Atlanta, Ga,, Nev. 19, 1884. I have been a oleso observer of events during the great political canvass just ended, I have enestly aimed te farmiliarlze myself with all the questions involved, and abeve all made it a chief point te become ae quainted with the inner workings of party organization as existing here in the Beuth. Watehing olesely the manouvres of the leadera of both great political parties, te see and satisfy myself a. te the truth or untruth, the Jtistice or itijustioe, of what has been said and written en the aubjeet by Northern speakers and North ern papers, and new while I de net lay elaim te any special powers of comprehen sion or superiority of judgment, I must admit that as far as my knowledge of the oendnot of political campaigns gees, we have bad ene of the most quiet that oeuld possibly have been oenduoted, whero Im portant Issues are involved. My object in volunteering my impres sions, is net te gain reputation, but rather te disabuse the minds of these who are net familiar with the Sonth and Southern people, of erroneens Impressions, formed after hearing or reading some of the cam palgn Epeeehes and artleles uttered during the heated contest at the North. I will state that I propose te deal fairly and set in a partisan spirit. I shall give fa ts only and net fancy sketches, nor will I give hear say stories, but only such matters as I have learned by observation and intercourse with the popaiaee. It is new about four years that I have been in this state. I eame here with some of the prejudices natural te all Northern men who visit here for the first time, but was seen eured of theso prejudices, after becoming acquainted with the people, and te-day leek baek with surprise that I oeuld ever have been se egregeusly mis taken with regard te them. Yet was it net pardonable under the circumstances? Uad I net been taught by the press that Southerners were Ku-Klux, assassins and haters of the North and Northerners? Was it net a natural cllect of the training of youth ? The only difference between seme of the Northern party leaders and myself was, that they misrepresented the people here, because it was te their interest te de se, while I, misled by their false preaoh preaeh lng, acted in ignorance of the true charac ter of that people, until I eame te knew thorn better b7 living among them. Of all the glaring slanders uttered by that class of men, is the oharge of unjust dealing with the negre, of in timidatien and coereion at eloo eleo eloe tions and deprivation of auy rights enjoyed by the white man. I( such things exist I have net been able te discover them even with all the pains I have taken during a four year's residence te find an instance whieh would sustain the eharge. If such outrages exist at all, it is net here in Georgia, at least net within a range of country accessible by railroad or mail service from Atlanta. ELECTION DAY IN ATLANTA. I may perhaps be best able te give a dear idea of political affairs in this eity, by givinctny expcrlenca of ene. election day and let that serve as a truthful pioture of all that 1 nave lived through since lam here. After this little sketch, I will leave the reader te judge aa te "intimidation" at the polls. On the morning of November 4, 1 made it my special business te go te the voting place with a determination te "vote early," if I oeuldn't "vote often," and found the passage way se densely paeked with our colored fellow citizens, that I coneluded te wait a few hours until the crowd should thin out. My second at tempt te vete oneo at leaat if J. oeuldn't " vete early," was also fruitless, Later in the day, rather than forego the pleasure of voting at all, I finally deter mined te join the proeession in single file, by falling in the rear with two oelored gentlemen immediately in advanoe of me my rear being seen olesed by auy number of gentlemen of both persuasions, and thus for a long half hour in the rain I moved, iueh by ineh, with the motley throng, until word roaehod us "owl men" from the front, that the polls wero olesed, but that we could go te the oeurt heusa and vete thcre, as the polls would net close there until 0 p. m. ; (this was at 3) ; off te the court heuse then moved the disap pointed freemen of all colors. Anether proeession, singie ille, was joined, extend ing about SOO' feet te the rear and new jammed closely together,ce!orod and white, slowly, very slowly, moved towards the window. It only lacked about twenty minutes of dosing time when I had dis. charged my duty a a loyal citiswt' these great United states, by vetiug for the best man. NOT AN DNKIND WORD. New in all this there may be nothing