Mr. Blaine asserts that trusts nre largely private affairs. We Lave been under the impression that they are largely matters of public concern, but it is just possible that this may nil be a mistake, and that the general public has no business te concern itself about them. A number of citizens organize the sev eral industries that they control in such manner that the price of the product depends entirely upon their own sweet will. They plan te secure and held an absolute monopoly. This is the substance et the meaning of the word, and yet we are told that "the trusts are largely pri vate affairs, with which neither the pres ident nor nny citizen lias any right te interfere." Even Mr. Blaine will net deny that it would net ba right for one man of for tune te buy and held all the wheat in the market in order that the price- might be forced up. Is it any mere right fcr u few te take charge of sugar, lumber, salt, oil, rubber, cordage, and a hundred ether things in such a way that the public most pay any prlce.tlmt these few rich men choeso te exact V Is it net u matter et public interest that a few men should aiy te the nation what price sugar should have regardless of demand and supply ? Truly, it is a curious notion that an in jury te all is the concern of none, yet it is gravely announced in this greatest et republics by the most " distinguished living American." Ne one can have the hardihood te deny that the trusts are an injury te all, The price of sugar has just been forced up one cent by the trust. Fer that cent the peeple get nothing. Tae sugar they get has no greater intrin sic value than it had before. The in creased cost is net due te smaller supply or larger demand, but is simply a tux outrageously leyied by people who have no right but that of might. Congress lias often recognized the injustice of truBts, and sought te check them. State legis latures have wrestled with them, and the foremost statesmen anil economists of our day have declared this trust idea te be one et the greaU st perils t.-efote the re public. Yet James U. Blaine, asserts that we have no business te interfere, because trusts are largely private Hffalra. ltfalne and Carlisle. Speaker Carlisle says he is leady te meet Mr. Blaine in a joint debate ou the tariff. New let us see whether that prince et wire-pullers and dealer in glittering generalities will tee the maik in an intel lectual contest with a man who is teeming with facts in support of the Democratic position en the tariff, and who has a way of using these facts in a cumulative fash ion te Inspire terror In the man who de rives arguments fiem his imagination. It would be n cheering Bight te see Speaker Carlisle thy ex-Speaker Blaine. The latter would have no chance te run te cover with the eyes of the country upon the combatants, lie would be compelled te produce flgures instead of Dae sounding rhetoric. Ue would be required te show why he deemed it necessary te bring lieme with him thirty two trunks stuffed with the products of European "pauper labor." He would he asked te threw mere light upon the question of trusts te which lie thus referred seen after his recent return: " I shall net dtseuss trusts thlsntternoen. 1 shall net venture te ssy that they are altogether advantsgeeus or disadvan tageous. They are largely private affair, with which neltber President Cleveland nor any private citizen has aey particular right te Interfere" lie would be asked te reconcile this statement with that plank of the Repub lican platform which takes strong ground against trusts. He would be brought face te face with the question whether l.e is in favor of the free whisky new sug gested by the Republican platform, or in favor of taxing whisky, as he said In his Paris "message," because there was "n moral side" te the question. Thus would Mr. Carlisle keep the Maine statesman en the het gridiron of inquiry, and thus would he expose his shallowness and his insincerity. Let Blaine and Carlisle meet and anathema te him who first cries "enough." Wanted, a 1'ark. Mr. Edward C. Knight, et Phlladel. phia, has just made known lib intention te give a puk of a hundred acres te the village of Colllngsweod, New Jersey. The ground selected Is noted Ter its natural beauties nnd is new being im proved by the laying out of walks and drives, the construction of summer houses and also of a lake covering some six acres. Lancaster should by all means have a park, but if we wait for some wealthy philanthropist te give us one we will in all probability have te wait for many generations. A. liberal man of wealth could hardly And a way of spending money that would give better or mere certain return for the geed of his fellow men. Other charities may fail through neglect or incapacity of management, but nature is the reliable and deathless guardian of a public park and no matter hew It is neglected It will always give pleasure und health te thousands. Thess considerations should move some one te leek out for the needs of every city in thla way, but they should also move the citizens te leek out for themselves. There are several tracts of land near this city that might be thrown open for park use at very little expense, because of their natural beauties, and ex. te&aJonsef the street railways could reach tb, Above the new water wnrkatiiBra a splendid stretch of park laud along the i-vuwwga, aua already provided ?mu jiLiiifi buildings needed. Seuth of the city below the old factory bridge, is faetber flne piece et land well suited for the purpese, wllh the high bluffs of Indian Hill overlooking the Conestejza and the surrounding country. Farther down the stream opposite the cemetery, is a site easily accessible, and (reed ground might be found west et the town en the Lit tie Conestoga. We have plenty of beautlt til scenery en the winding course of this stream, and nn effort should be made te preserve a specimen of it for our own de- light and that of future ages. r-TT-r-. - Yellow Jack at Jacks im uc. In snite of the vigorous measures et the health officers and people of Jacksonville the fever is said te have assumed a mere severe type, se there can net be much en couragement from the small number of new cases repotted. Every thing that human knowledge and sklirceuld suggest has been done te check the plague and kill the germs. The city bes been thor oughly cleansed and a close watch sit upon nil who might by any possibility spread the Infection. Cannen have been fired from sunrise te sunset and, it he has net perished, the life of the wretched little fever germ must have been made quite miserable. But all these measures were directed against a comparatively mild form of the dlsease, for only five deaths are recorded out of thirty-three cases. New the authorities will have te fight fever of a mere severe type and in spite et the small number of cases should redouble their vigilance, for if the mere virulent form gains half the foothold that wus held at first by the fever there will be lit tie hope for Jacksonville.
