THBKE VIHrVD Of TMK FRUULKM. alt MM of an Important Secial Btndy Pre sentedAre Women Naturally the inferiors et Went r. K. Carey in Poptember Princeton Review. We shall begin our examination by briDKlDR ourselves dirpetly In front of the three great classes of opinions whleh are entertained by tbe tbeuhtful people of Ibis community. We ean then leek the problem squarely in the face. Firit consider these who held te thp ex treme conservative view. They elaim that women are by rjature and oeustruotion the physical and Intellectual inferiors of men, although tbey peatess certain peculiar powers which lit them espcelally for the peculiar duties of womanhood whleh 'they are called upon te perlerm. They assert that matriage and the bearidg and rearing of ebildren consumes the major part of woman's rnrriries, and is and should be the meht important, and for the best pat tei her life the aini-le, interest of her being. That she is net lit for general work, and her en. gagement In any business competition is bound te prove a failure and Invariably te put in tetil the happiness of the home, and the health of herself ami her children, That stone marriage is the supposable and proper future of all young wemen, it is wrong for their lives te be built or tbeir characters te be shaped in any way whleh will uuQt them in any degree for leading happy and healtby married lives, beat ing strong children, aud educating them te the age of manhood or womanhood. They assert that it is foolish te be led astray in this matter by dwelling en the compara tively small contingent et women who de net marry, or te amend the great natural laws for thorn which will injuriously affect the mass of mankind. That the real strength of women lies in the personal in. lluenee which a elmple and innocent life possesses ever rude and wieked men, and that their development should proceed in this dircotien. That there is no mere beautiful ambition for a woman, after that of bringing up useful and moral eitlzans, thau tbe especial privilege she has of brightening the home aud alleviating tbe cares and sorrows of life for her husband, brother, father, or as the case may be. That the sum of the new philosophy is te dieplaee women from the pedestal en wbieb a long chain of civilizing influences has placed them, and te expose them again te the rnde sttuggle with the hardships of the world for whieh they are un. fitted and from whieh they will isue as befute, haggard and worn in health, and little and despised and dishonored bitere men. The general conclusion is that all the modern tendencies toward granting women the best advantages of odeoalion,4dmittlng them te industrial pur suits, and encouraging them te tbe pur suit of aimau'xl'porsenaTatnbitiobS oella- J tiral te marriage is falsely, latally, and wiekedly auuinst nature, and, while pre-ut-dltiK te seek their material elevation, will certainly result in their degradation ; and that it is opposed te the welfare of women and the soelety whose health and bappiuess in te largely dependent en tba health aud bappinees of its wives and mothers. Ne Mal iefqnallty IIetwsn the Sexes. The extreme wiug of the new philosophy holds te exactly opposite prepositions. They contend that the apparent inequality btitween men aud women results entirely lrem education aud inheritance. That their iutillietual and physical possibilities aie in every respect equal, and that tine will seen demonstrate this truth, after u few deeades of natural life and sound mental training. That the apparent physi cal limitations en woman's lite are the re sult of a long uegleet of the simple laws of health, aud thut the bearing of children and ether natural processes need net in a healtbystate of tbe coiiKtitutien efiube eitber danger or Inconvenience. That women will probably lese some share of their physical beauty from a contact with tbe things of the world, and pei baps most el their pretty aud ebildish ways, but that tbe less will be mere than made up te them in the sound sense und general in formation which .they will be forecd te acquire. That material independence is essential te tbe full development of char acter, aud that personal responsibility In tbe matter of time aud talents is impossible with most people without steady eccupa tien, mat marriage is alter an only a hnppy accident, as tbe preponderance of women ever men tends te prove, acd that martiage should be treated as a collateral and net a first aim with women. That women at present utterly negleet the development of peisenal eharacter In their chase of huebands, and that it is a shame lul state of affairs whieh se often requires women te marry as a means of support, whieh is new their necessity in the majority of cases. That unless women encage in lucrative occupations they must either starve, depend upon cbaiity, or marry. They prefer marriage. That the present employments of women are unfitted for tbem and are highly unremunerative, and that they should be granted access te the best opportunities for self support. The general conclusion is that the present tendeney is a thoroughly healthy one aud that the end of the development will be erasure of all social distinctions between the sexes. The middle VI. w et the Uae.tlen. The third elass of opinion takes a middle ground. It ineludes men and women who are tee fair-minded te be blind te the great enoumbraueea whieh are new plaeed upon the development of tbe female char acter, aud who admit that it la lowering te women te be foreed te depend entirely en men for their pecuniary support, and that it gives men a power ever them which is hurtful te all the best interests of se elety. 