nnoemmon te the mind of the reader, yet I think I can make it appear that there was (and has been at every oleetion I have ) attended here) something very uncommon te the mind of seme of my JNorthem frlends, when I assure them en the honor of a man who has no selfish end in view, that net ene unkind word, no profanity, no loud and boisterous talking wa heard by me during ail this time. Colored and white alike appoared for the time being te stand en the most friendly relations with oaeh ether, and all seemed equally happy after having exercised the sacred right and duty of voting for their choice, Will any ene give me a parallel oase whieh transpired at any Northern voting placenew who will say that the colored man in Atlanta is restricted in bis rights? Who will say in the face of Bueh faets that the oelored man is disfranchised in Georgia? I hurl baek the charge as a foul elander upon an honorable people, A people who have proven themselves the beat friend of the negre, and for the reason that the norre te them is indisponBible. A people who de net oeurt the negre only about eloetion time and then ignore him the balanee of the time, like our loyal patriots of the North. I think It abent time that such slanders should cease, Thank Ged there seems te be a ray of light dawning even new, and I de sincerely believe that sectionalism has received its death blew, never again te be revived. Let ua all rejoiee and be grateful for a new era of peaee and friendship. Let us hepe that the last seotienal b pee eh ever uttered, was the ene delivered at Augusta, Me., en the 18th of November, 1834, and that from henceforth the mueh maligned Southern people may find their vindication by the almighty force and power et truth : Fer truth crushed te earth will rlse again, The sternal yours of Ged are hers." And I for ene Northerner will, with all roverenoo Bay : Amen, se meto it be. B. J. J. SULLIVAN'S VISITORS. Ibe lamentable feature of these gatherings' of worshippers at the shrlue of the slug god Is the preBonce of boys in throngs. Imagine the burning desire of the little inseala te grew up into prize ilghters I They have gene into training, overy onei of them, as shown by the striding rapid gait with whieh they walk te the tavern from the nearest street car line. An audaoieus urchin asked Sullivan what he ate and drank. "IJIoed, nethin' but bleed." waa the reply, "I drain a boy about your size three times a day." The anxious Inquirer esoaped with no delay t but the words of the illustrious man spread among the lads with pugllls tie aspirations, and they get the further belief somehow that, beef bleed from a neighboring slaughter heuse really com posed most of his dlet. A oensrquence is that they go in numbers te the abattoir in question where the bntohers previde all the bleed called for. The boys take it from a tin cup, while it is yet warm from the slaughtered beasts, and Heme of them are able te gulp down halt a pint without stepping for breath. Net ail of the callers ou Sullivan are rude. The story is told in the tavern of a girl's morning visit. Sbe Bent in her eard. " Shew the duffer up," the champion said without looking at the card. "Tain't no duffer, sir. think net, 'cause it's a girl." Anyhow, I "What's uer sort ? " Daisy." " Rlse her up." " But she said she'd wait in the parlor, if you'd be kind enough te see her thore." Sullivan leafed down te the pallor, no mere than half an hour awakoned from his tipsy sleep, and loomed upon the Btartled vision of as dainty a little lady as ever surrendered her slender figure te the on en on wrapments of fashion. Sue rese and advanced timidly te the giant, whose big, red, brutish face relaxed nene of its oharaeteristio soewl. A day's growth of blaeb beard reughened it, soveral blows in the previous night's contest had left crimson spots, his eyes were bleary and bis olethos dishevelled. "The Church of the Paulist Fathers is te held a fair," the girl slid, and I am en a committee te solicit articles te place en sale. I thought you might be willing te oentributo a few autographs" "A few what?" "Autographs, you kuew your signa tures your name written en slips of paper by yeurself, if you pleaBO. Wiisn Sullivan glowered savacely down en her, with a wicked leer in his eyes and an expression of nausea around his mouth und nose, she wouldn't have been surprised if annihila tion had instantly happened te her. "Of oeurso, Mr. Sullivan, if it would be dlstaseful te you, don't de it," and Bhe shyly retreated baekward, keeping her mild oyes fixed en his, because Bhe had read of that method as the only ene for (getting Bafcly out of a wild beast's oage.
