Iltebard M. Tlellly, for the past two yearn
se editor of the paper, has been sold anil
transferred by hlin te A. J. Stelnman

Kepler, at Nes. 40 and 42 North Queen
street, this city.
Qnlte Intolerable.
It Is quite intolerable that there should
be two gauges e? street railroads in the
city ; one Is bad enough ; two are un
endurable, and we de net believe they
will be found in any city. It la the duty
of councils te see that the gauge of the
railways Is uniform. If there are any
complications because of concessions at
ready made, the cost of untnngllng them
may fall en the city. The Mlllcrsrille
read claims, we believe, the right te
put down T rails, and te run freight
cars ever its tracks ; it may claim
the right te draw them with steam
engines. We de net knew what
lack of wisdom en the part of the city
authorities in the past may have war
ranted such extravagant claims. We
have net examined the question, but It 1b
never safe te say what fiasTJeen the depth
of ceuncllmanlc felly. It is possible that
the city cannot direct the Millersvllle
company te change its rails or gauge,
without paying the cost of the work.
But if the city railway that desires te
make the connection is willing te pay
this cost, as it should be, there should be
ample power In the city te direct
the work te be dene within the
city limits. It the Millersville
railway wants te keep its present
gauge outside the city it can de se, or it
can change it at its own cost. The city
surely is net bound te permit a gauge te
bs maintained en lis streets that has be bo be
ceme a nuisance. If the Millersville com.
pany had possessed enough public spirit
in the outset te make their gauge te the
tread of wagons and te put down flat rails
that wagons could use, it would be enti
tled te mere consideration. Hut it inten
tionally laid a track that wagons could
net use, with the avowal that it would
thus save the wear of its iron rail, and
any loes it can be put te new for Its mean
ness will ba a just retribution.
Republican Institutions,
Mr. Blaine is tee smart a politician net
te knew the damaging effect upon the
Republican canvass et a declaration that
the president and the people have no busi
ness te interfere with the trusts, which
are se obnoxious te the public nense et
right. Mr. Blaine does net knew whotber
they are altogether right or rang, but
considers them entitled te be let nlone.
Se de net the people, think ; and it is
hardly conceivable that Mr. Blalno'sleng
absence from current of sentiment has
left him completely at sea na te public
sentiment upon se interesting and live a
topic. If absence has such effect upon
the judgment of se astute a politician as
Blaine, it will be advisable for the politi
cians hereafter te stay at home ; or te
keep their mouthe shut after they get
borne until they can catch en te the pop
ular impulses.
We incline te account for Mr. lllalne's
rashness nf declaration about trusts by
the supposition that he is net particularly
solicitous for Harrison's election, and
would prefer te keep the Republican
party in his own bands, where It seems
te be fairly ledged at present. He, In
stead of Harrison, is looked upon as 'its
leader. He gives the party its cues, and
its ethtr leaders seem grateful te him for
taking it upon his shoulders. It
may be otherwise, however, if he
continues te show such evidence ns
he has shown lately that its success in
this election is net his prlme considera
tion. Matthew Stanley Quay, who has net
been fend et Blaine, can hardly be mere
fend of him new that he finds hlrase
peer an aid te the success of the canvass.
Maliciously or stupidly, he has been a
very bull in the Keptibllcan china shop.
When be leads en te Mr. Quay the need
of defending the virtue et trusts he lays
upon him mere than he knows that be
can bear. tAnd the Republican new,
paper organs knew It. Nene of them
have found courage te applaud Mr.
Blaine's views. They doubtless think a
great deal better of them than they care
te publicly declare. There is no doubt
that Mr. JMulne expressed the real feel
ing of the mass of Republican leadeis
when he deprecated interference with
trusts. They are Republican institu
tions ; and are naturally upheld by men
who want excessive tariff taxation te
protect their interests. Uut the poll pell poll
tIcian8knew tee well the popular an
tlpathy te trusts te say a word In their
fiver in apolitical canvass. Mr. Blaine
Is reputed te be the smartest of poll,
t'cians , and unless we attribute te him
a stupidity and Ignorance which Is net
characteristic of him, we have ground
for suspicion that he is thinking a geed
d al less et Harrison's election tlmh of
3Blalne'a political future, te which it
yt juld bode no geed.
t'fcance Acquaintances,
We read in a Philadelphia morning
aCTspapera harrowing tale of hew me
O. F. Andersen has been playing the
Villain at eeaside resorts by deceiving
aixptible young women, and causlig
taetn te believe that he was ready te die
for love et them. Andersen is iuarrkd,
wVch nude his ntamy all the worse.
Oaa et the yeuig women who was badly
tkca'.vid by his misrepresentations,
aalTwlysald that Bhe thought Andersen
was a preifer enough acquaintance, be
cmuse ahe had been presented te him by
M clerk at the eminently respectable
hotel at which she was being entertained.
Therein the young woman made a most
egregious blunder. And when she gets
te be a few years elder aha will learn the
reason why. It is pretty safe te eay that
the man who is anxious te meet a woman
in a hotel, and who uses a hotel clerk as
the medium of acquaintanceship, is
either an incipient or full-fledged
scoundrel. And If, young women
could only be rnade te realize
this fact te the fullestextent, there would
be less villains of the Andersen type. It
by no means fellows that a well dressed
man at a fashionable hotel is a desirable
acquaintance. Unless his pedigree can be
ascertained he should be made te keep
at n distance.
But our young lady friends will say
possibly that this rule of action would
put an end te that most titillating and
delightful pastime of flirting, and se It
should, rilrtlng is as old as Neah's ark
and human nature, and where these en
gaged thereiu have mutual knowledge of
each ether and only lack a formal presen
tation, there may be little te crlllclre in
it. But Indulgence In this kind of flirting
leads en te the ether dangerous species of
" making eyes" at strangers, which in
vites certain calamity.-
Yeung womanhood is such a fair and
tender flower that it cannot withstand
rude blasts without serious hurt te itself.
Beware of chance acquaintances at sea
side or mountain hotel, fair maids, for
"be thou ure as ice and chaste as snow,
verily thou shnlt net escape calumny."
