AMOMS IIIS NEIUltlORS. He waa Qve tlmea In twenty five years elected and commissioned justice of the ponee, and always ezerelsed his magisterial power te the adjudication and settlement rather than the enoeuragement of litiga tion. Or the dark ways and vain trleka of the modern Justlee and alderman he knew nothing and he wenld have aoerned te re sort te them. He regarded himself In his oflleo as a oensorvator of the publle peaee and of private disputes, and no man waa mere frequently ealled upon or mere gonerully gave satisfaction in arbitrating disputes, Bottling contentions and award Ing equity between man and man. The characterise story Is told by ene of his biographers that some years age he had referred tehlm a knotty oaleulation.vlewed very dlflbrently by parties Inter ested in It, Involving a hopeless complication of tbe aoeounts of two co ce co administraeors, eaeli aetlng en his or her own responsibility, and both oenfusing their rights and duties as administrators, helm and agents. Principals; oeunsel and auditors struggled vainly with it. Out of fourteen foelsoap pages of figures, Jehn Strehra evolved conclusions se dear and equitable that everybody was satisfied. He fixed his fee at (5. He was ene of the first dlroetors of the Farmer's Mutual Insuranoe company ; for thirty-six years its seeretary and its president for several years subsequently. He was president from the beginning of the Dig; Spring & JJoaver Valley turnplke oempany ; was ene of the flrnt dlreoters of the Strasburg national nana ; ana ter six years was treasurer of tbe school beard, Providenee township. During all of this period be was almost cens'intly engaged as administrator, ezcouter, assignee, guir dian and trustoe In tbe settlement of estates and the ezcrcln of ether private trusts. His Integrity was never questioned ; he was accurate, fair and industrious, but In later years, by endorse ments and ether mlsfortunes, his llaanelal affairs became involved and he we oem polled te make an asalgnment for the benefit of his creditors.
