J HUticftstet JntrlUgenccr. i MONDAY HVBN1NO, JUNE 10, 10S4. A BtUH HAHHICK SHUT. M Ret Hr " lI Ul Attempt MHUHIIWi Jee Drinker, a member of ene of Lhe Utett families lu Susquehanna county, White standing In front of Sparks' tlniK tore, ou Main street, Montrese, draw a melrer and shot three titne lu rapid avMMftleti at William II. Cooper, ttie tanker, who wan en the pavement near kin. Cooper foil bleeding te tbe Dide Walk. Atthe third shot C. M. Cramlatl prang upon Drluker, and, with a neli directed blew knocked him soesolcss. Mr. Cooper was carried into the drug store, where hasty examination dttmleacd the faJt that two builds had entered his body, ene in tbe lewer part of his back asd tbe ether in tbe hip. II e was taken home. Drinker waa carried into Decker's stere BDOOsacleui from Crandall'fl blew and waa afterward removed te the jail. There U be reason which ean be given for tbe sheeting, but it is supposed the would-be assassin was aotuateu in his orime through tome trouble about money affaire. Drinker waa sever considered very bright, al though he is net thought te be insane. Mr. Cooper had something te de in settling up tbe estate of Drinker's parent, wne died aome years age, and it is supposed he held aome spite against Cooper in con cen con nectien with that transaction. There is a rumor en the Rtreet that Drinker drank semething from a bettle supposed te be poison bofero doing the sheeting. II e remained unconscious about half an hour after the shoetinc and Biuoe then baa been vomiting froely. The physi cian who ia attending him says hu will be all right in the morning. Mr. Cooper is very dangerously wound ed, but the pbytieians cannot say whether bis wounds aie ncecfsarily fatal or net, and cannot dtcide until after the c licet et the shook has pissed off. Mr. Cooper's daughter was married last Thursday te Mr. Oscar Keen, of New Jersey, aud the tragedy oemes doubly hard at this time. The wcueded man Is ene of the most prominent residents of Moutreso, and a gentleman of wealth. Jeseph Drinker, tbe prisoner, is the aele remaining heir of the "old Drinker estate," inherited by his fattier aud suc ceeding te the son, who is 40 years of age. Later Particulars. Drinker has fully recovered from the effects of the drug which he took at the time of the sheeting. He says it was ohleroform and laudanum aud that he fully Intended killing himself after killing Mr. Cooper. When asked why he did the sheeting, he said that his sister's wrongs must be avenged ; that she was unjustly incarcerated m the insane asylum ami that she waa perfectly saue and was sufferiug illegally. A sister of Drinker's had been impns oned for several years lu au iusanu asylum, film in new in the HarrisburL' as v him. There waa an Inquiry as te her ma.iuity a I vnnr nr Ivn !iti. ami nhn wilh brought I before the oeurt there, aud, upon bciug doelarod insane, was taken back te the asylum. Drluker does net claim that Mr. Cooper had any hand iu her incarceration, but that he remained passive and -did net interfere when he might have done some thing te roleaso her. Personally he has nothing against Mr. Coepsr. When asked if he is net sorry new for the uet, he replied : " I don't rejolee in the suffering of Mr. Cooper. I wish 1 had killed him immedi ately, but I feelthat I have dene my duty. I am sorry for Mr. Coei cr, but some one had te pay the penalty ler the tuifleriue of ether," thou, with hU eyes glaring floreely and with a tragiu gesture, he exuluimcd, " Jly sinter lu been illegally wreuged, aud I have avenged her." IIe says that he had fully determined upon the act long age, and that if be had been unable te kill Mr. Cooper he would have killed someone olse. There is no doubt in thn minds of these who have seen him that Drinker is iuaaue. His acqaittiug Mr. Cet.per of any part iu putting his sis ter iu thu asylum, of any net or wrong whatever, except ill at the bunker did uel interlore, aud his claiming that if he ha 1 net killed Uoeper lie would buve killed some oue else, taken touethor with lit aotleus befere aud sitioe the Hlioeliug, all go te show a diseased mind.
