There will lx) many icople wlie will find it hard te reconclle te their ideas of what is right the situations of two criminals whose cases are new occupying some share of the publicattentien. Edwin Belheras is te be hanged en April 7, for sheeting, en the streets of Hazleton, AVm. Xicliels, for a fancied wrong against his Uicce. The deed was net done in cold bleed, but was admittedly the result of passion working upon a mind e.Tily in flamed. A few weeks age, Ilichard Short, with the premeditation that is presumpth e of malice in the eyes of the law, waylaid Captain I'heUm in O'Donevan Itessa's ofllce in New Yerk and stabbed him. That Short's knife failed of its deadly work was net his fault. lie has never since pretended, nor has it been contended for him, that he did net seek the life of Phe lan. All that saved the latter's life was the accident that the knife, failed te pene trate a vital part. Yet we find a New Yerk pelice justice calmly permitting Short te leave prison en 83,000 ball te anuwer the charge of felonious assault, and net even held in his own recog nizance te keep the peace in the meantime. At the hearing Plielan asked for police protection, which request was received with a judicial guffaw accompanied by the remark that the state could net give him a body guard. But the Immunity this man Short enjoys after his murderous attack makes the favor niked nothing mere than a himple right. And Edwin Uethrm is languishing in the Luzerne jail, awaiting the moment when he will expiate with his life, the out come of a brief passion. There is some thing wrong in the law that permits these that are murderers in all that gees te make up the essence of the crime, and who have failed of their intent through accident merely, te walk the earth free men ; while theii niore passionate, but less fortunate brethren must pay the penalty at the end of a rope. Detective Agende. A yew Yoikflrinef detectives advises us uy circular that lfuerwlsli te ascer tain any t-peeial tacts " or have " any busi ness of a confidential nature te be investi gated " they will lie happy te lw favored with the job. AVe note the request for the purjiese of sug gesting that ene of the groingeils of the day lurks in this detectie agency busi hum, which is nominally conducted in aid of the law, but really in hostility te it. De tectives detect by being in collusion w ith suv-breakers; and seen the day will come, if it is net alrc.idy here, when there will be it Siamese connection between detectlve agencies and bodies of thieves. There h harm in thesa agencies, further further mere, in their invasion of the homes of the people, and in their leading the guileless into crime which they may find their ac count in entrapping them into. There are man) ways in which the evil-dipesed of men worry their fellewinen, and In which they may Iks helped t.y a detective agency, scrupulous only sis te the piellt of the job in hand. Detective agencies ha already earned for themselves se doubtful a reputation that it is time for the law-makers te leek into the question of their benefit te the community; and te enquire especially whether men, whose ostensible business it is te act as the elllcers of the law, should be permitted te assume that duty without being se in fact, and without lying under the oath obligations and supervision that bind the sworn officers of the law te their duty as its champions. Should it net be declared that the private detective agencies sire obnoxious te the law as --ossi-ble compeunders of felonies, promoters of litigation and consorts of ciiininals ? The Noblest or Them All. The Philadelphia Ittcordet te-day copied in approval the following paragraph from the "Washington Pest : "The country demands its best men in the cabi net. Mr. Thurman is pre-eminently of that rank. That Ohie cast her electoral vete for the Republican candidates renders him no less a statesman no less c ipable of usefulness te tlie public interests no less deserving of high public trust. AVe await with much curiosity the discovery of the view taken by President Cleveland upon Ui3 matter of putting Mr. Thurman in place at the head of his cabinet. ItLs n position for which he is se clearly indicated byhlspre-cmlnence in the esteem of the People, that the failure te put him iu it can only spring from the hostility te him entertained by the McLean set of Ohie politicians. The feio feie clpus airs and jabber of these- Ohie tern tits had such an effect upon the timid delegate te the Chicago convention as te prevent the nomination of Judge Thurmiu for the presidency. li0 would cer tainly have ben nominated if he had net had arrayed against him this opposition In his own state, contemp tible as it was In its material. It had absolutely nothing te urge against Judge JTuurman save that it hated him ; which was in truth creditable te him. The decision which President Cleveland raaches as te inviUng Judge Thurman te be liis secretary of state'vjll nerve te threw a great deal of light upon bis character and the line of his presidential policy; ami it is for this reason chlerty that we wait it with se much curiosity and interest. The failure te invite Judge Thuriuau te take hi.? natural place, at the head of the cabinet of a Democratic president, can hardly be attributed te any ether cause than a desire net te antagonize and offend the enemies of the judge in his own state. That desire would be a proper ene if these enemies were reputable and if theirguev nnce against Judge Thurman was well founded.
