HV UX.VM M.HU.T V.- J K CER has consistently favored a termina tion of this system of state edu edu catien, and it will continue te de be. In each extension of the sys tem, such as that made by the legislature " and governor the ether day, it recognizes a fresh abuse of it ; and from the logic of past events thore is no reason te suppose that the supply of "soldiers' orphans" will ever be exhausted in the state.whilc con tractors carjonake a preflt out of the man "agement of 'the schools se called. "When the last member of the (5 rand Army of the Itepublic shall have passed away, the "Sens of Veterans" will no doubt rise up te demand that the grand children and the great-grandchildren of these who fought in tfie war be clothed, fed and educated at the state's expenses, with the same cheerful confidence that the great-grand-daughters of the old presidents new display in trying te get en tlte pension roll. The Intelltei'.ni iiu l)clieves that at this distance from the war, when an "orphan fifteen ycarseld must liave been born five yearsafter the war ended, theie should be no differonce between the state's obliga tion te such an "orphan" and te the ltereft child of any ether citben. If the htate is prepaied te educate all the erplia"" well and geed, but we object te' the nffensive discrimination urged by the 07,500 nieni . bers of tbe.GU'and Army of the Itepublic, aeinst tiie children of just as geed and just as worthy citizens as they or their comrades; and ler uvery piluul caseap- jlinc te the state's charity among the 'JSs provided for by this system, there Hl Iks adduced a dozen atratust which it inates. ile we de net agree with some of the imental defenders of this discrimina- ion. that all objections te it are founded in malice or ignorance, this journal clearly recognizes that the objections lie te the system and the fault is witli the law, and net against the administrators of the sys tem or the beneficiaries of the law. In In In dividuallyaudiminodiatclycensidered, tlicio schools are undoubtedly doing a geed work; and, as an established part of the state's bounty, they merit the attention of the .public and are proper subjects of criticism or commendation accordingly as the the schools are managed. It gives us pleasure, thciefore, te note the highly iin iin preved condition of the school that is lo cated within the borders of our county, and te which most of the home pupils are sent. Seme of the conspicuous faults in its past administration have been cor rected ; and the exhibit made at its annual examination .sjieaks well for its piesent direction. Studying Lecal History. Seme attention te the larger study of local history may be awakened by the special examination held at the Lit. Jey soldiers' orphans school yesterday, en the geography, history, resources and institu tions of Lancaster county. It was very re markable that without any text book te guide them, without any previous indica tion of what would be the form and line of examination, the boys and girls of that in stitution had learned se much of what their ciders are ignorant of, and were able te tell it se well. That there remains, however, a wide field for study and observation en the im portant Bubject considered was manifest from the questions unanswered, as well as from these that were covered by the results of the examination ; and it is te be doubted if the ordinary public schools of the county, made up almost entirely of native-born pupils, would make se geed a showing. In deed it would be profitable, as well as cu rious in the results attained, te propound a like set of questions te the next institute of teachers held In this county, and have it determined whether our instructors knew as much of thelr own surroundings as they de of distant places and foreign tilings. In Europe the schools run te the ether extreme, of neglecting foreign geography ; hence the ludicrous and dense ignorance of foreigners, even Englishmen, regarding America. But there is j ust cause for reproach te our educational system that the boys and girls who knew wliat the Conference of Utrecht meant cannot tell the time or the meaning of the Emancipation procla mation ; sons and daughters of Lancaster county soldiers knew where Haddock fell and in what cause, but have forgotten or never heard of Heynelds ; the school chll araJW every atate capital en its own particular river, but they cannot locate the county court houses, old nnd new. Let geography, like charity, begin at home. It need net end there. " Patent Grease." The peeple who eej uethlng in the anti oleomargarine law but a bcheme te protect tbe public from the imposition of " bogus 'butter," will discover that it Involves principles of fnr greater moment that what we shall eat or wherewithal shall we be clothed. ' This law is au attack en popular rights and a restriction en commercial freedom. It Is retrogressive and unjust. It Isclas3 legislation of the most offenslve charac ter. It is a law against the Interests of the pjer uaafer the protection of people who want te deny him the right te eat what he sees lit, and te buy it where he can buy it cheap. The constitutionality of the law will Iks tested, and if such extraordinary legisla tion be aflinncd, the bill will easily be re pealed by popular agitation. The people of this commonwealth cannot afford te have the dykes of their constitutional rights perforated by such rat holes as this, or the sea will soensubmorgo them. Meiik mysterious than Odium's fatal lenp nre the whereabouts or Lancaster policemen when a breach of the pcace occurs. m m Phaihe from political opponents for a man in pnblle station is usually a sare indication that he deserve all and niore than he re ceives. It is for this reasen that when that staunch Republican organ, the Chicago Evening Journal thus siwaks of H. Corning Judd, the new Democratic postmnster of Chicago, It Is a complcle vindication of his selection; It declares that he is overy Inch n man "un nble lawyer, n geed eltl.en and n devoted churchman." The only objection the Journal has te Mr. Judd Is his nomecracy, te which, It says, he "clings With the tenacity of llfe In defeat and victory, right or wrenir." The first named rpialltles loud lustre te Mr. Judd's private character as well as harmony te his goneral make-up ; but his devotion te Democratic principles singled him out as one proper te lead the referm battle In the metropolis of the West. m m - Tub Lancaster bose ball management must reinemlier tbat geed order ana geed patron age always go hand In hand.
