Presbyterian. An adverse judgment ia beginning te appear in reference te the use of incident or story in the sermon, and as action and reaction are equal we may expect aa much hostility te it in the incoming fashion of preaching as favor has been shown te it in that vaine out. The stvle of preaching at any time ib shaped by a few heads of Uie profession. They become, both because of intellect and position, the models for the imitation of the young. This is invetable. The illustrative" method of preaching has prevailed largely in the last quarter of a century. The great preachers have net argued as much and as closely as these in the last age. The modern preacher's work has rather been te threw light en dim truths, or te magnify the truth in them. Hence mere attention has been given te deepening impressions and rendering i m mediately effective their teachings. The men of this a;Q have conceived Ibeir mission te be that? of harvesting, and while this is esteemed as the end te ba attained in discourse the use of illustration and in cident will prevail in despite of adverse criticism. It w.i-i Christ's method, and cannot ba sneered out of existence by sup ercilious fault finding. The men who have ever been me3t of. fective in convincing men of sin and turn ing thorn te Ged have used illustrations incidents and 6teries if you please te make truth effective and te deepen im pressions, te command attention and arouse feelings te action. When these are thrown aside, and the stately style is adopted, or even the severely chaste, without pendants or ornamentation, the didactic will come te be the style, and the results of the change must be looked for a half century hence. There will be no sewing aud reaping by the same hand en the same day. The men of intellect will held the fort, while the men of genius will writhe in chafing harness at the rear. Peels will have te make brick without straw. Painters will be compelled te the service of whitewashing prepared models. There will be seme advantages in the change. The Deric style will require less labor. Ornamentation for effect is expen sive, and ten can work en Deric models te one en the elaborate) Corinthian; and te a certain class of minds, hearts and tastes tl.osevero style will ba mere effective. Te the young, thoughtless and ignorant the beauty of icebergs in moeulght would be as convincing. The want of variety will be felt, as a means of drawing attention and impression. Besides, this stvle has had but a limited held en the minds and emotions of men. A diamond is kuewn by its crystalline structure, its proportions aud its brilliancy; but the final test of the genuineness of a diamond is its coldness. It is tee trans parent legct warm. The style of dress in the transmission of human thought which will ever be most potent in thu pulpit must produce heat, quicker pulsations and warmer bleed. The great classic orators did net spurn the fab'e and story when it seivcd their purpose. Demosthenes aud Cicere drew often i,Av quickest and most telling cfluctf. thieu h their use. The react ie:: we i.vn indicated above is cosily explained, aud has becu expected b these who are fowl of forecasting the future.
