LOSS TO SUIENuE. Uestrnctlen of Valuable Fish Collections at the Indiana University. The burning of the new and main build' ingef tbe state university at Blooming ten, Ind., is a very serious less en account of the destruction of the cabinet and library. The entire less is estimated at about $300,000, en which the insurance is only $27,000, but the greatest part of the less is partieally irreparable. The en tire Owen cabinet, containing 85,000 spec imens of fossils and minerals was in the possession of the university. Iu this col lection were the eiiginal types of many speeies new te science, described by Prof. David Dale Owen and ethers, as well as many noted specimens both from America and Europe. Among the most notable of these were the skeletons, nearly perfect, of a large ichthyosaurus from Wurtemburg, and of a mega mega lenyx from Hendersen, Kentucky, which is described and figured fortunately, by Prof. Cepe, iu the forthcoming report of the Indiana geological survey. The series ea etm of th aMfcl aeUla was unusually complete and valuable. The university series of Ward's easts was' also destroyed, but can be readily replaced. The heaviest less was in the zoological cabinet, and is about equally divided between the univer sity and Profs, Jerdan and Gilbert On the third fleer, and occupying two sides of a large hall, was Prof. Jerdan's collec tion of fishes, tbe largest private collection in tbe world, and also the extensive col lection of Prof. Gilbert. In these collec tions were typical examples of 300 species described as new te science, by Jerdan and Gibert, within the last eight years. There were also extensive collections in alcohol belonging te the United States national museum, te Yale college, Cernell university and ether institutions which had been sent te tbe university for deter mination and classification. Fortunately for science, the greater part of thsa speci mens had been described and classed in tie recent reports, of the national museum. They were of immeasurable value, however, in comparing aud class ifying the new species from time te time, and their less cannot be made geed except by patient re exploration aud seining of most of the fresh waters and sea coats el the entire continent of North Amer ica. Prof. Gilbert spent the greater part of laBt winter collecting fishes in the vicinity of the Isthmus of Panama, under the direc tion of Prof. Baird, the United States commissioner of fish and fisheries, aud secured about 40 species new te science. These he was engaged in classyfying during the present summer ; but with the de struction of type specimens, the less of his cabinet, and valuable private library, the work is brought abruptly te au end. The less will be a heavy ene te scionce. President Vess is new in the East ami Prof. Jerdan is in Europe. MAHKJS1H. Philadelphia market. PuiLADBLrniA, July 11. Eleur dull and weak. Rye flour at S3 M. Fancy work for the seashore has come te be an accustomed part of a lady's outfit. It takes but little room and forms a taste ful sort of occupation in keeping; with the inaction and quiet of one's surrounding's. Our art embroidery department is adapt ed te every lady's taste in this respect, from the very plainest te the most elaborate styles of -hand needlework. Instruction is given in any style of com menced work purchased. Our stock of stamped fancy linen goods is well asserted, em bracing many new designs, fruit pieces, floral groupings, Sec. One of the newest and richest kinds of work is most elaborate when an fait accompli, though reached by the very simplest means. It is the applique in the arrasene, plush and satin, te transfer en ether material that is ready fur nished for a groundwork. The figures thus transferred are mostly ileral groupings, in which ether material than the arrasene is used te produce these realistic effects in the complete ilewer. The arrasene is a kind of flat chenille, and it is made by one house in Londen. The applique is the significant term for the work, as applied or transferred te any handiwork. We believe no such elaborate specimens of the work have been before pro duced. They are beautiful and greatly admired: Samples can be sent by mail. Lewer deer, west et centre. JOHN WANAMAKER.
