Same Dirsree Figures. t Mr.A.Partlett Lloyd, of Washington, f ks written a book en divorce law, which - contains much that is Interesting en this ' absorbing subject. In his classifying of " easy states " in which te secure divorces assays: The wife may secure a divorce ' tt her husband fail te support her in New , Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maine, Ver. ent, Rhede Island, Indiana, Michigan, ; Nebraska, Delaware, Tennessee, Nevada, Colerado, Washington Territory, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Arizona ; and for "wilful neglect" in California and Dakota. Dis appearance of either party is sulllcient cause in New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhede bland and Connecticut. Divorces are still readily granted in Rhede Island for "gross misbehavior and wickedness repugnant te and in violation of the marriage contract;" for "cruel and barbarous treatment of Wife" in Pennsylvania; for any or indefinite aaases at the discretion of the court in Wisconsin, Washington Territory, Arizona and Flerida; also in Ohie and Michigan where the ether party has secured a dU verce in another state, or after Ore years reluntary separation in Wisconsin and Kentucky. Giving statistics en the subject, the au , tner finds that the San Francisce ratio of divorces te marriages in 1SS1 reached the . amazing number of 1 divorce te ever- d.TS n marriages, largely exceeding the New England rate. The ratio of the two most populous counties of Minnesota increased la ten years in one of them from 1 divorce In 29.3 marriages te 1 in 22.0; and In the ether from 1 in 10 te 12 in 12. Fer six years the rate in Cook county (Chicago) Illinois, has been 1 in every 9.5 marriages. The Ohie courts in 1882 granted 1 di vorce te every 16 8 marriages. Philadel phia granted 101 divorces in 1862, 215 in 1872 and 477 in 1882, while New Yerk city granted 212 in 1870 and 316 in 1SS2 ; al though a much lanrer city. New Yerk falls Jtehind Philadelphia by 151 cases of divorce .,in 1882. This can be somewhat accounted for by the nine causes for divorce under Pennsylvania law and only one under the New Yerk law. Connecticut In 1878, and for fifteen years prier thereto, granted about 1 divorce te every 10.4 marriages. Vermont for the same year, 1 te 14. Massachusetts for that year, 1 te 21.4. Rhede Island in 1582, 1 te 11. New Hampshire in 1882, 1 te 10.0, Maine in 1880,1 te 10. The student of humanity will find feed for reflection in these figures. Tae Repnbllcan Convention. The Republican convention met and nominated in short order the slated candi dates, and Bpeedily adjourned after resolv ing that the Republican state government, from the governor through te Tem Cooper, chairman of the Republican' state com mittee, was as geed as it could be. It also resolved that the Democratic national ad ministration was as bad as it could be, and was only distinguished for Imbecility and for love of the rebel flag. Mr. Gladstone lias its approval; and se has James G. Blaine. Upen the tariff it makes its usual meaningless utterances, demanding that needful protection for American manufac turers and labor which no considerable body of people desire te take away from them. There is no issue presented by this con. ventlen for the campaign, save the general one of the respective fitness of the two par. ties te govern, as Illustrated by their record. It may reasonably be concluded that the opinion of the majority of the people of the state as te the national administration is net the one declared by this convention ; and if the voters act upon their convictions it is safe te say that the Republican ticket will stand a peer show of election. Hut Republican voters de net generally vote upon their convictions, any mere than Re publican politicians declare thelr's in con vention. These men who resolved that President Cleveland was imbecile in his administra tion have a very lively conviction that he te nothing of the kind. It came te them in unlim ited quantities, poured out at their right hands, from the beautiful stores of nature. "And new the deft workers laughed at the thought of competition. Heretofore they bad asked only that they mignt have the ex elusive potweraien of their country's market ; but as the new force was variously developed and applied they began te see that tbey could supply all the Inhabitants et the world w 1th their products, and were balked only by these ancient law which hindered the com ing of the ships and merchants or distant nations. " I'm is only a fable, of course. Tbsddeus 8teen and Jamea Buchanan ware In opinion, party relations, and per sonal characteristics in such marked and constant contrast and opposition that 1 did net knew they had ever co operated In any thing, except holding pew lu tbe same Presbyterian church ; and was surprised te find among Mr. Stevens' preserved letters, which are comparatively rew, two from Mr. Buchanan which show that at one time In their respective careers, when Mr. Stevens was In Congress and Mr. Buchanan In pri vate life and before his electieu te the presi dency, their relations were such that Mr. Buchanan felt at liberty te ask of Mr. Stev ens a personal service and that Mr. Stevens promptly and kindly responded. The subject-matter was net of large Import ance, but of that persensl sort which directly tests kindly feeling. 1 de net knew that Mr. Stevens' reply was preserved by Mr. Buchanan. If It was, It was net used by his biographer, Mr. Curtis, wbe in bis two stately volume found no oc casion te mention the name or Tbaddeus Stevens. But the reply was evidently such as te gratify Mr. Bucnanan, and 1 Infer from Mr. tiucnanati' eecenu iener u exprwwu n willingness te appoint Mr. Henry te the next vacancy for Lancaster county. All et the parties named In these letters are dead except James B. Henry, who prob ably never knew el the extent of the etlerta or bis uncle te promote bis desire, and William It, Kerdney, who in honored old age In Lancaster Is one of the tew remaining links between tbe two generations. Mr. Buchanan, ai appears tretn bis Life, (Vel. II, p. 10,) left Bedford Springs en tbe day intended, but Mr. Reigart, alone et theso named in the letter, went wltb him. Subsequent events drove these two distin guished uieu apart; and 1 believe that en the last day they met at the wedding, In HT7, of Dr. Henry Carpenter, recently deceased, Mr. Bucnanan repelled Mr. Stevens' friendly ad vances. At least. It is se stated In Harris' biographical history et Lancaster county, p. 677. It is mere agreeable new te recall tbe days, seventeen years earlier, when they were wllllrg each te de the ether a personal kind ness. Mr. Buchanan's piqued allusion te "the families" who are constantly en the watch te quarter their scions en the government Is a happy, almost plaintive, touch of nature. It Is also interesting te note the glowing terms In which Mr. Buchanan relent te Gu. Z?hary Tayler, then recently deceased. " Excellent and glorious old man " are warm words, which Mr. Bucnanan did net often use ; but they were true words. Had that great old man been permitted te live and fully settle the issues et In'iO, the country would, most probably, have been spared for many years tbe great convulsion which bis death accelerated, and whose culminating movements, ten years later, darkened the dote of Mr. Buchanan's administration, cast upon air. liucnanan a snadew irem which ne never emerged, and unquestionably Impaired the respect ler Ixith bis character and abilities which tlie country would, otherwise, have ! mere geuerally felt.
