f. CTE lNGlSTER DAILY T&rELGEISGER. SATURDAY; MAjBTai.laa8. , . . ICE BOUND. By W. CLARK RUSSELL, Auther of "Ttn irVecfc of (hi Oronener,'' "Jack CenrttMp, '(ity Watch B- lout," "Tht Lady Afdurf " Ele. (oeimacao.) cnArrait xnt i kxpleiie tbe held abb ferwjabtle. It was pitch dark wttea ll awoke, and I conceived it mast be tbe middle of the night; bat, te my ajonlshmnt,;en lighting 'tea lantern and looking at tbe watch", which I had taken tbe precaution te wind up ever night. I saw it wanted but twenty mlqqtea te eight o'clock, se that 1 had "pessed through eleven hours of solid sleep. However, it was only needful-te recollect where I was and te cast n glnnce at tlie closed deer nnd pert, te understand why it was dark. I hid slept fairly warm, and nwoke with no sensation of cramp ; but the keen air had caused the steam of my breath te f reeze upon my mouth in such a manner that, when feeling the sticky lucouvcnlence I put my finger te it, it fell like a little mask; and 1 likewise, felt the pain f cold in my face te such an extent that had I been bllstcred there, my cheeks, nese and brew could net liave smarted mere. This resolved me henceforward te wrap up my bead and f ace before going te rest. 1 opened the deer and passed out, and ob served an amazing diffcronee,. between the temperature of the air in which I bad been sleeping and that of, the atmosphere' in the passage a happy, discovery, for it served te assure me that, if I was careful te lie under plenty of coverings' and te keep, the outer lair excluded, the heat of my body would raise the temperature of the little cabin; nor, pre-, vldlng tbe 'compartment was ventilated' throughout the day, was there anything te be feared from the vitiation of the air by my; own breathing. My Unit business was te light the flre and set my breakfast te thaw, and boil me a ket tle, of water; and while this was preparing I went en deck te view; the weather and te re volve in my mind the routine of the day. On opening the deer of the companion hatch I was nearly blinded by the glorious brilliance of the sunshlne eh the. snow; after the black ness of the cabin it was like looking at the sun himself, aiid I bad -te stand a full threo minutes with my hand upon my eyes before I could nccurtem my sight te the dazzling glare. It was flne weather again; the sky ever the gloss like masts of the schooner was a clear, dork blue, with a few light clouds blowing ever it from the southward. The wind had shitted at last; but, pure as the heavens were, the breeze was piping briskly with the weight and song of a small gale, and its fangs of frost, even in the compara tive quiet of the sheltered deck, bit with a fierceness that had net been Observable yes terday. The moment I had the body of the vessel in my sight I perceived that she had changed her position since my last view of her. Her bows were mero raised, and she lay ever far ther by the depth of n plank. I stared ear nestly at the rocky slopes en either hand, but could net have sworn their figuration wai changed An eagcr hepe shot into my mind, but it quickly faded into an emotion of ap prehension. It was cenceivable, indeed, that en a sudden seme early day I might find the schooner liberated and afloat, and this was the first inspiriting flush; but then came the fear that the disruption and volcanic threes of the ice might crush her a fear rational enough when I saw the height she lay above the sea, and, hew by pressure .thosejilopes which formed ' her cradle might be' janimed and "welded together. The change of her posture- then fell upon me with a kind of shock, and determined me, when I bad broken my fast, te search her held for a beat or for materials for constructing seme ark by which I might float out te sea, should the ice grew menacing and force ma from the schooner. I made a plentiful meal, feeling the need of abundance of feed in such a temperature as this, and heartily grateful that there was no need why I should stint myself. , , While I ate my mind was se busy with considerations of the change in the ship's posture during the night, that it ended in de termining me te takoasurvey of her from tbe outside, and then climb the cliffs and leek around befere I fell te any ethor work. Arming myself with a boardinrrpike te serve as a pole, I dropped into the fere chains and' thence stepped en te tne ice, and very slowly and carefully walked round the schooner, examining her closely and boring into tbe snow upon her side with my plke wherever I suspected a hele or indent. I could And nothing wrong with her In this way, though what a thaw might rovcel I could net knew. Her rudder hung frozen upon its pintles, and looked as it should. Heme little distance abaft her rudder, where the hollow or chasm sloped te the sea, was a great split thrce or four feet wide; this bad certainly Happened in the night, and I must have slept as sound as the dead net te hear the nolse of it. Such a rent as this sufficed te account for tbe sub sidence of the after part of the schooner