General Grant dies when his sufferings bve obtained for him the sympathy of tlie world, and when time has calmed nil dis position te asperity in judging him. lie WW a man of strong character, hut net of strong mental powers. He would have gene from among us with a greater fame if he had iet se signally exhibited weak ness in his business connection with "Ward. After that it was net possible te claim for hiin even ordinary business sa gacity. His theatre of action was only that en which he gained bis fame. He was bold, decided and quick in his action. He demonstrated, what has often been proven before, that a great mili tary leader need net be great in any ether work. Grant was a great general, but a peer president. He had net the craft of statesmanship nor the natural aptitude for it. Honest him sejf, he was always the tool of the design ing. He clung tenaciously te his friends, and "yet had net the faculty of telling worth from worthlessness in men. He was a very peer judge of character, and was constantly deceived until the crowning and crushing deceit that hastened him te death. His impulses were generous and noble ; and when ids prejudices permitted, he was just . When he did ill, as when he did well, he did it in no half-way style. The Democratic county convention, held yesterday, though spirited nnd aggressive, transacted its business lit geed temper, and reached satisfactory conclusions. It is no bad sign that the meeting was se largely attended, nnd thai such universal Interest was manifested in its proceedings. It would be far belter for the party organiza tion In minority districts if the primaries were always well attended and the cenven tiens mero freely participated in by these who give vitality te the Democracy of the county. The delegates te the state convention are (It and fair men, of a representative charac ter. They are pledged te no man and te no man's man, nnd they go te the slate con vention te represent their constituents ac cording te their conscience and their in telligence. Tim substantial tuiaulmlty with which they wcre chosen leaves them all the frcer te de this. Fer county nominations the only contest was for jury commissioner; and it was conducted with such decency and dignity that the result reached must be gracefully accepted by all well disposed Democrats. It is true that it has been the custom te net reneminate the Democratic county efllclals and te alternate them between the differ ent sections of the county , but It is like wise true that Mr. Dillcr has net hud a full term in the elllcc, that he was mcicly appointed by the court te fill a vacancy, and that his discharge- of the responsible duties of the place has been se satisfactory te his constituents and the public that his nomination by his party was a well de served tribute te a tried and faithful oill eill cial. The convention very naturally viewed with suspicion and rebuked with emphasis the attempt te disturb the harmony of the proceedings and te perveit the object of the convention, by the introduction of the various resolutions which were offered en subjects net relevant te the work of a county convention. As the animus of their author was well understood, they wcie promptly and properly disposed of. A DAY UNDER THE EARTH. Tire LITTLE JILVE JIOOTI. The newspapers report very confidently the conclusion of the negotiations between Vanderbilt and the Pennsylvania railroad, anlrtell us that the Ueech Creek and Seuth Penn railroad builders are summoned te New Yerk te hear the re sult and te accept the terms their associate, Vanderbilt, has made for them. The Penn sylvania read is te get CO per cent, of the Beach Creek railroad stock and the Clear field Ceal company's stock, and is te guar antee the payment of interest upon bends representing the cost of the Beech Creek und Seuth Pennsylvania enterprises, and is te be given full control of the latter. It is a pretty scheme for the extinguishment of rivalry te the Pennsylvania read, but though sworn te be all settled, we continue te indulge our doubts of the accomplish ment. It is surprising enough that Mr. Vander bilt should desire thus te rctire from ids well considered Pennsylvania projects that are se premising of fruitful results. And it will be mere surprising if the icputa ble gentlemen associated with him consent te accompany him in his retreat, or rather te be kicked down the stairs ahead of him. We knew borne of them te be men of stamina and stature, with abundant ability withal te command the capital te compass their desires. They are net men te be treated by Mr. Vanderbilt as his slaves. We would like te knew hew Sentter William A. Wallace, of Pennsylvania, would leek, emeigiiig from the deer at the end of Mr. Vandetbdt's feet. .Senater Wallace is net a man te be thus treated He is net likely te assume the posture, Somebody will get hurt before that thing 4s successfully done. And when Vnndctbilt get's through with our old friend Heslctter, tee, he will lgin te understand that his hundred millions are net as big as he thought they were. Yeu see there is a geed deal of law standing iu the way of this deal, and even if Senater Wallace and the ether hitheite reputable men supposed te be engaged lull were' se, they would have te run amuck against the state of Pennsylvania and its attorney general, te cay nothing of the Reading railroad and Baltimore & Ohie, before they get through with it. And if 3Tr. Vanderbilt's partners are virtuous and self-respectful enough te kick back at him they Km bury him deep under the law. The constitution of Pennsylvania bays that no "railroad, canal or ether corporation, or .the, lessees, purchasers or managers of any , railroad or canal corporation, shall consoli date the stock, prepei ty or franchises of such corporation with, or lease or pur chase the works, or franchises of, or In any way control any ether railroad or canal cor poration, owning or having under its con trol a parallel or competing line." That was intended te cover just such a dicker as this Is rcertcd te be, nnd its tenns are sunicient for its purpose. The Pennsylvania railroad cannot directly or , indirectly obtain the control of either tl.e Bech Creek or the Seuth Pennsylvania viiilread. it Is net possible for it In any fway u N) whip the devil around the stump 1 te lawfully de what it is said te propose tade, And it is te be assumed that what fti cannot lawfully de, it will net be able te de ; and therefore that all tills talk of its MMllcmlugthesi) cnnllictlns reads, is rnrde lit itOJkJebbing purposes.
