I ' 4 IHE LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER, TUESDAY. APRTLV1888. - ICE BOUND. By W. CLARK RUSSELL, Auther cf "The Wreck of the Oroirtner.'' "Jack Courtship," "ilu Wateh Ut- letr," "The Lady Maud " JSte. (OOSTISCSD.) My first step wns te Jicat seme brandy, nnd whlle this was doing I pulled open bis coat and t reed his neck, fetching a coat from tin cabin te scne ns a pillow for his head. I next removed his beets and laid bare his feet (which were Incased In no less than four pairs of thick woolen stockings, se that I thought when I came te the third pair I should And his legs made of stockings), and after bathing his feotfnliet water, of which tbcrewas a kettlef ul, I rubbed them with het brandy as hard as I could chafe. I then dealt with his hands in the llke manner, baring ence been sbipmate With a seaman n he told me he had Been a sailor brought te by sorere rubbing of his extremities after he bad been carried below supposed te be frozen te death, and continued this excrcise till I could rub no longer. Next I opened his lips, and findine be wanted seme of bis front teeth, I very. easily poureu a ur.im or brandy into bis mouth. Though I preserved tny astonish ment all this while, I seen discovered myself working with enthusiasm, with a mes pas sionate longing indeed te recover the man, net only becauw it pleased me te think of my being an instrument under Ged of calling a human being, se te speak, out of his grave, but because I j earned for n companion seme ene te address, te lighten the hideous solltude of my condition, and te assist me in planning our dcllverance. I built up a great fire, nnd with much trouble, for he was very heavy, disposed him in such a manner before it that the heat was reflected nil ever the front of him from his bead te his feet. I Ukowise continued te chafe his extremities, remitting this work only te rest; nnd finding that the brandy had stolen down bis threat, I poured another dram in, nnd then another, till I think he had swallewed n pint This went en for an hour, during which tlme be never exhibited the least signs of Hfe; but en a, sudden he sighed deep; n tremor ran through him; he sighed again, and partly raised his right hand, which fell te thodeck with n blew; his lips twitched, and a small convulsion of his face compelled the features into the slmilitude of a griu that instantly faded: then he fetched n suc cession ghs, and opened bis eyes full upon me. I was warm enough with my work; but when I observed him looking nt me I turned of n death like cold, nud felt the dew of an intolerable) emotion wet in the palms of my bends. Thcre was no speculation in his stare at first his eyes lay as coldly upon me as thoseof eflsh; butasllfe quickened in him se his understanding aweke; be slightly knit ted his brews, and very slowly rolled hisga.1 oft me te the f tirnnce, and se ever as much of the cook repm as vt as befere him. He then started as if te sit up, but fell back with a slight groan and looked nt me ngalu. "What is this?" said he, In French, In a very hollow, fccble voice. I knew enough of hislanguagoteenablo me te knew be speke French, but that was all. I could net speak a sjllable of that tengue. "You'll be feeling better presently; you must net expect j our strength te ceme in a minute," said I, taking my chance of his un derstanding me, and speaking that he might net think me a ghost, for I doubt net I was ns white as one slnce, te be plain, the mcre talking te a figure that I had get te consider as ehecrly dead 03 anj body iu n gra e j urd, was alarming enough; and then, again, tlibre was the sound of my owneice, which I had cot exerted in sikjecU for ages, as it seemed te me. He faintly nodded lite bead, by which I perceived he understood me, and said " cry faintly in English, but with a true French accent, "This is a bard bed, sir." "I'll speedily mend tliat," said I, nnd nt ence fetched a mattress f rem the cabin next mine; this I placed beside him, and dragged him en te it, he ery weakly assisting. I then brought clothes nnd rugs te cover him with, and made him n high pillow; and as he lay close te the furnace he could net have been snugger had be had a w ife te tuck him up in his own bed. I was very much excited; my former ter rors bad vanished, but my nwe continued great; for I felt as if I had wrought a mir acle, and I trembled as a muu would who surveys seme prodigy of his en 11 creation. It was yet te be learned hew long he had been in this condition; but I was perfectly sure he had formed ene of the schooner's peo pee peo ple; and as I had guessed her te have lecn lieie upward of fifty jears, the notion of that man having lain torpid for half a century held me under n perpetual spell of astonish ment; but there was no inore horror in me nor flight. He followed me about with bis eyes, but did net offer te speuk; perhaps he could net. I put a lump of ice into the kettle, and when the water boiled made him n. pint of steaming brandy punch, which I held te his lips in a jiannikln, w hile I supported his back with my knee; he supped it slowly and painfully, but with unmistakable relish, and fetched a sigh of contentment as he lay back. Hut he would need something mera sustaining than brandy and water; nnd as I guessed his stomach, after se prodigious n fast, would be tee weak te support such solids as beef or perk or bacon, I mused a little, turning ever in my mind the contents of the larder (as I call it), all which time he eyed ree with