A B.1KK CASHIER'S S.VCIIlj. ltuid Attempt te Kote Themas .1. Sielili at Hobekeu. Themas ,1. Smith, cashier of the first national bank of Oraugc, N J., went te New Yerk en Saturday morning and drew $12,000, the balance due the bauk en the clearances el the week. This money, i n greenbacks', was deposited in a small sat chel, aud with it Mr. Smith started for the bank at Orange, lie crossed the Bar clay street ferry in the beat which connects with the 10:25 train et the Delaware & Lnckawanua read from Hoboken. Arriv ing in Hobekeu he started for the train, which steed in Ferry street, separated from the street by a wooden fence. Three men followed him, apparently dogging his heels, but he paid ue attention te then at the time and only remembered te have noticed them after the assault en him had been committed. Mr. Smith reached the platform of the station in safui.y, carrrying his satchel in bis hand. He stepped upon the last car of the train, and the three men who had followed him from New Yerk stepped en after him. The car was already half filled, and Mr. Smith was obliged te go very near te the centre in order te find a seat. As he was about te sit down one of the men who had fel lowed him raised a piece of lead pipe which he held in his band and dealt the cashier a stunning blew en the back of the head. He followed this up with three mero blows, and as each one fell upon the head of the cashier one of the ether men tugged at the satchel, trying te tear it from his grasp. Mr. Smith, how ever, did net leso consciousness, and he held en te the satchel. Seeing that their efforts te wrest the meney fretu him were useless, the thieves left him and started te run out of the car. The assault had been se sudden and un expected that for an instant nobody in the car seemed te realize what had taken place and the passengers all sat as though spell bound. Before the thieves had reached the deer, however, a number of the male passengers started te intercept them. A Mr. Baur drew Kis revolver aud fired two shots at the retreating thieves. Neitl er of the shots took effect and the scoundrels escaped from the car. They rushed eat te the platform and jumped ever the fene. into Ferry street. Conductors liundie and Gardiuer held ou, the herse reared wildly, aud final ly one of the robbers drew a pistol aud fired at the conductors. At the same time two of the men jumped out of the wagon and started te run. Tne driver alone re maincd. and as the conductors let ue the bridle after the shot had been fired, the horse started en a dead run up Washing ton street. The two men who had jumped from the wagon took different direction., one of thorn running up Washington street after the hersa and tdj ether up Hudsen street. Chief Donevau, of the Hoboken pelic-3 force, was standing at the corner of Wash ingten aud Second streets, when he saw the wagon coming up the street, followed by a large crowd et men. He gave his name as William Ciatlc, said that he was 40 years old, a bl ickhinitb by trade, aud that he resided in Muluetry street, Newark. He refuted te give the number of his residence. It is believed that SaturJay was fixed upon as the time for the assault, because the robbers kuew that he had drawn a large amount of money from the clearing house. Reundsman Hays was iu charge of police headquarters, and he heard the shot fired by the robber from the wagon. Within a second a little boy rushed into the statie l house and said that a man had been killed down tin street. Reundsman Hays grab b-d his hat, and, leaving the office te take charge of itself, started out in search of the murderer. As he approached the ferry he saw a thick set man with a black must iche running, and he at once ar rested him. ' Don't put your hands en mc,'' said the man ; "I'm net going te try te getaway." "Yen had better net," said Reundsman Hays ; "I think I am big enough te get away with you." When t! e mm was brought te the front of the desk and confronted with Mr. Smith and Cen ducters Rundia and Gardiner, each indent ified him as te ene who had snatched the sachel after the blew had been given with the led pipe. He gave his name as Jehn Conrey, said that he was 3i years old, and that he was a elerk in Housten street, in New Yerk.
