JUNK Ks 1886 Mr. Wolfe Mounted. Charles B. Welfe formally reiieiiiiced the Republican party and all its works in a speech made by him at a Froiiibitien mrns meeting held en the leth, at Itaidfenl, iu McKean county. lie repudiates Funns)! vanla llepubllcanlsni 3 repugnant te his conscience, his manhood and his patriot ism, and put en the white robes of tlie Prohibition party. lie was then and there presented as its candidate for governor ami he promptly accepted the iiomlmtieu. The movement is important and will have a material inlluence upon the politics of the state. Mr. Wolfe is a man of abounding courage and energy, and will lead the party he espouses with dash and vigor. It has behind it strong elements from which te command a lively growth if it is properly invited. There is no doubt that the temperance sentiment is growing. Every wise man is a temperate man; and the step from temperance te prohibition is easily taken, though in fact the distinction is very great between the two principles, one being as wrong as the ether Is right. Te be temperate is an injunction laid upon every sslf-respectiug man for his profit ; and the state has no business te take the burthen of his individual responsibility from his shoulders, by excluding whisky from articles of diet, lint the disgust at intoxication and its work is becoming se great in the popular mind as te create a strong demand fur the suppression of the evil ; and prohibition will be welcomed by many in the belief that nothing clse or less will de the work. Mr. 'Wolfe, mounted en such a horse, can make a geed canvass of t he state ami coue out with a very creditable vote. Light en Oleomargarine. Light Is breaking en the oleomargarine question in Washington. The Senate com. mittee en agriculture en Tuesday gave a hearing te two distinguished scientists who were ready te stake their professional reputations en the statement that o!eo e!eo o!ee lnargarino was a puru and wholesome pro duct. FrofesborMoiton, piesideut of the Stevens Institute of Technology, declared that if the fats from which thuoleomaiga thueleomaiga thuoleemaiga rineoil was produced weie tainted in the slightest degiee the oil would become ex ceedingly uiloiisive te t lie smell and taste, and when made into oleomargarine would be unsalable. Thosauie condition would arise if carelessness or wilful neglect oc curred iu the manufactuie. The use of unwholesome materials would of ne tessitj make the product offensive, and this would be the best safeguard against danger from the consumption of this article of feed. Professer Chandler, of Columbia college, who is also president of the Xew Yerk beard of health, regarded the oleomarga eleomarga oleemarga rino discovery as one of tiie greatest of the century. He said its manufacture was necessarily mera cleanly than butter making, and that it was pure and whole some, and contained all the components of butter in the same proportion as iu dairy butter, except that the proportion of flavor ing matter was less. These are weighty opinions and are eal eulated te attract public attention te the iniquity of the. measure new befoie Con gress te crush out the oleomargarine in dustry. Hut high and above- all these is the constitutional objection te the bill. Congress has no right te tax oleomargar ine, when sold as such ; and when itddes se, it discriminates against this industry te favor the dairy interest. Xe govern gevern ment where justice prevails should ieru)it this form of oppression. The Latest C'rae. New Yerk's excitement just new is in her yacht races. Whether the ieopIe of Getham are really as much btirred up ever these toys as their papers represent, may be doubted. It is the business of the met ropolitan journal te make an excitement every day if it cau, and very small pegs are needed for the purpose. There is an English beat te arrive seen, brought by a royal tar, named Ilenn, which has just been beaten at home iu all her races, and comes ever here te challenge the best of our beats. Her inglorious career at home would seem te lie a damper upon the chance te rake nny great interest in her centeit willt our beats, but as the newspapers waut the excitement raised and the home yachts and yacht clubs are anx anx ieua te be talked about, we are te be , V. a few weeks of "autical repot ts, sketches et beats, which are all alike as two peai, and columns of sea foam writing. It is all well. The sail beat has gene out, but amateurs may still inquire hew she is best built for speed.
