Ilrntli of an Agrd lVeinan, Who Hail Hern h
Hermit Ferlj-Klght Years.
Undoubtedly the strangest character in
Eastern I'cniisylvania dieil en Monday in
the nieuntiins back of Bcruville, Berks
county. This was Sallle Kctner, who was
known as "The Weman Hermit of the
Mountains." She lived alene in a rude leg
hut, away from all sficicty and neighbers.
The tumble-dewn hovel fell of iu own
weight Seme of the falling timberx struck
the woman and she was se badly injured that
bhe died shortly alter being taken from the
wreck. Four of her favorite dogs were also
killed. The old woman was 81 years old and
lived in voluntary exlle in the uame old
dilapidated hut exactly fertv-cight years.
Tlie story of her eccentric life would till a
leek. When she took up her solitary nbode
she was thirty-six years old. People
reincmber her as a Bteut, healthy and comely
woman Tlie story gees that In her youthful
days she foil in inve with a prepossessing
young man, who followed the sea fera living.
He loll with the premise that iu llve years he
would make 1 or his bride He never 10

vlce of another country. He died in a French
prison sixty years age, but the old woman
kept Ills memory ever green, would never
have anything te de with men, and in her
besom when dead was found tlie last letter
from her lever, faded witli age, written lust
before he dleit Tlie woman grew melan
choly, forsook her family and friends, re
ceived a small inheritance from her fattier,
and in 1S17 took up tlie lire of a hermit She
iled at the approach of strancers, was a geed
shot and during tlie winter "season her hut
hung full of game brought down by her
unerring rifle.
She abhorred men, nover spoke te them, if
hhe could help it, and lived In the society of
her cats and dogs, of which she had uiiiRtcen
of the former ami twelve of the latter. Fre
quently she was net seen for months. The
rumor in the neighborhood was that she wis
a miser and hud considerablo meney hid
uway, but nene lias yet been found In tlie
debris of her hut The Hev. D. D. Trexier
will officiate, at her funeral en Thursday.
Her rude life had made her healthy and
fctreng and when she died she was an well
preserved as a woman efllfty.
