ginia la 1826, and after the death of his father
when he was Tery young;, came te
Lancaster coon ty and resided In Mount Jey,
where be engaged in the trade of black
smithing. About eighteen years age be
neTed te Columbia where he has since
resided. Fer about twelve years he
was yard bow at the Chestnnt Hill furnaces
during the Incumbency or Mr. C. A. Nourse,
as manager, but about four years age lie ac-
cepted a position with Mr. rerrettet, which
he held until his death. Mr. Jehnsen has
been married ler forty years, and his last
illness waa the first sickness he had during
that time. On last Wednesday he whs
stricken with typhoid fever, but hopes were
entertained of bis recovery until yesterday
afternoon, when a change for the worse
waa observed. A wife and two sous
are left te mourn the less efa kind and loving
husband and father. Mr. Jehnsen was a
member of the Mount Jey ledge of Odd r al
lows. The funeral will take place en Sun
day alternoen at 330 o'clock. Mr. Jehnsen
was staunch Democrat and was a candidate
for borough offices and, although an adverse
majority caused bis defeat, a very flattering
vote testified te bis worth ns a citizen of Col
umbia. Police Nete.
Charles Fltzpatrick, a workman at Yerk
Haven, came te Columbia last evening and
goten adrunk. lie was arrested by'OIHcer
llardnele. This morning he had n hearing
at the office of Squire Frank aud was com
mitted te Jail for five days.
Officer Kennedy, of the Pennsylvania rail
road police, arrested two men last night for
riding en freight trains. One of the uieu was
colored and was very well dressed; he car
ried small valise and n basket containing a
complete set of barber tools. He gave his
name as W. J. Wilsen. The white man gave
bis name as Geerge Kesebury. Sqr.ire Frank
committed mem te jail rur ten days each.
Lee Andersen, a colored resident of town,
entered suit at the ofllce el Squire Kvans
against Samuel Richardson, auoiher colored
man, ter throwing stone. Richardson
threw a atene at a man aud a small daughter
of Andersen was struck by the missile ; a
terrible eash was cut In the forehead which
received medical attention. A hearing will
take place this evening.
The National Game.
The Saturday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, the
Columbia base ball club will play their first
game of ball for this season, the opposing
club te be the Keystones, of Manbeim. Man
ager Bear feels confident that the town club
will make a reed allowing and a line gauie
may be expected. The following uniform
has been adepted: Gray cloth pants and
shirt, square cap of same color trimmed with
narrow band et red, wbite canvas shoes, red
woolen stockings, and red worsted bells.
Fer the first game the seating capacity will
net be arrauged, but the manager expects
that within a short time geed accommoda
tions will be furnished te the patrons of the
game.
Town Mele.
Harvey Llchty, a son of Benjamin I.lchty,
living en Walnut street, was playing in the
street last evening, and was knocked down
and run ever by a wagon driven by a farmer.

Superintendent William Maxwell, of the
United States postelllco Inspector's efllee,
was in Columbia Turbday alternoen, when a
thorough examination was uiadn of the ost est ost
elllco. Tlie inspector found its affairs in tirst
class condition.
A small boy named Brown, living en Union
street near Lancaster avenue, managed toget
asmnll green peauli u his nose. A doctor
was summoned and the object was removed
after some dlflleulty.
The Sunday school of the United Brethren
church will ob-erve Children's Bay en next
Sunday by holding services at 10:30 a. lit. and
1:30 p. in. Thechurch will be finely decorated
for the occasion. The pregramme will con
sist of music, recitations, sluglug, etc.
Werk will be commenced in a lew dava for
the erection et 12 new houses en 5'erth
Third street near Maple. They will be of the
cottage style.
A camp of Indians are new exhibiting in
Wrlghtsville in several tents. They give an
illustration of their peculiar maimer et living
and ceremonies.
On Thursday afternoon a team was being
driven down Bridge street ceutaluing a limn,
two ladles and and a small child. As a train
was passing en the Pennsylvania railroad
the driver was cautioned te step his team.
The man get from the wagon te held the
horse, causing the weight te be en the hlud
end of the vehicle. This caused the wagon
te tilt back and the ladies were compelled te
get out in very quick order. The herxe be
came frightened, but was seen quieted by
the driver.

taining the people of this place for the last
lew weeks, have left for Wrlghtsville. Thore
was a rivalry between them and the Salva
tion Army for the largest crowd. The In

The ladies of the Presbyterian church will
give a French tea party in Central hall H.Uur
day evening.

The executive beard of the Prohibition
county cftmrelttee has named Monday, Au
gust Dtb, as the day for the county cenven
tien te nominate candidates for the publla
offices, and elect delegates te the state con
vention which meets in Harrisburg en Au
gust 21th and 25th. Mr. P. H. Geedman, sec.
retary of the county committee, is arranging
for a publla meeting en the evening of the

General Clinten B. Fiske for governor, aud
at the same time the convention raised four

The nomination of a man like Uenerai Fiske
Is New Jersey will give a strong impetus te
the prohibition cause In Pfiinsylvaiila and
the Middle states. The prohibition issue is a

Mrs. Blumenstock, wife of Christian
Blumenstock, the well-known contractor,
died yesterday alternoen, at her residence
