TUB COM DIT t OF THK CHOPS. wv.it.t iitoeru rrem All Seettei " Heavy Bnlufalls Clever M a Fertil izer Care et Orchard, c A stated meeting of the Lancaster ooun eoun oeun ty agricultural society was held in their room in City hall, yesterday afternoon. The following named members were present : H. G. Rush, president, West Willow ; Calvin Cooper. Bird in-HaDd ; Jeseph F. Witmer, Paradise ; Henry M. Engle, Marietta; James Weed, Little Britain ; S. P. Eby, city ; Casper Hiller, Conestoga ; J. G. Rush, West Willow ; M. D Kendig, Creswell ; C. L..Hunseck er, Manbeim township ; P. S. Reist, Lititz : Jehn 31. Btehman, Rohrerstown ; J. H. Buckwalter. Salisbury ; W. S. Her bhey, Chickies ; Ephraim 8. Hoever, Mau heim township ; Jehnsen Miller, War wick ; H. R. Fulton, city ; Levi S. Rcist, Oregon ; Dr. Bellinger, city. Calvin Cooper, from the committee ap pointed te visit and represent the society at the late meeting of the trustees of the state agricultural college, read a long printed report of his experiences en route and at the college Crep Reports. Reports en the condition of the crops being called for, several fanners respond ed, all of whom gave substantially the same testimony, namely, that the nay crop was one of the largest ever gathered, but that the grass was tee rank te make hay of tie best quality ; the wheai was well filled and well gathered in; and yielded from 18 te Se bushels per aero ; the eats was generally geed, but in a lew localities affected by smut ; early potatoes very geed and the potato bee'.l) net troublesome; the corn growing rank, and 3lew in Bhoet ing eais, and that which was planted en hillsides badly washed by the heavy rains ; young clever very luxuriant, second crop clever very slew in coming into bloom and a rather peer prospect of seed ; pasture abundant and of fine quality ; tobacco equal te any ever grown, but in some lo calities badly cut by hail and damaged by high winds, and in low, wet grounds, somewhat affected by rust ; apples gener ally very peer, the fruit dropping off and being greatly injured by insects ; pears premise a full crop, but many varieties are badly cracked ; peaches in some localities very geed and in ethers scarce, the crop being en the whole below an average ; grapes a full crop, but suffering from mil dew in some localities ; plums in some localities pretty geed, but generally a fail ure, retting before they ripened. The rainfall at Marietta for June was reported at C G 10 and for July A inches. At Cresswell, Maner township, the lain fall for June rras reported at C 4 5 inches. The president remarked that a year or two age when we were suffering from dreuths, the trouble was attributed te the cutting away of our forests and it was beiieusly proposed that the planting f forests would seen become necessary and that legislation would be required te save them. The great rainfalls of the present season would seem te disprove the theory that dreuths were caused by cutting away the forests. A discussion sprang up as te the proper time te plow down clever as a manure. Seme thought it should ba plowed under when green and juicy, aud ethers that it was better te wait until it bad gene te seed ; but all agreed that clever was a valuable fertilizer whether green or ripe. 8. P. Eby wanted te knew if there was no remedy for the retting of plums before they were ripe, and Casper Hiller an swered that there was net ; the retting being due te atmospheric conditions ever which man had no control. H. M. Engle agreed that the atmosphere bad much te de with retting the fruit, but believed that the trouble might in a great measure be overcome by selectiug certain varities of plums that are net effected by the atmos phere. He had seen two varieties of plums growing side by side one of which retted and the ether matured. The question whether it would be ad visable te cultivate southern varieties of apples for winter use was discussed, and it was agreed by all that our native apples are preferable especially the Yerk Im perial, the Winesap, the Pennock, the Smokehouse, Smiths' Cider and the Remanite. A rambling discussion ou apple culture followed, participated in by Casper Hiller, Henry 31. Engle, S. P. Eby, Epb. S. Hoever, J. G. Rush, Jeseph F. Witmer and ethers. Seme of the meas ures proposed were te cultivate the orch ards by frequent plowing aud manuring ; te wash the trunks of the trees with soap suds or lye ; te turn the swine and chickens into the orchards te eat the wormy fiuit apd the insects that infest the trees ; te plant the trees only in clay loam ; te use grafts from young and healthy trees only, and te see that the young trees from the nursery have an abundance of geed roots ; te leek out for new and valuable varieties of seedlings, aud te disseminate them in lieu et old aud deteriorated varieties. Mr. Hoever suggested that the coddling moth might be trapped by placing lights with a tub of water under them in the orchards or building fires that would attract and kill the insects. Mr. Engle thought it would be 'ectter te carefully examiue the trees and pick off anddcstiey all impeifcct fruit. And lVRRirlent. ttnsh thought that " ., , j ... .... smaller orchards with mere attention . given them would be the best means of securing geed fruit. On motion of Mr. Cooper the secretary wasrjetified te be present hereafter at nil meetings of the society, or in case of ab sence te send te the meeting the minutes of the last preceding meeting. Mr. Eby asked, " What de moles cat ?" and Casper Hiller answered that he had fceu many upheavals by moles in gardens and flower beds, but he had never known them te eat or injure bulbs or plants. But they de a geed deal of damage by upheav ing the ground and by making safe paths for mice which de injure the plants. Messrs. Hiller, Eule, R-ist and Eby exhibited before the beciety some fine apples and pears. A committee was ap pointed te test and report en them and awarded te Mr. Hiller a premium for the largest collection and te Mr. Engle a premium for the best plate of fruit. Mr. Eby read a newspaper article rela tive te fertilizers, which provoked some discussion by Messrs. Hiller, Cooper, Engle and Rush. Adjourned. HPEUIJLi. mttjtjjts. Buchu-paiba."
