V w .:c SSw Let Them Alene. The announced article en " What shall be dene with our ex-presidents," has ap peared in a popular magazine ; and, as might have been expected from a writer -who proposed such a question as one of popular Importance, the author suggests that they become senators of the United States for life, with half the salary received as president. In support of the preposition and against the suggestion that they might constitute a body of serious importance in numbers, it is stated that we have recently had -only three living cx presidents counting Grant, who is dead and Hayes who was never honestly elected-slnce the retirement of "Washington we have never been without one, and save in 1801-02, when there wcre live, we have never bad with us mere than four in any single year. The suggestion that these ex-presidents be made ex-senators, though net entirely novel, is exceedingly silly. It has no war rant in the constitution nnd no foundation in the spirit of our institutions. It is true that the Senate, as composed, is the subject of a geed deal of popular complaint. Tilere is deep-seated dissatisfaction that Kevada, with half the population of Lan caster county, has as much senatorial re presentation as New Yerk, and that the vete of Rhede Island, Colerado or Flerida, balances that of Pennsylvania. Rut all et this is in accord with our con stitutienal doctrine of state rights; and, though t may semeday be subverted, the chances are that there will always be enough of the little states, with great in letists at stake, te prevent the necessary three-fourths for a constitutional amend ment, altering the senatorial iepresenta iepresenta tien. The preposition te make life senators out of the ex-presidents meets no existing com cem nlaiuts nud.rcmctfcs no inequalities. It is n purely personal affair, mooted out of Aeration for a peculiar class, wne it is Inplained are put into an " awkward and cnibarasslng position," "atoncetho most conspicuous and one of the most powerless tizens of tlie republic"; "relega- eomparative obscurity of private msupperieu uy a single expression ei the nation's gratitude or the slightest elllcial recognition of the less Iho public service sustains in parting with his unique expe rience and trained familiarity with public affairs." It is further argued that if thus transla ted te the Senate the ex-presidents would be completely independent, with no obliga tions te serve and no ambitions te gratify ; .hence they would be the wisest and safest counsellers, the purest protectors of the republic. All of this is, of course, dreary nonsense, net even fit for the " midsummer" num ber of a first-class periodical. A man who has held the executive chair of this gov gev prnment leaves it' as he went into it, a elt " "izen of the republic. If he discharges his duties well he can never be less than an honored, heroic figure. He can retire with dignity te private life and always be an honored citizen, a sage and adviser of his party, or if in health and vigor, he "can, like Jehn Quincy Adams, .re-enter the political arena, win new laurels, and die in the harness with un dimmed lustre; or he can, like Mr. Ar thur, consistently and properly resume the pursuits of private life, and exemplify the Bpirit of a democratic country, whose citi Lzens when they cease te serve the public take no " titles " nor " ribbons " into their 'retirement because they never ceased te be citizens, If they ran an inglorious career, like Hayes, they deserve te relapse like him into obscurity. Each is pretty ccr vtain, in the long run, te get his own. Let the ex-presidents alone. The outgoing of llartranft and the Incom ing of Uadwalader give earnest of this. The lllke""lirUiicBS. It is very evident from the Dilke busi ness that no great injustice has been dene English society ns an entirety by the scan dalous exposures of the Pull Mull (Imclk. There seems te be sonie political animosi ty at the bottom of the affair ; and since the Gazettes i evolutions bere against the Conservatives, the exposure of Dilke's frailties is ascribed te the retaliation et his enemies against the Radicals, of whom Dilke was a chief. Heis a fallen pillar new; he has been sadly compromised and politically destroy ed, net by his indiscretion and sins, but by the exposure of them. On this side it is hard te understand what he has te gain except, perhaps, escape from jail, if his of fense is n jallable encr-by paying a large sum of meney te a silly woman and her cuckold husband ; but it seems that he thus avoids all discussion of the scandal in the newspapers, which te a public man is something, of course. Mcantime the spectacle of a half million people, en a mile and half of paper, peti tioning Parliament te de something for the suppression of vice seems te be ene te which political leaders cannot wisely be indifferent.