'Ihey fraukly admit that women would gaiu wisdom, praotieal habits of work, aud oeusolenoe in the matter of time and talents by engaging In steady pursuits. They admit that tbe oapaelty of tbe minds of women te receive the highest form of intellectual training is no longer open te discussion, and that In all possible eases women should be granted the best opper Unities of eduoatien. They say that the fact that their lives will be happier for it, and the smallest duties of their homes hotter performed for it, is suflbleut war rant for this opinion. They are by no means persuaded that a very high degree of mental training is beyond her pbysieal powers et enduranee. They cheerfully recognize me laet mat women are eileu called upon te earn their own living by force et oircumstanees, some being wltb wltb witheut oppeituuity for marriage, and tbnt it is a cruel hardship that se many hindrances should be plaeed in their way. But, en the ether baud, they urge that it Is quite absurd te say that the differ ence between the sexes will ever be obliterated, nr that it la enlv the result of an unhealthy development, or that such I distinctions as de new exist will ever be explained away as tbe result of artillelal oeuditious of soeiety, or that they are any mere contrary te nature than the relative positions et tha sexes among tbe lower animals. That it is impossible te avoid the re I issue that tbe vast majority of women de marry at about twenty years of age, and that by marriage they are te a eertsin extent redaead te dependent state and unfitted for industrial "oecupa. tlens That this faet of itself will always be enough te diminish their average Industrial value, and there is no possible hope of its ever being otherwise ; leaving ent of account tbe very serious considera tion as te whether their constitutional struoture even before marriage does net impose eertain restrictions and limitations en oempetlon with men. That the health of women is of mere vital importance than that of men, and that it is a crlrr.e for them te imperil it for thn sake of pecuniary in dependenoe. That the prlee of suoeeisful competition Is often the less of health, aud that therefore it is proper that the mother should be spared as far as porsible the labor and exeitement of industrial compe tition. In general the important rules of soeioty oenoerning women should conform te the established faet that the office of bearing and rearing children is the fair share of women in the distribution of the world's economy. KeMintranut of the tilalnes, Washington Letter te the Philadelphia Times It is welt known in Washington among these well acquainted with the present secretary of state and his family and Mr. Blaine and his, that the latter have never Telt kindly towards the former sinee Mr. Frelinghuysen sucoeoded Mr. Blaine as seeretary of state. Neither Mr. or Mrs. Blaine have ever, as the writer knows, taken the slightest pains te oenooal this ill feeling. Mrs. Blalue is always espe cially frank in mentioning openly her dis like of any one. Mere than ene person who was at a dinner gives In January, 1883, by President Arthur te members of his cabinet and a few ethers has told me hew openly both Mr. and Mrs. Blalne, whe were present, showed that they felt ag. grieved with President Arthur and also with Mr. Blaine's successor as bead of the department of state. The dinner oc curred net long after the succession had been effected. Mr. BUIne sat opposite the president, and the latter, with an evident ilesite te make himself agreeable te Mr. Blaine, addressed him several times across the table as "Mr. Secretary." The first time he did it, Mr. Blaine, as my infor mant, who was present, said, looked an noyed, and, when it was 'repeated, said te the lady next him : "If he calls me that again I'll take him up." "Oh, don't," pleaded the lady ; "don't notice it." But, deaf te her wise oeuneo', Mr. Blaine, the next time the president called him, "Mr. Beeretary," eleetrified the wbole table by exelaiming with acrimony, "Hew ean you eall me by that title of whleh you have deprived me?" With consumate taet, tbe president answered : "Oh, I thought oneo a secretary, always a seeretary like once a general, always a general,' 'once a governor, always a governor." Bat even this diplomatic reply did net dissipate the unpleasant feeling, and mere than one who was present has said te the writer t " It was the most uncomfortable dinner I ever attended, owing te Mr. and Mrs. Blaine's evident desire te make it se."
