises byhb oratorical talents. A religious or moral lecture b as popular as a literary lecture, a concert, or a play. An American will go and listen te the minister of a sect differing from hb own, rather than sit and be bored by a tiresome preacher belonging te bb own denomination. He will rather go te hear Dr. McGlynn, the excommunicated Reman Catholic priest, or Dr. Felix Adler, the eloquent agnostic; re ligious as he is, be will sometimes regret that CeL IngerseU docs net appear in publle en Sundays any leuger; Protestant as be b, be bas no scruple about going te bear a musical mass in the Catholie cathedral; in fact, you can see him everywhere except in the churches where dullness prevails and the mini waits in vain ter fresh nourishment, i Tbe churches advertise a preacher in the newspapers as the theatres advertise a "star."i In default of a geed preacher ether attrae-1 liens are put forward te draw ths publvc.l Hew resist the two following appeals, posted at the doers of a New Yerk and a Chicago churcbj I cej4d theni word for word with praajaarat jsa - . - StekJltVaai. A It b probable that be Christian aver yet succeeded ia following minutely the precepta of the Gospel, the EseterbU may be right Te lire forever, say they, you hara only te remain virtuous, even in the married state, Celibacy must ba embraced. Celibacy pura aad staple, however, b net sufficient, for where there b no struggU there b no victory. Devotee must therefore marry, but In all honor remain celibates. If you succeed te mattering your panteat, no malady will at taek you, and you will become Immortal. "Bet," you will probably say, "de the Eseterbt never die!" Yes, they die once; but, according te them, thb does net prove the fallacy of their belief, If they die, it simply proves that they hara failed te attain the necessary de gree of perfection. New tha EseterbU are cafe te continue with us, for either they will arrive at perfec tion and become immortal, or they will fall away from grace and will hare children te well their ranks. Ths head of thb sect, which b a yet only about two year old, claims that when the Eseterbb attain perfec tion, net only will they ba Immortal, but they will have a clear insight into the future, a gift which will enable them te amass great riches. And, Indeed, tha utility of such an accomplishment en the stock exchange, f or instance, must be apparent at a glanca. Anether sect pretends te ba abb te cur all disease by faith. Tha faith of these fanat ics b net shaken by the death of their pa tient "If they had had mera faith they would bare recovered." Baring my stay in America, a well known evangelist published a volume of sermons with the following preface! "Ged has bean kind enough te own the words when I spots them. I hope He wUTglveHb blessing te tha book, new that the tame words appear in print" Many books are published in Franc with tha remark, "A work approved of by Mgr. the Archbishop of X.rt A volume, advertised a having been owned and blessed by the Lord himself, ought te have a wide sale, A truly edifying sight b that of the neby, dirty, blaspheming crowd, collected en Sunday evening eubide Madisen Square Gar den, New Yerk, en tha eve cf a "six days' go-as-you-please walking match," Frem 0 or 7 in tha evening, there b a betting, swearing match outside the gates. But the walking only begins at ene minute pest midnight Net te teke the name of Ged in vain, the English have invented many euphemisms; some men, imagining, I suppose, that tha Deity takes no cegnizance of any language but English, venture se far as te say Man Dbu or Main Gett At thb kind of thing the Americans are as clever as the English. They bar invented Great Scott I Something admirable in all the main re ligious sects of America b their national character. When I hear it said tbt religion b the sworn enemy of progress, especially of re publican institutions, I turn te America and say te myself: "Thb b not.true." There b no minister of religion, from the archbishops down te the most unlettered preachers of all the small isms, who would dare te tell hb congregation that liberty b net the most precieai, the most sacred of their possessions, and that the republic b net the most admirable the only possible form of government for America, In France there b much indifference en tbe subject of religion; but a great deal of in credulity b affected te satisfy a political bias. I am certain that if, in France, you searched into tbe hearts of the people, you would find there much less atheism than in many ether countries. Religious belief seems te be the nppanage of the royalist party, and ether people think they make a showjef 'republi canism by throwing ever the belief of the royalists. Tbe religious man b rather looked upon as a political enemy than as a religious antagonist. Thb b tbe true explanation of much apparent agnosticism in Franca. It must also be remarked that plenty of royal ists only affect piety and go regularly te church as a pretest against republicanism, and that many republicans may ba excused for taking thb display of religion for an act of hostility towards their pet institutions. Thb state of things b deplorable. Beth sides are te blame for It In England and America, where the form of government b questioned by mTene, re ligion does net clash with progress and lib arty, but lives with democracy in psaoe and harmony, as becomes a faith whose grand precept b: "Love ye ene another."