bewilder ment grew ing in his face; nnd I then thought I could no de better than manufacture him a broth of oatmeal, wine, bruised biscuit and u piece of tengue minced very small. This did net take me long in doing the tengue leing near the fuinace, and soft enough for the knife, and there was nothing te melt but the wlne. When the broth was ready I kneeled as before and fed him. He nte greedily, and n lien the broth was geno looked as if he would have been glad for inore. "Ne v, sir," Rajs I, "sleep It you can" with which he turned his head, nnd in a few minutes was sound asleep, breathing regu lai ly nnd deeply. CHAPTER XV. THE rinATE'a STOnv. I lighted my plpand sat smoking, think' Ing he would presently nwake; but his slum ber was as deep as the stillness I had thaw ed him out of bad been, nnd be lay se motion less that, but for his snoring and harsh breath ing, I should hae bclieed him lapsed into bis former lifticssness. At 6 o'clock the fire was cry low. Na ture was working out her own way with this rrenchman, and I determined te let him sleep where lie was, and take my chance of the night The gale made tt gt eat rearing. The ship's stem lay open te the gorge, and but for her steadiness I might ltae supposed mystlf at sea. I snugged me dew n amid the coats and cloaks in my cot, and, obstinately holding my eyes closed, ultimately fell asleep. It was a iittie alter 7 when 1 nweke. I lighted the lantern, but upon entering the passage that lead te tbe cabin I ebtr ed by my ownpcture that the schooner had net only heeled mero te larboard, but was far ther "down by the stern" te the extent of sereralfcit Indeed, the augle of Inclina tion w as new considerable enough te bring my shoulder (iu the passage) clese against the starboard side w hen I steed erect. The neise of the gale was still in the air, ami the boom ing and boiling of the sea w as uncommonly loud, I walked straight te the cook room, nnd, putting the lantern te the Frenchman, perceh ed that be was still in a heavy sleep, nnd that he had lain through the night pre cisely iu the attitude in which I bad left him. His face was se mullled that little mere than bis long haw k's bill nose w as discernible. It was fr.zlngly cold, and I made baste te light the fire. There was still coal enough in the corner te last for the day, and before long the furnace was burning cheerfully. I went te work te make seme broth aud fry some ham, nnd melt a little block of ruby coleivd w ine; and w hile thus occupied, turn ing my head a moment te leek nt the French - man, I found him half started up, staring la tently at me. This sudden confrentment threw me Inte such confusion that I could net rpeak. He moved hu head from sida te side, taking u iew of the scene, with an expression of tbu most inimitable astenltbment painted upon JjIi countenance, IJ9 then brought the flat 01 CH cena with a aromatic blew te his fore head, the scar en which showed block as ink te the (lre clpw, and sat erect. "Where have 1 beenP be exclaimed In rVcnch. "Sir," said T, speaking with the utmost difficulty, "I de net understand your Ian guagc. lam English. Yeu speak my tongue. Will you address me in itP , "English!" be exclaimed in English, drop ping bis bead en one side, and peering nt me w ith an incredible nir of amazement. "Hew came you here Yeu are net of our cdm any Let me ace'' Here be struggled with recollection, continuing te stare at me from under -is shaggy eyebrows as if I was some frightful vision. "I am a shipwrecked British mariner,'' said I, "and have been cast away uinm this Ice, where I found your schooner." "Hal" be interrupted, with prodigious vehemence, "certainly; we are frozen ui I remember. That sleep should serve my memory se." He made as if te rise, but set egala "The cold is numbing; it would" weaken a Hen. Give me a het drink, sir." I I filled a pannikin with the melted wlnn. which he swallowed thirstily. "Merel" cried be. "I seem te want life." Again I filled the pannikin. "Geed I" said be, fetching a sigh, as he re turned the vessel; "you ero very obliging, sir. If you have feed thcre we will cat to gether." I glve the substonce of his speech, but net his delivery of it; nor is it necessary that I should interpolate my rendering with the French words he used. The broth being boiled, I gave htm n geed bowl of It along with nplatoef bacon nnd tongue, seme biscuit nnd n pannikin of het brandy and water, nil which things I put uKu his knees as he sat upon the mattress; nnd te it he fell, making a rare meal. Yet all the whtle be ate be acted like a man be witched, as well he might, staring nt me and looking round nnd round him, and then drop ping his knife te strike bis brew, as if by that kind of blew be would quicken the ac tivity of memory there. "There is something wrong," said he, pres ently. "What is it, sirl This is the cook room. Hew docs it happen that I am lying here?" I told hira exactly bow It waaidding that if it had net been for bis posture, which obliged me te thaw in erdir te carry him, be would new be en deck with the ethers, await ing the best funeral I could give him. "Who nre tiie ethers!" asked he. "I knew net," said I. "There w ero four in all.countingyeurself; one sits frozen te death en the rocks. I met him first, and took bis watch from bis pocket that I might tell the time." He took the watch In bis bands, nnd nsked me te brine the lantern close. tubs uenmnuiiii.) 801ns Foolish People Allew a cough te run until It gats be yenfl the reach of medlctne.
