"When a loetnre, by a oempolont poraen, cec away from the beaten trnek te take lis Inte new Holds of human Interest, Hint is ft decided fcftln te the public. When, lu addition te this, the lecturer has hlinself visited the strange places he describes and taken accurate vlews of the objects he shows when be has been upon the spot and speaks from his personal knowledge lils iliscourse has fanre additional value And ospceially is this the case when the main subject fa entirely new te the great mass of the poeplo. Of this description was Mr. Edward L. Wilsen's lllustrated loeturo, "The Taking of Petra," delivered and exhibited at the Aoademy of Music en Monday night. It was a rovelatiou te most of the large audloneo present en that oeoaBlon. Of oeurso thcre wero these present who had heard ofjer read of Petra ; but there must have beeu very few who wero prepared for eueh a realizing sonae of that strance place. It is a ruined city along stroets that are sunk doeply in gorges, or rather crovleos, in the rugged mountains of the Dlble " land of Edem," and a city whero the temples, palaces and burial nlaces. and nearly all the structures of which it is composed, are chiselled or hewn out of the solid took. It docs net appear that there were any buildings there te be used as dwellings, the Arab inhabi tants of the country probably dwellinc in tents then as thoyde lu our day. The ene great characteristic of the place is that its raouumeuts, temples, circuses, can ' tics, forts, palaces, or whatever they may have been, wero, with but very few ex. coptlens, hewn out of the reek by chisel or axe. What people oxecutcd these marvelleus aud oelo8s.il works colos sal in the enormous labor they do de uiandcd Is net known. The time in the world's history when the work was dene is equally unknown. As te these matters thore is no recorded history. I'etra is mentioned in the Boek of Kings under the name of Selati, which is said te mean a reek, as Pctra itself docs in Urcck. It is tnoutleucd by Strabo aud Pliny, Josephus, Eusebeus aud Joreiuo ; but tione of these tell us about tbe poeplo or the age te whieh the reek temples aud meuumeuts are te be rcferrcd. It was the capital of Arabia Petnui, that is mountainous Arabia, en that side el the desert, aud is the " Selah " which Amaziab, king of Judab, took in the war, when he "slew of Edem in the Valley of Silt ten thou, sand." Strabo says it was the metropolis of the Nabatliieaus, " shut in by rocks reuud nbeut, but within havifig copious fountains for" the supply of water aud the iirigatien of gardens." It appears te have geno out of sight of history from about the sixth century of our era te lulte modern years. Jehn Ludwig Uurkhardt appears te have been the first modern writer and traveler te rovlve the memory of the place. This was about 1322, in his "Travels in Syria,' when he sought te identify the wenderful ruins in Wady Moesa with the ancient Pctra. Bome few travellers have succeeded iu getting thore, but very few indeed. Our fellow townsman, Edward L. Wilsen, who was the photegraphist of the Centennial exhibition, is ene of thorn. By dint of considerable personal risk, and ue little strategy among the suspicious and jealous Arabs of the vicinity, he get te Petra iu 1832 with a caravan of camels and horse3 bearing his cameras and ether photographic eutUt, and a tmall train if auxiliaries. The ruins are far out of the way of ordinary caravan travel (about ten days' travel, we believe, through the most barren and difficult country), aud the Arabs resolutely resist every attempt te explore them by reason of the tradition that they conceal great treasures. Mr. WiUeu did get there, however, aud we imvn tlin irmiiil r.Hiilt. i 11 hi tllilmnln.iteil pictures and in the narratlve with which I ue accompanies mom. ue lanes ur nuui nuui ence with him through the Journey, Inte the narrow ineuutaln dettles, through the sunken streets, and shows them the sur prising remains of a city almost uukuewn te civilized man. The forms, dimension?, proportions, ornarnentatiou aud grace of the structures delight the observor aud the hearer at every stae of progress. Thore hit str.iuge mingliug of at) lea of of architecture Of oeureo every ene is ready te tlud architecture of the Egyptian type us sccu in pyramidal forms and iu ebelisks ; but who could expect te llnd Corinthian facades of the must graceful forms iu such a place ? Yet llieee nb jund aud are the most promluert objects iu the photographic views, oxcept these ile ile ile voted te burial purposes. In the nbstuioe of recorded history with regard te these structures, the observer begins te doubt whether we get our Groeiau colonnades, pediments aud entablature B from thu peo peo poe plo who inhabited this Arab wilderness of barrren rocks, or whether that ueble style of architecture was carried thcre by means that ue ene can new umlcrstntui. And it is te be remembered alw.iyu that these structures, the camparaMvely well proserved remains of which we are shuffti, were made (net built) as ue ether Grecian tomples wero ever oust met .1 -.huir fronts, columns aud all bj'ui It vn ire.u the natural rejlc stiudm in p! iej, ami thelr interiors excavated by the same means. We caunet go further into dutails, except te add that the rock is sandstone of many colors red, purple, yellow, bluish green, and ethers in a variety of shades. This gives unusual attractiveness te the pictures In all eases where the natural colors are iutreduccd. As already said, thu lecture is a revelatien of n world comparatively unknown te nrclm:olegy, architecture, eth nolegy, geegraphy aud goneral sciouce. it furnishes materials net eulv for the studv of the amnt, but of most interesting in struction te the popular mind. Petra aud the country round about it are impohsible places, in thelr present condition, te sup. pert life in a uumoreus population ; and yit large numbers of people must have been thore for oeveral generations, or thone wenderful works could net have construct ed. Who wero they, aud when was this iiirprising eity cut In the solid ruck '. "Aie yen lonely le nluht MUi Ada " "Mi elrl 1 wbll 1 were leuellnr."
