' SHIKT REFORM. naclUaet tae Ceartrtaed Statch and cotton Abomination. Rnatim Journal. Within the last two year signs of a movement hue been noticed which seems likely te cause a complete revolution m u ntf nf snaimAT attire for men. and daring the present season it has gathered se much strength and volume that its im portance cannot with justice be any. innrar ignored. The introduction of the flannel shirtasa substitute for the rigid hnanmjul oetion and linen abomination. which has iltherte been regarded as the test of respeetabDlty, has, already met with considerable favor, and gained a large measure of that popularity which it assuredly deserves. It is singular that residents in this climate of intense summer heats have net long age seen that a radical change in their attire was necessary, aad that, as far as all occasions of business or pleasure at this season of the year are concerned, the starched shirt might with geed reason be packed away in the same chest which contains the winter overcoat and furs. Net a single apology can be made for this garment during the summer. It does net adapt it self te the languorous attitude into which the human figure allows itself te droop during the heated term ; the leading of its besom with starch renders it impervious te the air, the unnamed portions which depend below the waist' are of abnormal length and net easily te be disposed of when that very necessary article of attire, the trousers, is drawn ever them, while the rigidity of the cellar and cuffs is simply unendurable by any man who has a proper idea of comfort. Fer state occasions, the formal dinner and the giddy whirl of the dance if people must Indulge in such festivities during the sum met the expansive white shirt front is net out of place, although we must confess that the most enjoyable ball we ever at tended was at a large seashore hotel, where the young men for the most part appeared in kniokerbeckers, flannel shirts and loose jackets of the pedestrians and campers out, or the white duek and blue uniforms of the yachtsmen, te danee with the ladies in their cool muslins and lawns. Where the conventional shirt of civiliza tion falls short in the balance, the merit of the flannel shirt preponderates. It sits lightly and flexibly upon the figure, con forms itself te the movements of the wear er, permits the cooling currents of the air te meet the body, and cherishes instead of ehafes the neck and wrists in all of which respects it is directly opposed te its rival whieh is about as comfortable in summer as a shirt of chain mail or the steel breast plate of a mediaevial warrior. In the mat ter of pieturesqueness, also, the flannel shirt has superior elaims. m an a Hew a MUilaaacre raid Vp. A funny story is going the rounds at the expense of Washington's millionaire and philanthropist, W. W. Corcoran. It appears that Mr. Corcoran chartered a t-pecial ear for " self and party " te take tuem te White Sulphur Springs, paying $80. When the car was switched eS from the Midland read at Charlettesville te the Chesapeake read the new conductor came around for tickets. Mr. Corcoran refused te pay en the ground that he had chartered the ear for the springs. The conductor explained that the Pennsylvania railroad had no control ever that line, and that unless $80 was forthcoming he would have te side-track the car. 'I will net pay another cent,' said Mr. Corcoran, who would have said the same if the amount had been 80 cents, " and I will spend a million dollars before I will be imposed en in this manner." " Who are you, any hew?" asked the conductor. "W. W. Corcoran, of Washington, sir," was the stately reply of the twenty-time million aire. " Well, sir," was the rejeiner, " i you are Mr. Corcoran you can better afford te spend $2,000,000 than I can lese my place." He said he would telegraph his manager, however, for instructions. At the next station the reply came indeisiug the conductor. This was shown Mr. Cor coran, and he was further informed that the car would be side tracked right there in the weeds unless the far j was paid. The millionaire growled and swore and threat ened and paid the money. Swindles and Swindlers. An important opium smuggling case is new en trial at San Francisee, and in con nection therewith an official of the treas ury department stated yesterday afternoon te a reporter that "during the last ten years ever $6,000,-000 dollars worth of epinm has been smuggled into that pert."
