Seed Leaf, Sumatra and Havana ler the Week KudlDg Saturday, August 25, lO A. M. U. S. Tobacco Journal, Business improved this week. '82 Wisconsin (whatever (reed there was of it) sold swimmingly at excellent fig ures, leaving heavy profits in the hands of r.ellcrs. After all of this stock will have left the market 'S2 Pennsylvania and '82 New Yerk state will have no competitor. '82 Connecticut, as a whole, has sunk into line with common Ohie. We partic ularly request buyers of leaf te oxamine this stock personally, and net te take our views as an absolute guide. Helders of this tobacco are protesting against our emphatic condemnation of the same. They claim that there is a sufficiency of fine leaf, and that though the seconds of the crop, as a rule, de net burn well the wrappers are faultless in that respect. We examined this tobacco here as well as in the country numerous times. In our judgment seven eights of it is trash, and all the pretests of interested or disinterested parties will net make us think and write otherwise of it. Trash it is, and trash it will be sweat it as you may. The comparative diminutive num ber of cases of fine tobacco in the '82 Ohie crop, leave, as we have mentioned before, the '82 Pennsylvania and the '82 New Yerk state the only two crops lit for manipulation into fine cigars. It is calcu lated that both crops contain only about 30,000 cases of really fine grades. Te the casual observer it will appear strauge that under these conditions there is net a rush for these crops, and that prices de net rule exceedingly high. This ie eafciiy explained. People are afraid te take held of them in large quantities. The Pennsylvania crops during the past several years have changed from geed te bad when the cold weather set iu ; the state, iu ruauy instances, lest its rich silky nature during the same peried. Tliorcfero, though there exists an undis guiscd anxiety en all sides te sccure geed tobacco, no heavy transactions are taking place. If nothing interferes with the fer mentation of the two crops mentioned, high prices will be realized for the samu. '81 Pennsylvania is looming up once tnore. The failure of the '82 Connecticut crop and the prespective shortage of geed tobacco gives medium tobacco a new chance for an outlet. There certainly was mere inquiry for '81 Pennsylvania last week than in any ether vcek for the past six months. Over 500 cases changed hands. Helders of Sumatra are like Micawbar, waiting for something te turn up. Buyers let Sumatra have e: late tarir.u up iu such small numbers that holders have ha ha ha ceme exceedingly nervous. They nesi fear no losses; the cessation in demand for Siimatia is temporary only. Should the :82 Pennsylvania and '82 state preve de ficient in line wrappers, there will be a cctamble for Sumatra no doubt, and prices will sheet up rocket like. Even with the best results in these two crop?, there is net enough of fine seed leaf in the coun try tocause Sumatra le become a drug in tha market. Prices for the same tray net ircrease natcriully in such a case ; but it has a strong foothold iu the country, and in many quai'srs the finest of seed leaf is nrt cDii&"'iercd a substitute. Such cases, hevvev.--, have no parceplible bearing iil)rui the seed leaf market. The sales of the week were as fellows : Pennsylvania, cren '81, 500 cases at 9 te Ida Crep '82, COO cates, at 18c. Wisconsin, crop 'S2, 400 cases, p. t. Connecticut crop '81, 200 case.0, wrap- iters, at 22 te 30c. Ohie, crop '82, 400 cases, at G te 9j. Sumatra, sales 130 bales, price uu changed. Havana, market improving. Sales !00 bales. Pricc3 unchanged. Tlie FiiUadeliUIa Market. Leaf. Seed Leaf Packers and dcalerS of ciar leaf are doing a much better business than usual at this season . Tliote who packed '82 aud have sold, wish they had mero It is going off much faster than expected, which is owing te its opening no very much be yond the usual condition. The '81 Penn sylvania is partaking of the fever and moving in nice lets. Prices se far obtaiu ebtaiu tained are very satisfactory. Helders are willing te fell at low figures, because they bought low. Sumatra is again moving lively. Con siderable is coming in and going out. Havana Quite a quantity of Grst-class Havana has been sold this week at the uuial price. Of the former thcie have been sold seme 300 case, ene let of GG and anether of 100, the balance in small quantities. In '82 the Kale will feet, up between 80C and 1,000 case.7. Among them was 101 cases by Dr. Wcist, el Akron.te Gumpert Bres., of Philadelphia.at figures in and about 15 The balance was sold at private terms The '81 prespests are looking up. Theso who have been examining it lately find it much improved and holders are conse quently in better spirits. As we have said said before, the quantity of it held is net very large and though the sales are net large the quantity is being Bteadily diminished. Of '80 there is com cem pantively none held in the county ; it has in a slew way been picked up. Sampling of '82, gees en, but net te a very great extent. The coming month will be the time of the rush and every packer will want te be first. Prospects for the growing crop are net as premissing as we would like te see them ; of course there are seme fine let?, but thcre is a large quantity of peer ones. The present dry weather with cool nights is net the kind of weather for cither the early or late growth?. We new want a few geed rains and warm weather. A geed portion has been housed and seme little is cured. Among this we hear et white vein and heavy leaf. Tobacco is