E, Ileaglaud, 150 strong ; the West Side Merchant's elub, under Marshal M. Fohem, 574 strong, and the Ilardware Trade club, 125 strong, The hardware men carried a large iron brae?, bearing the tign, "X brace for Cleveland," and in tbe rear they dragged a brats cannon. Hazeltine for the murder of Mamie Thorpe, in Baltimore. The de de de fonie called as their first witness Dr. A. B. Hall.et Jamestown, who teitlfled thate had known Haiteltine for eight years. The young man had seemed te him 'the victim of melancholy. Three ether witnesses testified in some what the saine tenor and instanced characteristics of Hazeltlnea molanehely. Mrs, Susan Hazeltine, mother of the prisoner, then took the stand and testified that her son had been melancholy from babyhood. '8he had always 'feared be would commit suicide, and he oneo took merphia with suleidal Intent. He was subject te serious spells of unconscious ness, the last of whleh occurred when he was about 13 years of age. She did' net knew that her son drank or had evil habits. This olesed the testimony for the defense. After recess the state called D. P. Hoff Heff man te robuke the defense of insanity. He had seen Hazeltine almost daily since his arrest and ebserved no indication of insanity. Dr. Jehn Merris testified hypothetieally. that the accused was sane.
