On Saturday after noon Jeseph Welse, a fourteen-year-old son of Mrs. Annie Welse, living en -Maner street, came te his death by drowning. Yeung Welse left his home duriug the afternoon, telling fits mother or hUpurpoxe te go swim lng. The boy went te the river, at Uletz's Ice house, where the water is about fifteen feet deep. The river had been dredged at this place for an ice channel, while en either side of the channel the water is very shallow. Yeung Weise was net able te awlm, and could net have known tlie depth of the river. Removing his clothing he at once Jumped into the river, and Immediately sank out of Bight. About live o'clock liU clothing was found lying along the river shore, but the parties seeing the clothes were net sure they belonged te Welse. His mother was summoned te the river and identified them as belonging te her son. The news or the auair quickly spread about town and a large crowd seen gathered along shore. Kilerts were made te recover the body,but all attempts were with out avail and the search was given up late en Saturday night Karl yen Sunday morning Geerge 0. Kfiher went te the river and started hunting for the body, using a large pole. His search was successful about halt.past six o'clock, and Mr. 1'Isher summoned Jehu Sheets and Oswald McLaughlin, who get the body from the river. It was removed te his home and Corener llenaman, et Lancaster, was notified. lie came te town en Sunday morning and empannelled the following Jury : Chas. L. filbert, Andrew llardnele, U. F. Watsen, Wm. Wehrly, Henry Fisher and D. F. Laudls. An inquest was held en the body, and a young uey named Jehn Richards examined, lie stated that he was In the river at limner's aw mill and noticed young Welse Jump In the river at the lce beuse, sinking at once from sight. The Jury rendered a verdict that Jeseph Welse cauie te his death by being accidentally drowned intheHusquehanna river en August 2Jth.
