TheUld Btyjeand Megern Fsnce Cempered, A inscription of the Hedge nelltby the Ohie Compsny-LisenMiet Farmers Favorably ImpniHd With II. TUe Dayton Hedge company, the pioneer In its line, has net only built mere hedge fenjbs than any ether in the country, bnt baa se greatly Improved the manner of thelr construction that their esage orange and barbcd-wlre fenoe leeks no mere like the dd fashioned hedge fenoe than chalk leeks like obcese. -Mr. A. R. Graham, the general agent et tie hedge company, organized a company of Lancaster county farmers and ethers and took them te Harrlsburg te show them a spcclmi-n of the hedge and wins fence en Cel. llllurep s iianusorne lann loeaica a mile or two eutside of Harrlsburg. Among the party wcre 11. J. McUranu, Cel. Ii. Frank Enhleman, Emanuel Keller, Cel. S. O. Staymakcr, II. Ezra Ilerr, Wm. II. 11 ro re slus. Gee. V. Eaby, B. W. Altick, Gcerge L. liuckwaltcr, and Walter Kieffer, repre senting the JYiru Era and J. 31. Johnsten the iNTELLIClESCEIt. After regaling at the Uuss heuse the party took carriages and dreve out te the Ilildrup farm, which Is in an admirable state of cultivation and Is beautified by several hundred reds of hedge fence, grown and trimmed under the old-fashioned method. Heme of the canes are as thick as a man's arm ; they are six feet high and spread at the top for a distance of nearly six feet ; and at various places along the hedge are openings through which a full grown hog could pass. On the opposite side of the read is a hedge, whleh until last spring was of the sanie kind. After much persuasion and with many misgivings as te the result, Sir. Ilildrup gave permission te the Dayton llfdge company te trim down the hedge te a little less than thrce feet in height, and te cut off all the lateral brandies until thore was nothing left of It but the canes, nnd they net occupying mera width than a pest and rail fence. Thcnevcry one of the plants (which wcre growing up right) was btnt ever te an angle of forty, tlve degrees, nnd securely held In that posi tion by four rows of barbed wire, the lower ene being near the ground, the upper ene neir the top of the fence, and the ethers between these. These barbed wires are securely held In place by small staples, driven at short intervals Inte the growing canes. After ene year's growth theso wires can hardly be seen, se completely are they embedded in the rniddle of the fence. BTItENOTH OF THE FENCES. The visitors wcre given an opportunity te test the strength of the fence, and the strongest man among them could net make the slightest Impression against it. A bull could net butt his way through It, and a ojMeno could net Injure it. Then it will last for a hundred jcars and be getting better and better every year. Mr. Ilildrup has about a hunrcd and twenty reds of his hedges renowed under the Dayton system, and will, of course, have all of his old hedges renewedliu the same manner as rapidly as possible The reader will understand that the roan nor of treating an old hedge like Mr. II 11 dmp's and planting a new ene is very dlfl'ercnt ; and that the new hedge, which requires a growth of four years, makes a niore regular aud beautiful fence. The canes are all neatly of the same size and the growth uniform. Following are the rules given for pro pre paring tbe grounds and setting a new fence : nOW THE HEDGE IS SET. Clear the row of all obstructions fences, stones, legs, tee clese overshading trees, roots, &.e. and plow the ground and pre pare it for planting the hedge as seen as the frost is out and it is sufficiently dry. Wliore the ground is well drainpd and youhae plenty of room, It should be pre pared as fellows : Firit. Dctcrminejust where jeu want your line of hedge te stand. Steentl. I'lew a strip of ground fully six feet wide, plow Ing deeply and turning the furrows eutuard, se ns te leave a deep, open furrow in the middle, just where the liuoef hedge is te stand. This plowing may be dene with advantage In the fall, or dur ing the winter if the fiest should be out se that It eui be done. 2 Air J. Put a geed quantity of well rot ret ted manure in this open furrow and mix well with the earth, wherever the ground Is net geed, rich and strong. Some pre pared fertilizer may be used Instead of manure If mere convenient. Fourth, Plew this strip a second time, this tlme turning the furrows inuard, se as te cover the manure deeply. This plowing Bheuld be dene In the spring. Fifth. Harrow this strip thoroughly, breaking up all clod and leveling it well down en the top, and If the weather should be dry, It will be better for being rolled either before or after the planting, or per haps both before aud after planting. Sixth. Set stakes at the chds of each line, and where the Hues are crooked, ether stakes should be set sufficient te insure tnat the hedge shall be planted just where It Is wanted. Where the ground is net well drained the plowing should be dene deeply, but all ene way, se as te avoid the open furrow or basin where the hodge It te be planted, and where the hedge is te be planted se clese te a fence, or where ground Is se scarce that it cannot be prepared as above directed, the plowing may be dene all ene way, or the row may be spaded up. But In all cases it should be dene deeply and thor oughly. All peer or weak places should be manured or otherwise fertilized, and all surface water should be drained elf. This matter should have careful atten tion, bb the success of the hedge depends very largely en the careful preparation of the row before It Is planted. The planting season commences as seen as the ground Is In proper oenditlon te work In the spring. TI1E COMMON METHOD. The most common way of planting is te get the young plants from the nurseries and set them w 1th a long narrow spade, The spade should be Inclined backwards at right 'angles te the line of the hedge and then pushed fern ard se as te leave au open space behind aud under the spade, into whieh the plant should be placed straight with the roots down and deep enough te cover all the yellow parts an inch below the surface, and thou the spade should be carefully withdrawn. This operation isro isre reated until the whele row is set. The hedge row should be cultivated aud ' kept free from grass aud weeds much after the manner of corn and potatoes. The manner of "plashing" the hedges Is as fellows : "When the pUnts are one or two inchesn diameter the lateral branches are trimmed elf. The plants are bent ever from the roots aud wired as stated abeve In Mr. Hildrup's hedge. The tops are out off abeve the upper wire, the new growth puts forth with wonderful profusion and with the Interlaced wires and branches forms an almost impenetrable hedge. Pruning is comparatively easy. Ily cut ting away the lateral branches the hedge becomes dwarfed, the growth of the roots conform themselves te the growth of the tops and the euly pruning necessary Is te pass along each side of the fence and with a pruning knife, made for the purpose, lop oil the lateral branches. THE CHEtrEST FENCE MADE. The Dayton hedge fence is the cheapest fence In existence It costs but 1.50 cents per j ear for three or four years, and after that it costs almost nothing at all the com pany offering te keep It in repair for ene cent a year. Se well pleated wcre the Lancaster vis itors with what they saw that it is probable a joint stock oempauy will be formed uuder a charter from the Dayton company the only company authorized te grant suah a charter, and they guarantee protection te all companies chartcicd by them, and will prorccute all Infringements en their patents. The Lancaster visitors after thoroughly Inspecting Cel. Hildrup's hedges and se curing much valuable information from Mr. Graham and Cal. Wachter, who trimmed Cel, Hildrup's hedge, the party drove back THE te the Rum Leube, where an elegant set-out was served. They neat took the Dy Express ana ar rlred In Lancaster at 4:45.
