Thore were evor alxtyel the elty lights out tbe greater pirt of last night, and tbe darkness eaused n rather tunny mistake which might have proved aerleua. Last evenlng William Flsber, a young man who resides en Mary atreet, attonited a party. After it was evor he started te caoerl home n lady who resides In the eastern part of the elty. On his rettirn he walked lu Chestnut street and when he reached the corner et Llme he came across threo men who In n rather savage style yelted nt him te step. The vicinity was very dark, and, as the young man did net knew why Buy body should eall at him at that late hour, and thinking that seme thing was wrong, he did net atop, but hastcued away. The men brgan firing a re liver , and .this only frlghtoned Fisher mera1 Tle "sopjeiad. seme ene was trying te de him barm and he ran te tbe Pennsylvania ata tlen, where he told of the tuoldent and afterwards left for home. He could net see the men who wero after him and had no idea who they were. The report spread oenoernlng tbe affair this morning and meat psople bolleved that some ene had intended te rob or murder Fisher, Thla forenoon eneugh was learned at tbe station house te explain the affair and show tbat It was a mistake all around and the non eloetrla lighting ayetem In use bore was thocauseof Itall. Seryeant Hartley and Olllcera Dare and Glass, of the rolleeforoo, were standing at this corner when Fisher came along. The llgbta were out, aud as the officers thought the man whom tbey wero unable te roeognlza was acting suspiciously, tbey called te him te atop. When he refused Oflloer Glata 11 red his revolver In the air several times. The police say that tbat part of the town is at tlmes Infested by bad cbaraolera who oemo along the railroad, and they weie always en tbe alert for them. They had no ldea who Fisher wa-i and they think tiny had geed oauae te Btnp him. On tbe otber bend there is ilttle doubt that Flsber had plenty of cause te bn frightened at being stepped by inen unknown te him, and seme folks think the pistol sheeting waa uncalled for, as afterwards the pollee did net fallow Fisher, who they considered auspicious, te the station, wliere they oeuld have captured him.