and her farther inclination te larboard. Indeed, the hollow was new coming te rcsemble the "ways" en which ships nre launched; and you would have conceived by the appear ance of it that if it should slepe a little mere yet, off would slide the schooner for the s?a; and In'tbe :1ght pesture, tee that Is, stern en. hut I prayed with all my might and main for anything but this. It would have been very well had tbe hollow geno in a gen gen tle declivity te the wash of the sea te tbe water itself, in short; but it terminated at tbe edge of a cliff, net very high, indeed, bat high enough te warrant the prompt founder ing of any vessel that1 should launch herself oft it Happily the keel was tee solidly frozen into the ice te render a passage of this description possible; and the conclusion I ar rived at, after careful, inspection, was that the sole chance that could offer for the do de livery of the vessel te her proper element lay in the cracking up and disruption of the bed pn which she lay. ,. J Satisfied as te the state of the ice and tbe pesture of the schooner, viewed from with out, I sent a flew and piercing gaze along ths ocean line, and then returned te tbe ship. The strong wind, tbe dance of the sea, the grandeur of the great traet of whiteness, vitalized by th flying of violet clend shad ows along it, had fortified my spirits, and being free (for a while) of all superstitious dread, I determined te begin by exploring the forecestlo and ascertaining if mero bodies were in the schooner than theso two in tbe cabin and the giant form en deck. I threw seme coal en the fire, and placed an ex tongue along with the cheose and a lump of the frozen vrine in a pannikin into the even (for I had a' mind te toste the vessel's stores, and thought the tengue would make an ngrco ngrce ngrco nble change), and then, putting a randle Inte the lantern, walked very bravely te tbe foro fero fore castla and entered it I was prepared for the scene of confusion, but I must say it staggered me afresh with something of the f orce of tin first impression. Bailers' chests lay open la all directions, and their contents cevered the decks. Tnere was tbe clearest evidence here that the majority of the crew had quitted tbe vessel in a vio lent hurry, turning out their boxes te cram their money nnd jewelry into tbclr pockets), and heedlessly flinging down their own anil the clothes which had fallen te their share. This I hed every right te suppose from the character of the muddla en the fleer; for, passing tbe light ever a part of it, I vi Itncssed a great variety of attire of a kind which cer tainly no sailor in any age ever went te sea with net se fine, perhaps, as that which lay In the cabins, but very geed, nevertheless, particularly the linen, In many places, glittering among the clothes, were geld and silver, coins, a few sil ver ornaments, such as buckles, and watches things net missed by the pirates in the transport of their flight. In kicking n coat aside I discovered a ceuple of silver cruci fixes bound together, nnd closeby were a silver goblet and the hilt of a sword broken short off for the sake of the metal it was made of. Nothing ruder than this interior is im aginable, The men mast bave been, mighty put te it for room. Tbcra was a window in ths bead, but tin snow veiled it. May be the rogues messed together aft, and only used this forecastle te He in. Bight under the batch, where the light was strongest, was a dead rat. I stepped te pick it up, meaning te flips it. pn, tq the tlk, but U tall brake elf at the rump like a pipe stem. There was a quantity of IiHl!PP?.rtJyP9.3iVi I laSM tT it But ter catching itebt et some three Inches of the dark line the cover mads in the deck. On clearing away the clothes I perceived a ring similar te' that in the lata lata rctte hatch I and it rose te my first drag and left me the bold yawning black below. I peered down, and observed a stout stanchion traversed by Iren pins for the hands and feet. The atmosphere was nasty, and te give It Ume te clear I went te the cook house and warmed myself before the flre. The f raah air blewinK den the forecastle Hutch tpeedlly sweetened the held. I lowered the lantern and, followed, and found myself xn top'efiokaerunior spirit casks, which en -y sdklflg'tbem' returned "awTa solid note. ' This was a rioble discovery te fall upon, and It made me feel se nappy that I de net knew that the assurance et my being immediately rescued from this island could have given lighter pulse te my heart. Tbe candle yielded a very small light, and it was difficult te see above a yard or se ahead or around. I turned my f ace aft, and crawled ever the casks and come te under tbe main hatch, where lay 'cells of hawser, buckets, blocks and the like; but there was no pinnace, though here she had been stewed, as a sailor would bave promptly seen. A lit tle way beyond, under the great cabin, was the powder jnagarlne, a small bulkheaded . compartment with a little deer, atop of' 'which was a small. bull's eye lamp.