beginning te figure extonsiv extensiv ily in our courts. We notice the first two cases in this week's common pleas are tobacco cases. A. GREAT FIBK UAQI2IO. Over Thirty million root or Lumber and Many Dwellings Horned at Wllllamapert. A dispatch from Williamsport early this morning says : A great conflagration, which has new been raging for several hours and has destroyed an immense amount of property, broke out at 6 o'clock ou Mon day night and was still burning fiercely this morning. The fire started in Finley, Yeung & Ce.'s saw mill and seen spread te the lumber yards. At 6 o'clock the fire had assumed alarming proportions and had get beyond all hope of control by the local department, aided by the citizens genrally, and aid was summoned from Sunbury, Watertewn, Leck Haven and ether towns. Before 10 o'clock aid had arrived from Watertown, Loek Haven, Sunbury and Milten, but by that time the fire had get beyond all control and was burning fiercely with the firemen pewerless even te check its course. At that time the yards of Finley, Yeung & Ce., Payne & Ce., C. Rhen and H. Merriman it Sens were all en tire. The fire had then reached upper Vine strcet en the north and about a dozen dwelling houses were in flames. The greatest excitement prevailed among the peeple in the threatened districts and hundreds of persons were engaged in re moving household effects. Though there was no wind blowing, the fire burned with great fierceness, the intense heat arising from the huge piles of burning lumber driving the fit omen befere it. At half past 11 the fire was still burning as fiercely as ever and seemed te be gain ing headway rapidly. AH the henses en both sides of Susquehanna street for the distance of a block were cone and it was then raging along upper Vine street. An aggregate estimate of the lumber destreyed placss it at 23,000,000 feet, and the aggregate less will reach something ever half a million dollars. The heaviest sufferers are Finley, Yeung & Ce., Payne & Cochran and II. Merriman & Sen. At midnight the fire was still burning, but wa3 believed te be pretty nearly under control. The firemen had concentrated their efforts te provent its spread west. A large number of dwelling houses en Vine and Susquchauna streets have been destroyed. At one o'clock it is believed that the fire is under control. The tarritery burned ever is about sixteen acres in extent, all of which was comparatively filled with lum bcr. The firemen from thi3 and ether places are still gallantly fighting te prevent the spread el tlie flames and thair work is beginning te tell. Much suffering wiil result among the peer who were burned out. It is net known accurately hew many dwellings were burned, but they will number at least a scote. The fire is a ter rible blew te this city, as it will threw scveral hundicd men out of employment right in the busiest part of the season. It is rjpertcd, but net definitely known, that a boy was burned te death. A later estimate places U:e aggregate less of lum ber at thirty-five million feet. Unless the wiud changes the (iie can new ba con trolled. Tltr 1IONAPAIIT1STS. l'eiittC'i) Sigi'illcance of the Kecent Banquet in l'ttilH. The annual banquet of the Benapartistr, held iu Paris, leceutly, was significant in the ignoring of Prince Napeleon and the laudation of Prince Victer. The latter, though net, of courre, expected te attend, as he is serving iiis year in the army, was, figuratively speaking, raised en the buck lers of his paitisans and picclaiincd Nape leenV. Piinca Napeleon's organs have been condemning the whele affair, and even lcpresenting that the banquet had been get up by police sjiics or government hirelings. Tnore were repeated cheers for "Priuce Victer" and for "The Emperor," which were treated as synonymous terms ; while a piopesal te raise a cheer for Prince Napeleon was received with general cries of "IfenI" Iu like manner Prince Napeleon's uauie was absent from the list of toasts, which included the Empress Eugenie, "still aud evor for us the Em press of the French," Prince Victer and M. de Cassagnae. The two sons of M. Amigues presided, aud, without naming Prince Napeleon, suggested that he occu pied an ambiguous pedt'in by being a candidate for M. Grevy's seat as well a3 for the imperial crown. They hinted that when Prince Victer had attained his effective majority, by having completed his military duties, he would assert his claim, aud that seme nesial peril would oblige even the Ilspublicad.i te resort te a plebiscite, whereupon the prince would offer hiraself te France. They scouted any idea of a compiemiso with the republic, such as Prince Napeleon was said te con template, but which was contrary te the imperialism traditions. At the dinner there were 550 guests, mostly of the lewer middle class, and forming family groups men, women and children, and even infants in arms. About as many mero persons were admitted te the garden and listened te the spceches A handful of these seemed te Jcremists, and caused a little disorder. Popular Gathering. The atieudance at Camp Geary, Gettys burg was increased yesterday. In the morning the Eighty eighth regiment, Pennsylvania volunteers dedicated three tablets, ene iu Zoigler's grove, near Tarry town read, one where Gen. Hancock was weuuded, aud ene en Seminary Ridge. Gen. Geerge W. Gill, of Camden, N. J., delivcd the address. The Ninety-first Pennsylvania vohiutcers dedicated a mon ument en Little Hound Tep, near where Generals Weed and Vincent fell, Jeseph Sinex, who commanded the regiment during the engagement delivered an ad dress.
