Newa was received In Washington a few days age of the death of Hener Del Catnpe, who recently figured conspicuously as the secretary of the Chilian leg.itien and was for a long tlme sole representative of hlsceuntry, after the departure of the minister, Souer Oeday. Sener Del Campe's death was caused by lev or at Pauama, where he had steppod en his way home. There was a peculiarly sad romance in the life et this young inan, the knowledgo of which, now new given for the first time, w ill serve te tomper the adverse criticism se generally bestow ed upon him during the latter p.irt of his stay in Washington. Previous te his appointment In the diple mats corps, Sener Del Campe was desperate ly in love with a beautiful Chilian glrl.whose parents, newever, reiuseu tueir consent 10 the marriage en account of the poverty of the suitor. This being the sole objection the veung man determined te ceme te the United States, win n uame for himself, aud theu re turn te claim the bride. The appointment as secretary te the Chilian legation was nt once secured through inlluential friends, and receiving from his lady love in parting the earnest assurance of her faithfulness and approval of his plans, Del Campe came te Washington, where he at ouce boeamo a favorite for his gentlemanly, qulet manners. With the sonler members of the corps Del Campe was held in high esteem as an up right, painstaking and iudustrieus young diplomat Aud well did the young man de serve the honor, for he led at this time an ex emplary life, practicing the utmost frugality in order te save In every wav toward amassing the sum which, In the eye of his prospective father-in-law , was necessary before the su bjeet of marriage with his daughter could be discus sed. Things went en thus for a while when suddenly ene daycamethe intelligence tbat all bis labor had been for naught, that, in obe dience te the wlllef her parent, the fair young Chilian had been lalse te her vows of con stancy and was married tea man of great wealth. Fer a tlme Sener Del Campe was fairly stunned by the news, aud refined te credit its truth. Theu all ambition, all hope for the future, and everything which renders life deslrable appears te have departed from him, and he plunged into the wildest ex cesses. One discreditable episode tollewed another In quick success' ju, until the young diplomat, who bad formerly borne such a stainless reputation, was abandoned by all his associates, and, bis conduct coming te the knowledge of the Chilian government he was recalled from Washington in disgrace. Se great was his repugnance te returning te his country that en the way he stepped for a tlme at Panama, where no contracted the fever, which proved fatal. In the light of this sad little romauce, which absolutely broke his heart and rend ered him a reckless man, Sener del Campe's friends will lese sight et these escapades which threw such a cloud upon the latter part of his stiy in Washington. They will remember him only as the light-hearted young lellew, happy in his thought that by honest endeavor he w euld ev ercome fate and win the woman he loved. a riBsaiHit KxrKsat:, ExjiledlnE a Juart of Djuainile t'uder tbe Ileime V herein Ills V.uinj Is Sleeping.
