A singular case of lethargic existence is new the talk cf Newtown, Conn. The sleeper is Sherman W. Piatt who has always resided with his father, Mr. Wenzer Piatt, a well to.de farmer whose place is located four miles distant from Newtown Centre. Yeung Mr. Piatt is a -well built man about thirty flve years of age. lie had always assisted his father in the working of a large farm. During the spring of 1882 he was attacked with malaria, and while he was treated for it and anDeared te have recovered was never siuee wholly free from its effects. With the arrival of summer he worked en the farm, displaying few comatose symp tome, and during the haying period was as active as any. One day, however, be was affected mere than usual by the heat, and, while net overcome by it, lay dewu en the hay under a tree te icst, hoping te feel better after a short nap. It proved te he a long one, however, for although his days of consecutive sleep did net theu beirin the inllueuce which tended te make nrntmntfiil feleeu pessible instituted its work. While under the tree the belief u entertained bv his mother that he nnflered sunstroke, for en being re moved te the house he acted and talked straupelv. and never since seemed te ee himself. Whether it was malaria, sun btreke or the two combined that produced bis present condition or net, certain it is that after last Thaukscivinc day (Novem ber 30) he kept himself aloof, remained most of the time within doers siud a fe w days before Christmas sank into a deep sleep in his bed, continuing there till the latter part of Jauuary, scarcely cuauginc his position or recognizing persons in at tendance and net ouce arousing from his stupor. Toward spring there was a slight cbange in the' sleeper, which was uiani felted by au inclination te move, but he did net open his eyes, anil during tin co mouths since his salf-unCviusciousuess set in he has eateti scarcely eueugh te sustain life. Singular Symptoms. What inllueuce kept life in him is mere than anyone can tell. He was bolsteied up in bed, still with closed eyes and mouth healed against speech. Ha ex pressed by sound or motion no evidence of sufl'eriiig, aud his silenca seemed te iudi rate that his wish was simply te be left alone. Later he was assisted te a sitting position, but the affectionate words of his relatives were uttered in his cars iu vain. At last he was taken from the bed and his clothes put en. This was brought about with difficulty, as he was like one with no life no muscular power. In April he began te walk tremblingly, at first holding en by ai tides of furniture and afterwards he could stand and walk walk alone. Ne kind appeal succeeded in di awing fieni him even the reply of a syllable. As the days came and went he walked fiem his bed te the chair and back again te bed. Daily, like an infant, he was dicssed and uudtesscd. Evidences of leturuingsticngth have been marked since the anival of warm weather, but reason only iu pail. A while age he scented the way tu the household pantry, and he has since at neatly iegul.iv intei vals oscillated bat wee u the chair aud cupboard shelves When moving his eyes have opened luttiilly, aud he has tit tered involuntary words only, but none which ceul J be understood or accepted as intelligent. On rising iu the morning after sleepiug hnuudly at night he is rcg ularly diessed, like a baby, and led te his chair, whoie he immediately sinks te sleep When hunger piempts he ii..es, proceeds te the pantiy, eats, lclurus te the chair, sleeps and wheti night comes is undressed aud gees te sleep again, hi winter aud tally ipiiug or befeic the uatuie el his strange case wa3 known inauy hiteis weie admitted te .see the pel son who could Meep se long and live, but of late no one is allowed te see the patient save tiie im mediate menibeis ul the faintly. The period of his lethauy at thK wiiliu co verfc 101 days. 1.4UII1H. KhVlsEIt.
