MONDAY EVENING, JULY O, X883, i'A'JUI 1IUIUK OATLHISO. The FxRltlnc Marriage CerenmnleH Wltness- nllna Mexican ludtaa Camp. Senera Letter. In company with Mr. Bates, who came te this place with me from HermoBille. I visited the settlement of the Yaqui In dians, situated en the river of the hame name. Oar entrance was announced by the clamorous baying of the dogs, who, keeping close te enr horses' heels, follow fellow ed us through the town, which differs very little from an ordinary Mexicau village. The Indians are governed by an aleadc appointed by the Maxicau government, and who is usually their chief, for, al though peaceful and law-abiding, the 4aqui is proud and will net permit a tuler save of their own race. Before this individual we were immediately summon ed, and Mr. Bates, who is well kuewu te the chief, announced the object el our visit. The chief, who spoke Spanish fluently, assured us of our welcome, plac ing apartments iu his own heuse at our disposal. The excitement and bmtle which we imagined our arrival caused, the chief informed us, was owing te the mar riage en the following day of several daughters of the tribe. Net wishing te lese a sight se interesting as this premised te be we repaired early te the place where the ceremony was te be performed, which had for music a sort of drum, accompanied by fife and rend whistles, producing a weird, though net du-pleasing couseu.ince. Then fellow sports and games, which last until well into the afternoon, when the real ceremony of " bride catching " be 85nfi- . ... The would-eo undo is stationed ey uer father some hundred yards iu front of her suitor ; then, at a giveu signal, she starts for a goal distant about half a mile, te reach which and return, before overtaken by her pursuer, releases her from his at tentions. The rPbult, as you may imagine is net fiequent, as these dusky maidens are as eager te be "caught." as thei- mere favored sisters of civilized countries. I havn never witnessed auywheie a mere exciting race than this. The maideus straight andwqll formed, standing in their tunic dress reaching from the swelling besom te the knee, exposing yet conceal ing their charms, steed chatting with each ether until the signal was given, when, presto ! away like the wind they sped, followed by the young buck, who seen diminished the distance between them ami the marriage ceremony is completed, after which their games continue until a late hour when the village again assumes a quietness and silence euly biukeu by the baying of the dogs, which aie a real pest in all Mexican towns, as well as among the Indian tribes. Congressman Ltiackburu's (luiut. Ramsdel, in his Washington letter te the Press, tells the following : I saw Congressman .Toe Blackburn yes terday, aud asked him about the paragraph that is en its rounds about his summer wardrobe that his daughter is said te have sent him. lie laughed, aud said it had a grain of tiuth iu it. He taid he le't home for a day or two only, and took only a small bag with him. The consolidation of internal revenue districts brought him unexpectedly te Washington. He at once telegraphed home te have a trunk of clothes sent te him here. His little daughter, in the absence of her mother, opened the dispatch, and i bought it was her duty te obey it. Se she packed a mink and put a note in it, as fellows : Versailles, Ky. Dear Papa : I send you all the clothes I can find, and 1 hope you arc well. Mr. Blackburn said that the ttuuk con tained the following : 7 white shirts. G winter scarfs. 1 teeth brush. 1 Bewie knife. 2 revolvers. This is what a Kentucky girl regards as a suitable summer waidrobe for a gentle man. Mr. Blackburn, who is a charming gentleman, notwithstanding his bluster in the Heuse, laughs as heaitily ever the incident as auy of his friends. Mr. Geerge Dedge SpeakH.
